Come experience typical Andean village life in this small picturesque town, located mid-way between the city of Cusco and the Sacred Valley. Huarocondo is an ideal place to relax and enjoy nature, with quiet evenings and many trails and roads to hike
GringoWasi is a unique bed and breakfast offering a quiet small town experience just 30 min. from Cusco, perfect for relaxing and refueling. Come and enjoy our refurbished and spacious century old traditional adobe home in Huarocondo, conveniently located between Cusco and Ollantaytambo. This small town is nestled in a beautiful valley with a population of approximately 5,000 people, Huarocondo provides a welcomed change of pace for travelers looking to escape the tourist vibe of Cusco and enjoy a peaceful night’s rest.
The property is owned and operated by Lyle & Lily an American/Peruvian couple that relocated to the Cusco region to operate a bed and breakfast. Lyle is originally from southern California and most recently lived in Las Vegas; Lily is originally from Lima, Peru and lived in the US for 12 years. The two met in Las Vegas in 2005, fell in love and were married not long after. Shortly after their first trip together to Lily’s home country of Peru, the two started to make plans to move there permanently. In early 2012 the couple took a trip to Cusco and purchased the property with the intention of converting it into a bed and breakfast now known as “GringoWasi”. The name was chosen as a way to pay respect to the local culture; most of the population of Huarocondo still speaks their native language Quechua, Wasi being a Quechua word for house means the name can be translated to “Gringo’s House”.
GringoWasi offers a large great room for relaxing, an inviting patio, separate dining room, kitchen, 24 hr. hot water, DVD library for guest use and a smoke free environment. Guests can also enjoy complimentary Wi-fi throughout the property, use of a computer, bag storage and calls to or from the US and Canada via our MagicJack.
This spacious room features one double and one single bed, a table with two small chairs, one larger chair for relaxing, night stands, small armoire, towels, linens, down comforters, locally handcrafted décor, lockable storage, and shares a bath room with two other rooms. A full breakfast is included with your room and may include (subject to availability) fresh baked breads, fruit, ham, cheeses, jam, eggs, fruit juice, coffee, and teas. Clock Radio i-Pod docks and hair dryers are also available upon request.
At GringoWasi we also offer additional services for a reasonable fee, including laundry services, transportation, afternoon and evening meals, as well as tour services for our guests and would be happy to assist with all your travel plans, from your arrival in Lima to your departure. We work with several properties in Lima and other towns, as well as local tour operators and would be happy to assist you in booking your room in Lima, flight from Lima to Cusco and any desired tours or other lodgings needed. Additionally we offer private and personalized back road adventure tours to some of the local sites on a limited basis. Please contact us in advance if you are interested in a private tour as they tend to book quick. Tour options include Machu Picchu, Sacred Valley, Inca Trail, Moray, paragliding, zip lines and bungee jumping to name a few.
If you are looking for a little local excitement we suggest visiting in November when there are two separate festivals, one celebrating the founding of the city and the other a celebration of roast pig or “Lechon”. The largest local festival is the festival of the Virgin del Carmen, this festival runs for 5 days and starts on July 15th. June is also an exciting time as this is when the Cusco region celebrates Inti Raymi, the biggest festival in the area and one of the busiest times to visit Cusco.
If you are unable to find availability for this room, or would like to check out some of our other rooms, please use the links below.
Guests will have access to the main/shared room where we have areas for sitting and relaxing as well as a TV and laptop computer. Guests also have 24 hour access to the dining room, with access to filtered drinking water coffee and tea.
We live here at the property so you will most likely see us a lot, we always try and have dinner at the same time so that any guests wanting to, can join us for dinner. Breakfasts are a little different as, different guests need to leave at different times, depending on their schedules. Additionally, anytime we are not away transporting or taking guests on tours, we are here at the property.
Huarocondo is a small rural town set in an agricultural valley, located mid-way between Cusco and the Sacred Valley, with the main attraction being the beauty, peace and tranquility. There are plenty of roads and trails for hiking and the largest lake in the Cusco region is just 11.5 km to the North East. Additionally there are two archeological sites close by, Andenes Zurite which is 5.6 km to the south and the trail to Wata is 5.5 km to the North West. The property is located just one block from the Huarocondo main Plaza where you can sample the local specialty of lechon or roast pig, and there is also a large colonial church on the main plaza that houses several paintings, that we have been told, are more valuable than the ones in the cathedral in Cusco.
There are a few options for transportation in and out of town, depending on where you want to go. The first and easiest is for us to arrange a car and driver for you; this can be almost any time of day or night, and services range from basic transportation to full day tours.
There is also public transportation available in and out of town by either colectivos or buses. These start about 5:30am and will continue until either 6:30pm or 9:00pm depending on the route.
Our goal here at GringoWasi is that you to enjoy your vacation to the fullest, if you have any questions or need something, please don’t hesitate to ask. Just because we don’t “offer” something, doesn’t mean it is not within our ability to provide. We do our best to anticipate our guest’s needs but not all guests are the same, so don’t be afraid to ask.
We also send out a list of travel tips and other useful information after you have booked, sometimes this information will end up in your junk folder, so if you have booked with us, please check your junk folder after making the booking for additional information.
Lyle's place is an absolute paradise. Quiet and relaxing after the big cities traffic and noise. Lyle knows so much about Peru and always ready to share it with you, always ready to help and is full of energy. He gives you a lift, he picks you up, he co-ordinates everything so well: guests' arrivals, guests' tours, cooking breakfast and dinner... I felt immediately at home at their place, it was hard to leave. The rooms are very nice and extremely clean. The food is fresh, local, excellent. I will definitely turn back to their place on my next trip to Peru!!
