Mambiche (mom bee chay) House is a newly renovated Caribbean cottage with ocean views located in the Mambiche Hills neighborhood of Isabel Segunda on the island of Vieques. The house overlooks Fort Conde de Mirasol (built in the mid-1800’s), Isabel Segunda and the ocean. In the distance you can see the main island of Puerto Rico and the island of Culebra. Mambiche Hills is a friendly, quiet neighborhood with a mix of local and seasonal residents and is a 2 minute drive (or 10 minute walk) to the restaurants, shops and bars in Isabel Segunda.
There are two bedrooms; a master bedroom with a queen bed and direct access to the 150 square foot back patio, and a second bedroom with two twin beds (which can be kept separate or combined to form a king bed). The master bedroom has AC and the second bedroom (as well as the living room) has a ceiling fan. There are also two stand-up fans which can be used in any room. The living room and kitchen are open plan and there is a front patio where you can enjoy your morning coffee. The kitchen has a coffee maker, blender, fridge/freezer, pots, pans, utensils and most everything you need for cooking. The bathroom has also been completely renovated. The back patio, which can also be accessed from the hallway, has two Adirondack chairs for lounging, as well as regular chairs, a bench and an outdoor table so that you can enjoy meals outside. Not to be overlooked is our outdoor shower where you can rinse off after a day at the beach! We have mature mango, papaya and avocado trees on our property, so if you are there in the right season, you can help yourself! The house is stocked with everything you need for the beach including beach towels, beach chairs, an umbrella and a cooler. There is private off street parking in front of the house as well.
Mambiche Hills is not only convenient to the amenities in Isabel Segunda but is within 15 minutes to some of the best beaches in the Caribbean. Please note that renting a car is highly advisable (and really necessary) in order to get to these beaches and to explore the island. While you can get a publico (local taxi) to Sun Bay and Red Beach, publicos will not take you to some of the more remote beaches. We keep a car on the island so feel free to inquire if you are interesting in renting it, however there are also several car rental agencies on the island. Book cars well in advance as they tend to run out in high season.
Vieques is filled with great restaurants, from Sorce, the new restaurant at the W Resort and Spa, to El Reseulve, a local empanada shack. There are also various street food vendors on the roadside as you drive to the beach and fun local dive bars. Both Isabel Segunda and Esperanza, on the south side of the island, have fun bars and excellent restaurants. (Upon booking, we will send you a list of our top picks for bars and restaurants on Vieques…there is no shortage!). There is a grocery store in Isabel Segunda (although it may not compare favorably to your local Whole Foods) and several convenience stores nearby where you can stock up on drinks and other basics.
To the extent you want to do more than sit on the incredible beaches, there are numerous activities including biking, hiking, snorkeling, fishing, kayaking, sailing and birdwatching. Don’t miss the nightly Bioluminescence Bay tour!

The Mambiche House was a perfect HQ for our Vieques adventures. Matthew was kind, responsive, and incredibly helpful throughout the entire rental process, had great insider tips, and our vacation itself was perfect. Great kitchen, plenty of fridge space, and a nice breeze blowing through the airy house. We ate breakfast on the deck every morning, explored the amazing beaches by day, and came home to relax in comfort every night. The neighborhood is full of friendly locals, and you really are just a quick walk away from some great action downtown. We would highly recommend.
Casa Mambiche is a rare find. It's small, but completely cozy. It's well-equipped, comfortable, safe, happy, sunny, and charming. We absolutely loved it. The deck has a fantastic view of the Atlantic side of the island, and of the fort as well. My toddler and I loved eating cereal on the deck every morning and watching the island wake up. The master bedroom is so lovely. Napping there in the afternoon was one of my favorite vacation "activities". The second bedroom was perfect for our daughter: small, dark, and cool. The kitchen had absolutely everything we needed to be able to cook our own meals whenever we chose to. The front patio has a lovely little foot shower, and a full-sized outdoor shower as well, which we really appreciated after long, sandy, sweaty days at the beach. The neighborhood is a great mix of retired Americans and locals. Be forewarned: the roosters start early and the salsa goes late. It didn't bother us at all, but we love being in the mix of things. It was fun to hear neighbors calling to each other from up and down the street. The house was not fancy by any means, but it was spotlessly clean, had everything we needed (towels, beach umbrella, sand toys, etc.), is stylishly decorated, and gave us a happy little home for our week on Vieques. Thanks Matt and Catherine!
