A Truly Unique Santa Barbara Home...

Ocean views, mountain views, fruit trees, pool, hot-tub -- peaceful, quiet atmosphere. The ideal place to relax after your exciting day in Santa Barbara.

The Space

Lovely, private bedrooms and bathroom, suitable for 1-4 people. Enjoy a deep, restful sleep in the extra comfortable beds.

The two rental rooms share a comfortable, clean, two-room bathroom with tub and shower.

During long rentals, the house is cleaned once a week.

Great Location...

Short drive to the beach, downtown, shops, food stores, and restaurants. Safe, friendly neighborhood with easy freeway access and free parking.

Don't want to drive? Public transit to downtown is a short 5-minute walk away. Late at night, a taxi ride is fast and inexpensive.

Beauty and Tranquility...

Come here to visit and you can sit on the deck and watch the sun set into the ocean as I am (literally) right now as I write this description.

  • Great experience over the 4th of july weekend at Harley's. The house is exactly as listed: clean, comfortable, with a heated pool! Harley is very welcoming and helpful with recommendations of where to eat. The location is ~ $10 cab to downtown and even shorter to the closest beach. Plenty of safe street parking, and easy to get around the city from there.

  • First off let me say Harley is a really nice guy! However I would not recommend staying here - for the same price you can actually get a hotel room right on the beach with a TV in the room, a nice CLEAN bathroom and a CLEAN pool and hot tub. As well as some actual privacy. If you are just looking for a place to crash it'll work because the room is not actually big enough to do anything but sleep - there is no closet to hang you clothing, or TV, it's very stuffy and has one tiny desk top fan. We booked this place because we were excited about the pool. As soon as we saw it we were very sad, I had to spend 20 minutes fishing leaves, dead flowers and bugs out of it before we could even get in and then after 10 minutes of constantly getting dead flowers all over me and swishing away other floating debris, and stepping on yuckiness on the bottom we got out. The pool deck has possibly never been swept so it's covered in said dead flowers and plant debris. Had this listing been in the $100 range it'd be a different story but for the price we expected ALOT more.

    Response from Harley:

It is too bad that Marie had unrealistic expectations about what she was renting. She had virtually no experience with Airbnb and, clearly, expected a commercial hotel with maid service. I think that what Marie didn't understand is that a room in a private house is a lot different from an expensive hotel.

She made a reservation at the last minute; then she changed it; then she changed it again; and then she demanded money back. (And in spite of her inaccurate comments, a nice hotel in Santa Barbara, would cost more than twice as much than she paid. A hotel on the beach would cost a great deal more.)

The pool had just been cleaned professionally, the same day, before Marie arrived. The hottub, also, had just been cleaned and serviced that same day, and was perfectly clear and clean. (Because Santa Barbara is experiencing a severe drought, a recent law requires all pools to have covers. And, when the cover is pulled off, any leaves or flowers on the cover fall in the water. There is no way around this. Everyone in Santa Barbara has the same problem.)

Marie and her husband were provided with a bedroom that had just been cleaned, with freshly laundered sheets, and fleshly laundered towels, and shelve space for their clothes. They were here on a particularly warm evening, and they were given a fan for their room. The room also has a window overlooking the pool, which lets in an ocean breeze. When they arrived, they were invited to use the kitchen and dining room, as well as the library.

However, Marie and her husband were among the most ungracious, bad-attitude people I have ever had stay with me. It was uncomfortable just having them around, and I was glad to see them leave. Unfortunately, they just don't understand the idea of sharing living space. I am sorry that I ever agreed to host them -- it can be hard to tell in advance -- but if you are a host reading this, I advise you to avoid them.

My suggestion to Marie is to stay away from Airbnb -- which you clearly don't understand -- and stay at commercial hotels. It will cost you a lot more money, but you will at least be in a place that meets your unrealistic expectations, and where good manners aren't important.

I have had many people -- over 175 in fact -- stay here and people universally have a good experience. (Take a moment to read some of the reviews below, including comments about the pool.)

  • Very friendly host and a very special home. We enjoyed the pool and the proximity to town or the beach. Just a few minutes to any place and lots to do.
We hope to get back to Santa Barbara and here sometime in the future.

  • Harley was a great host and it was a pleasure to stay with him. He was very professional, courteous, and thorough. He gave us some wonderful recommendations of local spots in the area. Harley's down to earth personality and approachable demeanor made us feel at ease. I would definitely stay there again.