I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at gringowasi. Lyle and Lilly put in a huge amount of effort to ensure that I and all of the guests had a great stay- from emails and bookings for macchu picchu before I arrived to helpful tips during my stay. Because I was traveling alone, I especially enjoyed sharing the evening meals with everyone. Huarocondo is in a beautiful valley and is certainly off the usual tourist trail.
If you are on a budget and planning on using public transport, you shouldn't have any trouble. You will, however, have to allow for time to make connections. Getting to Cusco involves one change in izcuchaca and takes about an hour. 5 soles in total. Helpful if you speak Spanish. If you are not on such a tight budget or short on time, Lyle/Lilly will arrange private transport for you.
We had a fabulous experience at GringoWasi with Lyle & Lily. We stayed for a week and took advantage of their home cooked, family style dinners as well as a tour through the Sacred Valley. Lyle & Lily are incredible hosts and have impeccable customer service. They are friendly, warm and instantaneously make you feel at home. GrinoWasi is outside of Cusco by about 30/45 minutes but it is just the spot for a quiet and more local experience. We often took the colectivos into Cusco and felt it was easily navigable and totally safe each and every time. Lyle and Lily are very knowledgeable about Cusco and the Sacred Valley and how to book tickets, to plan itineraries, and to answer any other questions you might possibly have. I couldn't more highly recommend staying here! Thanks for everything! Edie & Peter
After traveling for weeks where the nights and days blurred together, I arrived in Cusco after a 12 hour bus ride and Lyle was there to pick me up. What a relief.
After about 45 minutes of driving, we made it to Lyle and Lily's slice of paradise in Huarocondo. The town was small, traditional, and incredibly quiet (minus a few roosters). It was exactly what I needed. The bed was amazing, everything was clean, the hosts made breakfast every morning, and I was able to just decompress for a bit. The pace was slow, and the town was charming, Natives stop you in the street just to shake your hand. Such a different vibe from the other cities in Peru I have stayed. Buenas ondas ciento por ciento.
I will definitely be recommending this place to friends to get a real feel for Cusco and to meet the wonderful hosts.
Awesome place to relax and convenient location to access the Sacred Valley. Delicious food for dinner and breakfast. Lyle and Lily gave us suggestions about what to do and how to get around, which was way easier than spending the first day Googling around for stuff to do in the Cusco area. It's true that Huarocondo is not in the middle of Cusco, but I found it very refreshing to be away from the tourist crush for a little while, and it's an awesome opportunity to experience a Peruvian town that hasn't Westernized. Also, the lechón (roast pig) is a town specialty that you shouldn't miss. At the value that it is, GringoWasi is probably one of the better deals in the Cusco region. Definitely recommend.
Malgré le fait que nous soyons arrivés un jour plus tard (avion raté !) , l'accueil à été excellent. Lyle avait préparé notre séjour avec soin et nous nous sommes sentis comme chez nous!
Lyle and Lily's place is great. The location will give you a real Peruvian experience and the facilities are fine. But the best part is how Lyle and Lily take care of so many details to make your visit better. From help with seeing sites to great meals they seemed to have thought of everything. Thanks!
We had a really wonderful stay at GringoWasi. The place is beautiful, with large comfy rooms and great beds, plenty of blankets for the chilly weather, a huge living room to hang out in, great wifi, and yummy meals whenever desired. The town is tiny, but quite interesting, especially if you've never traveled to Latin America our outside of the touristy centers. When we originally arrived, we had been driving for 8 hours and were somewhat disappointed by the distance from GringoWasi to Cusco itself. If you have your own car, be prepared for a 45 minute drive each way. Cusco is absolutely amazing and so the hotel isn't the best place if you want lots of time to discover the city. However, it's the perfect place if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle and stay somewhere truly relaxing. You can only find that kind of comfort inside Cusco for a ton of money.
Lyle was so kind to us, waking up a 3 am on the day we went to Machu Picchu to prepare us breakfast and hot tea. He always made things easier on us and was literally there whenever we had a question or needed advice.
My only complaint is that the shower pressure was extremely limited and lukewarm. I'm not sure why this is exactly, as we stayed in other very remote places that had great pressure and temperature. This one thing is minor in the face of all the great things about the hotel though.
WOW. Lyle and Lily really go above and beyond. The B&B itself is beautiful and comfortable, and it´s situated in a lovely valley where there´s plenty of exploring to do. This is the perfect place to stay if you want to get off the beaten path. We happened to be there the weekend of a festival, and we had a blast watching the dances and fireworks and hanging out with our hosts, another guest, and other people we met there. We also enjoyed hiking around the area, going to a nearby town for their Sunday market, and relaxing some while adjusting to the altitude. Unfortunately, we were unable to take advantage of the tailored tours Lyle and Lily offer, but it´s clear that they know the area really well and they do all they can to ensure that their guests enjoy their stay. Lyle cooked us a delicious breakfast every morning, there was coca tea and coffee aplenty, and they even offer to cook dinner for guests at a great price. Lyle is very communicative from the time you make a reservation, and he even sent several helpful emails giving us tips before we left for Peru. I can´t say enough how much I appreciated all of the little extra things that Lyle and Lily both did to make our stay so wonderful. Thank you both!!