Our family of 4 had a great stay at Mambiche House. The house is simple, comfortable (great beds!!) and has a gorgeous view. We were able to get around the island easily and have a great home base. The tips and information left were so useful, so we could really dive right in to our trip. Vieques was better than we could have imagined. The neighbors were very friendly and helpful. I was sick in bed for 3 days and still couldn't complain too much with a great view, a comfortable bed, and decent wifi. We will be back!
We had a great time in Vieques and a nice stay at Mambiche House. The view is lovely and the porch is the perfect place to enjoy it. I wish I had realized how close the neighbors would be. The house is very much in a neighborhood and is not the place for travelers looking for seclusion. There is wireless internet, but the connection is not fantastic. Had I known, I would have left the electronics I brought at home. There is no safe either, which is something to keep in mind. All in all, the house is a perfect place to stay if you want to get out, explore the island, and take advantage of the kitchen to steam up some Caribbean lobsters for dinner one night!
Mambiche House became our Vieques home for a week. The bed was comfy and AC great on those warmer nights, and extra bedroom nice to have for naps. The deck was perfect for our evening Rum & Tonics, drying our laundry (we opted not to use the lovely dryer), and the occasional visiting chicken. The kitchen offered the essentials plus spices etc. We rented Matthews car, complete with all it's character, it got us everywhere on the island.
We walked into Isabell Segunda regularly, too. The street the house is on is a well developed street and has both gringo and locals, plus a number of chickens (roosters are crazy) cats dogs yay. You're in the heart of local living. We'd stay there again for it's great value and welcoming space. Thanks for opening up your home!
This is a very nice house. The kitchen is stocked with anything you may need, including if you want to get a fresh lobster at the docks and cook it. There are 2 beach chairs and an umbrella, a convenient cooler -- all very thoughtful.
The location is also quiet nice if you prefer to be away from all the noise of the town but still be able to walk to it. The house is on top of a hill, so it's a nice exercise with a rewarding view to walk up it.
The hosts are incredibly responsive. We've had some initial issues, but they could not have responded faster. Things happen so I was very appreciative for their immediate attention to things.
Matt was extremely prompt in his responses, and provided great insight to our trip. The house was spotless when we arrived, everything was in perfect working condition, and it truly is an exceptional place. I would highly suggest anyone considering a trip to Vieques seriously consider this as an option for their stay. Many thanks to Matt, Ida, and Nano.
We had the most wonderful stay in Vieques at this house! The location was removed enough from the center of Isabel II to be quiet, but close enough to the main road to be a convenient drive anywhere on the island. The cottage was very comfortable - stocked with every thoughtful convenience. From start to finish, Matthew and Catherine were always easy to contact and very helpful. They have caretakers for the house that live just up the street, and they too were very accommodating and welcoming. We stayed for nearly a month, and tried to extend our vacation as it was coming to an end! Can't wait to return to Casa Mambiche!
A beautiful cozy cottage in the heart of Mambiche. The rooms were very clean and the location was close to town. The communication between owner was seamless. We booked 24 hours before our arrival and had immediate prompt response. We enjoyed having coffee on the patio every morning at the cottage. Kitchen was perfect for making breakfast in the morning. A very quiet setting throughout the day/night (minus the roosters). Matt was very helpful with pickup/dropoff from the ferry and we opted to rent his vehicle. You definitely need 4WD on this island so we'd recommend renting from Matt. Island maps, recommendations, and a great book on the history of the island was waiting for us when we arrived. We felt very well taken care of. Would rent this property again!
A wonderful house in Isabel Segunda. Well-equipped, with wifi and great kitchen and bathroom. Very convenient to be near the town for supplies. We'd definitely be up for staying there again if we are able to make it back to Vieques!
