  • We had a great week in the Muir properties. We rented the main house and the apartment over the garage and enjoyed the decor and beachy feel of both the home and the area.

Helene was great to work with, being both friendly and accommodating. Check-in and check-out procedures were clear and reasonable, and we would definitely look to her for a future rental.

This was our first vacation in San Diego, so just in case anyone else is in the same situation, I wanted to note that there is one parking pad in the back of the house, reached via the alley. Other than that, it's catch-as-catch can on the street. Sometimes we were able to park right in front, and sometimes blocks away. That's not a negative to the house, it was just surprising to us, being unfamiliar with the area. We were hosting a family reunion, so had three cars.

To end on a totally positive note, we felt at home and very relaxed here. The bikes, towels, chairs and other beach items were very much appreciated since we all came from far away. We loved the neighborhood and enjoyed watching the surfers and sunsets on the beach. We made full use of the hammock, grill and courtyard as well. Everything we needed was available and felt welcoming and cozy. We will always treasure our time in this house.

    Response from Helene:

Hey Kellie! Thanks for the feedback, it seems your group may have missed the garage? I have information in all of the welcome binders, but I think after reading this I am going to get my craft on and make some Parking/ Garage Signs! Being so close to the beach, especially in our busy holiday season Parking is a bit tricky with 3 cars, so will be sure that future guests plan accordingly ;)

  • My family had a great stay at this property with plenty of room to spare even for 10 people. The neighborhood is quite nice with restaurants, bars, groceries, and attractions just walking distance away. And, of course, the beach nearby is just fantastic and pretty well maintained.

The front house is a bit older home, but it was well decorated and we enjoyed hanging out at the living room and having family dinner at the dinning room. The back apartment was newer and had a more updated feel and also a great hang out space.

Two things that needs to be noted are that parking is difficult if there are more than 2 vehicles in the party. The parking garage for the house has a sharply angled ramp and is only suitable for mid to small size SUVs. Street parking can be difficult to find at times. Also, there is another tenant at the property, but she does have her own separate unit and is quite friendly and helpful.

  • 11 of us gathered here from all across the country for a college reunion, and we were very satisfied with both houses on Helene's property. They were both very clean, and nicely decorated. The hidden treasures included an accordion, a melodica, and a large, purple, feathered hat that we found in the cupboard. We spend a lot of time in the back yard gathered around the orange, outdoor fireplace, which we fed with firewood we found on the property. One of the guests slept in the airstream and enjoyed it, although the mornings in March can be a little cold.

We spent a majority of our days on the beach, which is 3 short blocks away and used the surf and boogie boards that we found in the garage. Downtown Ocean Beach (on Newport Ave.) is a fun, quirky slice of Southern Californian beach culture, and has the best fish tacos (it doesn't matter which restaurant you go to). We shopped at the organic grocery store that was a few blocks away, and grabbed libations at the adjacent liquor store.

We met Helene once, while she was working on improving the property further, and she was very nice and accommodating. Although we didn't need anything, we all felt that we could call her and ask at anytime.

Overall, it was a great trip. The only downside is the airplanes that noisily fly overhead starting at about 7:30 am in the morning. It is fine when you are inside, but can make talking a little tough when you are outside (overall, not a huge problem).

  • We loved staying at the Ocean Beach house. It had everything we needed and more. Really appreciated the attention to detail. Lovely interior, Helene has great taste! Great location, close to the stores, restaurants and the beach. Highly recommended!

  • This house is very sweet and comfortable. We enjoyed San Diego like local people, and the instruction is very helpful.

  • My family and I (11 persons) had a wonderful time in Helens two houses. We held our Christmas holiday in San Diego and it was a perfect location for two families travelling together. We loved the city and would love to go back some day :-)

About
HI! I am a photographer and my husband is a musician and scientist. Our house is our sanctuary and we love to share it with others for their own little slice of paradise while on vacation or staycation. The Juniper Zen Palace is a 2 bedroom house and serves as our primary residence, although we vacate when the entire home is rented. We have an extra detached guest suite with its own bathroom, fridge, and microwave that is available as well and sleeps 2, or is available with the entire house for an additional charge. Our pride and joy is our Mobile Love Den, a 1958 Dalton canned ham that is fully restored and has gotten rave reviews so be sure to check that out if that sort of thing floats your boat! We will also rent out our inside guest bedroom by itself sometimes, so email if you are just looking for one room. We have a small dog, June Bug, who is a Boston Terrier. She stays at her friend's house when the entire home is rented. If you intend to rent the suite or spare room, please be warned that she may come in for a morning snuggle and may jump on your luggage when you first arrive. Our home is a charming early 20th century craftsman that has been nicely restored and is designed in our own eclectic style. If you rent the whole house, you'll have shelves full of LP records, cd's, and great books to keep you company. Also at your disposal are fresh fruit and veggies from the garden, backyard bbq, fire pit, cabana and banquet table with night lights, hammock under the tall bamboo and banana trees, and many more simple but fun delights. We truly do love hosting people and have had great guests from all over the world gracing the pages of our guest book.
