Modern, sunlit, airy studio apartment; top story above our detached garage. Guests comment on how light it is, with windows all around--but of course you can draw the blinds for more privacy or filtered light.

Nice, private setting, on a flag lot down long driveway, away from the street. Approx 450 sq ft, including seating and dining areas, kitchen, walk-in closet, bathroom and sleeping area.

Fully equipped, with Jennair electric stove & oven, full-size fridge, dishwasher, microwave, garbage disposal, instant hot. Breakfast bar with barstools.

QUEEN-SIZED BED--Comfortable. queen-sized bed with nightstand and bedside reading lamp. A child could sleep on a folding foam mattress on the floor--that would be the 3rd person (there is not a sofa bed).

FULL BATH with enclosed combo tub/shower.

LAUNDRY--dedicated washer & dryer in garage.

High-quality all-cotton bed linens include a down comforter, 4 pillows, and there is an ample supply of towels. Please bring your own alarm clock and toiletries. You have your own thermostat, which allows you to adjust the temperature to your comfort. We ask that you set the thermostat to low when you are away.

West Menlo Park/Sharon Heights section of Santa Cruz Avenue. Easy biking distance to Stanford, SLAC, downtown Menlo Park, Sand Hill Rd & 280. We are less than 20 minutes walk from the northwest corner of the Stanford campus and about 35 minutes' walk from the center of campus. We are also walking or easy biking distance to downtown Menlo Park, Palo Alto, and the Stanford Shopping Center.

West Menlo Park is full of bike paths and nice, easy walks. And we’re less than a 5-minute drive from the Stanford Dish walk (approx 3 miles), a paved path through the foothills with spectacular views. And there’s lots of great hiking not much further. We love hiking; let us know if you want some area recommendations.

We’re empty nesters, have lived in the area most of our lives, and are happy to answer any questions you may have about the area or provide recommendations. This is an ideal set-up for an out-of-towner wanting to spend time with friends or family in the area.

We are walking distance to the Avy Avenue/Alameda de las Pulgas shopping area, which includes a Starbucks, U.S. Post Office, gas station, the highly acclaimed Flea Street Café restaurant, and the favorite Stanford beer-and-burger hangout, the Dutch Goose. We are also walking distance Sharon Heights Shopping Center, which includes another Starbucks, Shell station, a 24-hour Safeway, a CVS pharmacy, yogurt shop, European deli, shoe repair, travel agency, various other services, a Mexican restaurant, and the highly rated Mitsunobu Japanese restaurant.

Off-street parking is available. In case you have a larger vehicle, or prefer not to negotiate the driveway turnaround, overnight parking is allowed on our side of the street (west side) without limit. Overnight parking in the City of Menlo Park (east side of the street) is restricted, but courtesy warnings are issued before any citations.

Many of our guests are international scholars coming to teach, research or study at Stanford. Many of them prefer not to rent a car and have been happy to be walking or biking distance from campus. If you'd like to bike, we have a spare bike we can let you use at a nominal cost: $5 a day, $25 a week or $75 a month plus $75 refundable deposit. It's a medium-sized Huffy, with handbrakes.

HOUSE RULES - NO SMOKING, no exceptions. No shoes (to keep the cottage extra-clean). Recycling actively encouraged.

  • This was such a comfortable place to stay: spacious, well-equipped, quiet, and very convenient to downtown and the university. Thanks, Laurel!

  • I really enjoyed my stay at the studio. It was in the perfect location and just the right size. I stayed for 7 weeks to work with colleagues in the area, and I felt like I had a home to come to in the evenings. The kitchen is well-stocked (the knives are sharp!!) and I did a lot of cooking after visiting the local farmer's markets.

Laurel was a great host as well, and if I needed anything, she was there to help. I would certainly rent this place again (and maybe I will have the opportunity to!) and recommend it to friends.

  • This "tree-house" is a delight. Just off a somewhat busy street, the trees block the noise so traffic sounds are not a problem. Windows on three sides of the living area allow for a lovely breeze. The studio has a full bath, a large closet, and a generous living area with a complete kitchen. The bed is extremely comfortable. Laurel and her son could not have been more welcoming and assistive. I wish my harried schedule had allowed me time to chat with Laurel as I think we could be friends.

  • Can't wait to return! I spent the entire month of November 2013 as a guest in this beautiful, sun-filled studio apartment. By the time I left, it felt very much like a second home. The flowers blooming outside my window, the hummingbirds in the garden, the lemon tree in the fountain courtyard and many other unique features, all helped to create a wonderful, restful experience. Laurel, Stephen & David were all very welcoming and helpful. Rarely did I have to ask for anything however because the apartment was so well appointed with just about everything I could have possibly needed during my stay. I acquired a bike my second day and enjoyed many rides on and off Stanford’s campus. The pedestrian bridge that connects Menlo Park and campus was a wonderful find and just minutes from the apartment. I often biked to the local Safeway and into the charming shopping district of Menlo Park. I did appreciate the parking space right by the steps to my apartment but I rarely used my car because the bike riding was such a joy. While I did have other family members join me during my month's visit, much of the time I was on my own. I felt very safe and secure in the neighborhood and on this property. It is extremely well maintained, well lit and private. While there is not a television or cable service in the apartment, high speed internet is included and was excellent for streaming any videos or programming that I needed to catch up on during my stay. Actually, I enjoyed the quiet and caught up on a good deal of reading in the comfortable chairs set by the windows. Truly, Laurel’s listings are rare finds and you should jump at the chance to stay here (if you can find an opening!) Thank you again Laurel... Hope to be back with you this spring! Judy Reihner

  • Had a wonderful stay in this sunny, private studio. It was exactly as advertised. Comfortable bed, quiet location, clean and cozy. Enjoyed a lovely walk to and from campus each day of my stay. Very easy check-in and check-out, hosts were very responsive and helpful. Highly recommend.

  • This clean well-lit and nicely furnished studio was perfect for our visit with family nearby, affording us easy proximity to downtown Menlo Park and Palo Alto. We liked all the windows, with trees all around that provided a natural screen...truly a tree house!

  • We are so pleased to have found Laurel and Steve's lovely studio. This was a big step up from a hotel room. We were visiting our daughter's family and new grandson and this location close to Stanford and shopping was so convenient.
The studio was clean, well appointed and the hosts are delightful.
We would love to be able to stay here again on future visits.

  • Laurel's studio was perfect. It has a beautiful backyard and the studio was well-equipped with everthing that I need. Laurel and her husband, Steve were so kind and nice people. They gave me an answer so fast whenever I ask them a favor, so I could stay there without any inconvenience. I've stayed there so happily, so I highly recommend Laurel's studio.

  • I had stayed for about 40 days at Laurel's studio. It was very nice experience for me and my two daughters. Steve and Laurel are very responsive and kind.

The studio is located in the nice community and near Stanford uni. so I could use the free shuttle provided by Stanford.

Nice and cozy place. If I go to California, I will definetly stay here again.

    Thank you! Steve & Laurel!
