Easy biking distance to Stanford, SLAC, downtown Menlo Park, Sand Hill Rd & 280. We are less than 20 minutes walk from the northwest corner of the Stanford campus and about 35 minutes' walk from the center of campus. We are also walking or easy biking distance to downtown Menlo Park, Palo Alto, and the Stanford Shopping Center.

You have your own thermostat, which allows you to adjust the temperature to your comfort. We ask that you set the thermostat to low when you are away.

Many of our guests are international scholars coming to teach, research or study at Stanford. Many of them prefer not to rent a car and have been happy to be walking or biking distance from campus. If you'd like to bike, we have a spare bike we can let you use at a nominal cost: $5 a day, $25 a week or $75 a month plus $75 refundable deposit. It's a medium-sized Huffy, with handbrakes.

HOUSE RULES - NO SMOKING, no exceptions. No shoes (to keep the cottage extra-clean). Recycling actively encouraged.

Interaction with guests

We’re empty nesters, have lived in the area most of our lives. We can leave you totally on your own, from check-in to check-out if that is your preference, but are available and happy to answer any questions you may have about the area or provide recommendations.

This is an ideal set-up for guests spending time at Stanford, and for out-of-towners wanting to spend time with friends or family in the area.

The neighborhood

West Menlo Park is full of bike paths and nice, easy walks. And we’re less than a 5-minute drive from the Stanford Dish walk (approx 3 miles), a paved path through the foothills with spectacular views. And there’s lots of great hiking not much further. We love hiking; let us know if you want some area recommendations.

We are walking distance to the Avy Avenue/Alameda de las Pulgas shopping area, which includes a Starbucks, U.S. Post Office, gas station, the highly acclaimed Flea Street Café restaurant, and the favorite Stanford beer-and-burger hangout, the Dutch Goose. We are also walking distance Sharon Heights Shopping Center, which includes another Starbucks, Shell station, a 24-hour Safeway, a CVS pharmacy, frozen yogurt shop, European deli, shoe repair, travel agency, various other services, a Mexican restaurant, and the highly rated Mitsunobu Japanese restaurant.

Getting around

PARKING-- Off-street parking is available. In case you have a larger vehicle, or prefer not to negotiate the driveway turnaround, overnight parking is allowed on our side of the street (west side) without limit.

Laurel and Steve were fantastic hosts. The property is clean, welcoming, and very comfortable. Throughout our stay, Laurel and Steve were responsive and accommodating, and always made us feel right at home. This was a longer stay than we have done with Airbnb in the past, and we cannot imagine having a better or more considerate pair of hosts than Laurel and Steve. If you need a great studio in the Menlo Park or Palo Alto area, we highly recommend this one.

This tree-top studio was exactly as advertised and more. The space is very bright and fresh. The keyless entry made access easy. Laurel was very responsive to texts both before my parents arrived and afterwards. Her studio was the perfect place to recover from the chaos of the grandchildren. I would not hesitate to book the studio again.

Had a great time staying in Laurel's tree-top studio. It is exactly as it appears in the photos and then some -- very comfortable, well equipped, and easy to get in and out with the keyless entry. If I needed anything, Laurel and Steve were very responsive! The neighborhood is very quiet (a plus for me) but not far at all from good eateries and the lively downtown areas of Menlo Park and Palo Alto. I stayed while taking a workshop at Stanford and wouldn't hesitate to book again!

Stayed there for a biz trip and love the place it was so cozy quiet and private. Laurel was an amazing hostess and love the keyless entry system ~ no need to fumble for keys. They also lent me their bike and it was wonderful to be able to sneak in a bike ride during my trip across the Stanford campus. Easy to call Lyft from there as well making my commute to clients office painless.

Vincent, it was really a pleasure to host you, and wish you could stay longer! Thank you for appreciating our 'tree-house' studio! :)

My husband Steve and I are long-time local residents; I was born in Palo Alto, so a real native and Steve is from England. We were high-school sweethearts (his dad was at SLAC for a year), then we reconnected 20+ years later & got married! Now we're empty nesters with 4 kids in our blended family, all living in California. We have a successful home-based marketing agency, so we’re around most of the time for your convenience and security.

We love hosting and also traveling-- to my husband's native UK (lots of family & friends still there). Have been to China, Cuba, Mexico and much of western Europe. Hoping to travel more in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

We love taking road trips in the Western US (our Tesla is our biggest splurge!), and exploring big cities, especially NYC & LA. Our favorite trip of all was a family stay in New Orleans-- fabulous music, food, history & people!

Since Airbnb is asking, the "5 things we can't live without" are (not necessarily in this order): movies & music, exercise, NPR & BBC, our kids & our cats.

We are Michael Pollan converts and think his 7-word food philosophy sums it up beautifully: "eat food (as opposed to food-like products), not too much, mostly plants." We buy local, sustainable, organic as much as we can.