  • Harley, was awesome. He replied right away. I was kind of stranded in Santa Barbara, all the hotels where booked and he was willing to pick me up and communicated promptly. Would highly recommend.

  • Harley is a great host and friend. He is so nice and really like my previous teacher, very patient, friendly and doing things in detail.
When my friends and I went to his place, we found it was a such warm, clean and nice house. After chatting, Harley even played piano and sing songs for us. It is such wonderful night, I am sure I would take my daughter and my wife came back one day, soon or later.

  • I booked Harley's rooms for a group of my friends from China and Chicago: Xin and Ann with their laughter Flavia; Chengcheng and her husband Craig on Sep 30. Harley was so responsible that he made a phone call to me when he was about to go out for less than a hour. He wouldn't let my friends wait for him when he was out! My friends had a wonderful stay at Harley's house, just like what I experienced about two months ago. The location is beautiful and quiet, which offered a perfect surrounding for the morning run. Standing by Harley's front door, we had a view of both of the sea and the mountains. Harley's rooms were clean and cozy. Flavia liked playing with Harley's dog Casey very much.
My friends were impressed by Harley's honesty, responsibility and hospitality. Xin told me they liked Santa Barbara so much and they would definitely come to stay here again some when he visits next time.

Thank you Harley. My wife and I will also like to come back.

  • My family and I felt so disappointed about the one night stay there, the rooms were small the quilts were torn, my mother in law was bothered by the bed small of the bed sheet and could not sleep well. The whole house was nice but the host didn't clean it well and no service at all. He said he would give us clean towels but nothing , fortunately we had our own towels . He reminded us several times to turn off the light, that was just 5 minutes after we turned on the light ... I was so regret that I chose this one to stay , and it costed even more than hotel but I'd rather choose motel than this one.... Oh, he doesn't allow us to park on his driveway, so we just parked on the street.

    Response from Harley:

Many, many people have enjoyed staying here and have loved the accommodations. (Please take a moment to read the rest of the reviews.)

In fact, the rooms used by Carmen's family were cleaned professionally two days before her arrival. And the sheets on all the beds were freshly laundered (using a no-fragrance detergent) on the day of her arrival.

There was Carmen's very first (in fact, only) experience with Airbnb and, unfortunately, her expectations were unrealistic. Some of the misunderstanding may have been because the description of the house and the email correspondence were both in English, which is not her first language. This language barrier and the inadvertent misconceptions have, unfortunately, led to several misleading and deceptive statements.

Carmen was traveling with a small baby, her husband, and her mother-in-law. When she booked the reservation, she had absolutely no idea that she would be sharing someone's house. The online description of the house and the rooms are quite clear. However, for whatever reason, Carmen was not able to read it. In fact, she thought she was renting an entire house, all to herself, with maid service.

Because Carmen expected full hotel service, special parking, maids, immaculate rooms, and so on, she was disappointed as soon as she arrived. For example, there isn't room to turn around a car on the driveway, so guests park on the street. However, Carmen expected exclusive use of the driveway.

From what Carmen said, her mother-in-law had multiple complaints: her room, the size of the room, the quilt on the bed, the sheets, the lack of maid service, and so on. Apparently, the mother-in-law was unable to sleep all night, because of the "smell" of the sheets. (However, the sheets had been freshly laundered with no-fragrance soap.)

Unfortunately, Carmen thought she was staying at a commercial hotel, one with daily, professional maid service, special parking, attendants, and so on. In retrospect, had I known, I would have advised her, gently, to keep looking for something more suitable for herself and her family.

  • I had the opportunity to stay at Harley's with my boyfriend and another couple. As other reviewers have stated, this is a SHARED house. However, Harley made sure that we felt comfortable and accommodated in every way possible. We had full use of all the facilities in the house and his dog Casey was such a joy to be around! Harley works hard to keep the house in a very clean condition and the rooms are very cozy. The house has breathtaking views and is in a quiet area so it is a very peaceful stay. Although the house is in a more quiet area, there are so many wonderful food joints, beaches, and little town shops within 5-15 mins of driving. We especially enjoyed our breakfasts on State street! :)

  • Harley was very kind, knowledgeable, and a perfect host: made sure we were familiar with the area, made sure we were comfortable, and made sure we were taken care of. He was always quick to offer advice on where to eat or what to do. Overall my girlfriend and I had a pleasant stay with Harley. It worked well for us because we just needed a place to sleep for the night, but for those looking for a more private space to spend time in, I suggest keep looking.
