First, the price was right and better appliances, including a washer, than a hotel. The agent for the owner, Lexie, told me exactly how to get to the metro stop from the airport and then she met me and escorted me to the apartment. She explained the terms, including the limited supply of electricity, free maid service, and introduced me to the owner. Both were cordial and respectful. I was not warned about the 200 yuan deposit but I had the cash so it was OK.
The only problem was the cockroaches which I am an expert at getting rid of them.
The location in the city of Guangzhou was excellent. Strolling around the area was interesting and taught me local culture: dangerous car drivers, and motorcycle thugs, crowded festivities on Friday night, about 1000 high rise apartment buildings, about 100 banks with ATM, friendly people with their children. There are many skyscraper office buildings in the modern style of architecture which appeared to be marks of the most proud regions. There is a wide range of restaurants or places selling food. Taxis, busses, trains and subways in abundance allows one to avoid driving in the reckless turmoil of traffic.
This apartment, large enough for 2 people, is superior to a hotel at three times the price.
Lexie and her assistant Mrs. Zhou, work hard to make our stay pleasant and provide us with need information to have productive stay. The apartment was small for our standards and could be cleaner.
On issues did occur worth noting: On arrival we where informed that 200. RMB was required as a deposit. The money was not the problem, but the requirement for only RMB was. I offer my Visa card and US$, each was rejected. The. next 4 hours was spent looking for a bank that would except US based Visa card, cost not only the 4 hours but $10 in cab fare.
I would recommend bring more RMB, and that Lexie give future tenant advance notice of the need for 200RMB deposit, or accept other currency or credit card en lieu of RMB.
