Mambiche (mom bee chay) House (instagram mambichehouse #mambichehouse) is a newly renovated Caribbean cottage with ocean views located in the Mambiche Hills neighborhood of Isabel Segunda on the island of Vieques. The house overlooks Fort Conde de Mirasol (built in the mid-1800’s), Isabel Segunda and the ocean. In the distance you can see the main island of Puerto Rico and the island of Culebra. Mambiche Hills is a friendly, quiet neighborhood with a mix of local and seasonal residents and is a 2 minute drive (or 10 minute walk) to the restaurants, shops and bars in Isabel Segunda.
There are two bedrooms; a master bedroom with a queen bed and direct access to the 150 square foot back patio, and a second bedroom with two twin beds (which can be kept separate or combined to form a king bed). The master bedroom has AC and the second bedroom (as well as the living room) has a ceiling fan. There are also two stand-up fans which can be used in any room. The living room and kitchen are open plan and there is a front patio where you can enjoy your morning coffee. The kitchen has a coffee maker, blender, fridge/freezer, pots, pans, utensils and most everything you need for cooking. The bathroom has also been completely renovated. The back patio, which can also be accessed from the hallway, has two Adirondack chairs for lounging, as well as regular chairs, a bench and an outdoor table so that you can enjoy meals outside. Not to be overlooked is our outdoor shower where you can rinse off after a day at the beach! We have mature mango, papaya and avocado trees on our property, so if you are there in the right season, you can help yourself! The house is stocked with everything you need for the beach including beach towels, beach chairs, an umbrella and a cooler. There is private off street parking in front of the house as well.
Mambiche Hills is not only convenient to the amenities in Isabel Segunda but is within 15 minutes to some of the best beaches in the Caribbean. Please note that renting a car is highly advisable (and really necessary) in order to get to these beaches and to explore the island. While you can get a publico (local taxi) to Sun Bay and Red Beach, publicos will not take you to some of the more remote beaches. We keep a car on the island so feel free to inquire if you are interesting in renting it, however there are also several car rental agencies on the island. Book cars well in advance as they tend to run out in high season.
Vieques is filled with great restaurants, from Sorce, the new restaurant at the W Resort and Spa, to El Reseulve, a local empanada shack. There are also various street food vendors on the roadside as you drive to the beach and fun local dive bars. Both Isabel Segunda and Esperanza, on the south side of the island, have fun bars and excellent restaurants. (Upon booking, we will send you a list of our top picks for bars and restaurants on Vieques…there is no shortage!). There is a grocery store in Isabel Segunda (although it may not compare favorably to your local Whole Foods) and several convenience stores nearby where you can stock up on drinks and other basics.
To the extent you want to do more than sit on the incredible beaches, there are numerous activities including biking, hiking, snorkeling, fishing, kayaking, sailing and birdwatching. Don’t miss the nightly Bioluminescence Bay tour!

We loved our stay on Vieques at Mambiche House. The house is exactly as listed and was perfect for our family of three. We already voted to spend next spring break at Mambiche! The island is small and everything seemed within a 20 minute drive. Everyone was very nice, food and groceries were easy to find and prices comparable to our home in the US. Plus, the beaches were priceless! We were sad to leave and rank this vacation one of our best yet. Thank you Matthew and Catherine!
Amazing!!!! Actually, amazing doesn't do it justice.....Every step of the process was incredibly smooth and easy with the homeowner, great communication and very helpful. The house is not only cute, it's very comfortable, welcoming, and safe. We were over the moon about how comfy the bed was, after a long day at the beach it was so nice to have a nice bed at night! We rented the car from Matthew (highly recommended, you NEED a car to get to the beaches) it's a great beach vehicle and got us everywhere we needed to go!
The location is great, Aida and Nano (the house managers) live a block away, so if there was ever a problem they could just walk down and help! (they also drove us to and from the airport!). When we were initially booking our trip we were on the fence about a house vs a hotel, WE ARE SO HAPPY WE WENT WITH A HOUSE! Especially after speaking with other vacationers who were at the hotels.
The WIFI in the house is fast and reliable, hot water is great, and the kitchen is awesome! We went to the fish market and farmers market the first day we arrived and had plenty of groceries to make breakfast, beach snacks and dinner!
This was our first trip to Vieques, and after our first day, we pretty much decided we would be back! (and probably at this house, it was so amazing!!!!!!!)
Had an amazing time in the Mambiche House on Vieques!! My wife and I stayed 5 nights and loved every minute. The house was exactly as presented in the pictures and provides a very authentic island experience! The house had everything we needed and renting the car from Matt was a no-brainer. We just loaded up every morning and went to one of the many amazing, secluded beaches within 10-15 minutes of the house. The view from the patio is fantastic, overlooking the old fort and ocean, and makes for a great breakfast spot. My wife and I would definitely come back and do it all over again. For anyone considering a trip to Vieques I would highly recommend staying here.
Nice house, exactly as shown in the posted pictures. Located in a real neighborhood, urban for the island, with interesting neighbors to chat with, dogs, cats, chickens, etc. Easy walk to town. House caretakers were great - Nano was a big help and was readily available. House had all necessary supplies for a terrific vacation, and the supplied pina colada ingredients were really a wonderful touch.
We had a great week at Mambiche House in February. Our CapeAir flight to Vieques was cancelled when we arrived in San Juan, so they put us up at the Airport Hotel, gave us a meal voucher and flew us to the island on the first flight the next day. A quick call to Nano, the house manager, who was already aware of the flight cancellation, and - no problem, he'd pick us up at the airport in the morning.
The house was spotlessly clean with comfortable beds and more than enough towels. We also appreciated the aesthetic decor. Matt was super responsive to any question that came up. Best place to watch the Super Bowl - Al's Mar Azul. Can't find the beach chairs and umbrella - look under the guest room beds.
All in all, a charming vacation destination. Plan on getting a car to get to the many fantastic beaches all over the island.
What a great opportunity to avoid the typical tourist route and really feel immersed in local Vieques life. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and appreciated Matthew's extensive recommendations and excellent communication throughout the process!
The house itself is pretty much as advertised—a cute and comfy cottage that's bright, cheery and clean. We loved the air conditioner in the bedroom, not only did it keep things nice and cool for sleeping, it also drowned out any neighborhood noise at night. The bed was super comfortable!
We appreciated the extra amenities: wifi service (hard to come by on the island!!), plenty of towels, and complimentary pina colada fixings!
The Mambiche Hills neighborhood is your typical Caribbean barrio, and it's within easy walking distance of the main town of Isabel Segundo. We loved exploring the city on foot, though we did really appreciate the Jeep we rented for half the trip to visit the different beaches. Within walking distance, our favorite things were sunsets at Al's Mar Azul, chatting with the locals at the Plaza Bar, dinner at Conuco, and finding treasures at Sea Glass Beach.
You can't beat the price for a private vacation cottage! Highly recommended.
Fine place, good location, friendly relations between neighbors, safe street. Vieques as wonderful as ever.

Food, wine and relaxing by our outdoor fireplace are the few simple things we enjoy and you can enjoy these things at our house in the hilltop village of Morruzze! We also like the beach, watersports and watching the sun set with our rum and tonics in Vieques!
