We had the most amazing time staying at Casa Del Halcon in beautiful Samara. There were three of us: my daughter and her friend (both 15) and myself and we loved this house. It would have fit 4 or 5 people, comfortably. There was plenty of room for everyone to have their own space and down-time after days spent taking part in the many activities available in the area. Chris was wonderful. He is quiet and kind and helpful. He was very helpful in setting up several day trips, including kayaking/snorkeling with Javi and horseback riding with Georgia. (I would highly recommend both of these!) He also arranged our transport from and to the airport. We thought we were going to rent a car but never did as it was so easy to get around with the bikes available right at the house and the rides that were included in some of the activities. The three beaches near the house, all within walking distance, we're just beautiful and the girls loved the walk (or bike ride) through the woods, filled with birds, lizards, and monkeys. This place is a nature-lovers dream. It's not your high-end resort stay but that's not what we were looking for. We were looking for someplace just like this and couldn't have been happier than we were there! Thank you so much!!
Lovely experience at Casa Del Halcon. My husband and I came here for some true rest and absolutely found that. The market and beaches are close. The town is a little further but with the provided bikes, it's basically around the corner. The kitchen is stocked with all you need, linens provided, and screened windows which is nice at night. We used the hammocks and small pool daily. The place isn't perfect but it's the quiet, oasis with great private space we wanted. Absolutely recommended!
We arrived at Casa Del Halcon and it was everything we thought it would be and then some. Chris is a very kind whole hearted person who welcomed us from the start. At times he went above and beyond what he needed to do to make our trip more memorable. We felt very much at home and at peace at Casa Del Halcon.
Chris showed us around, gave us a run down of his place and then allowed us to explore on our own. His house is at the back and the other rental home is to the side a bit but with the layout of his property and the jungle landscape you don't even know anyone else exists. The pictures were 100% accurate so there were no surprises. He lives in an incredible area of Samara, more jungle like and closer to Buena Vista beach. We used the bikes that came with the house a few times but honestly, we really enjoyed the walk to the beach everyday. The Samara beach is 25 min. if you walk gingerly to the farther end by the last surf school. There really is no need to rush anything while you are there. You could be there in 15 minutes if you wanted to.
The washing machine was a great bonus. We did do a load or two and it was very efficient. Chris also told us to exchange towels if we wanted but we didn't need to. The fact that he gives bath and beach towels was a huge bonus. There is an air conditioner in one bedroom but honestly, the fans were great. We used it one night to cool the room off with and then we turned if off before bed.
We would see Chris most days, he would never invade your privacy but he would take time to talk and also offer suggestions or directions when asked. My husband and I really enjoyed our conversations with Chris, we will definitely be back to continue them. Life really is about 6 degrees of separation and in our case, apparently only two degrees which was a great surprise! I do regret not taking more time to learn about his meditation practices but that leaves us with more reasons to return.
Chris has an awesome dog Ganesh, he is just over a year, a little "monkey" at times but we loved that about him. He has a personality that you don't see in most dogs. He is an amazing guard dog. We discovered he would bark more when Chris wasn't there, usually in the evening when Chris was teaching. Ganesh somehow knew he had to watch the property. We felt 100% safe there, no questions at all and with Ganesh especially it helped to make the trip more memorable.
If you want a laid back atmosphere, a peaceful presence, a jungle feel with the ocean minutes away, Casa Del Halcon is your place.
Pura Vida, Thanks Chris!
Great accommodation with a very lush and cozy garden. Chris was helpful and friendly. The nearest beach was not the most child friendly but easily accessible. The pool in the garden was a wonderful asset during the hot afternoons. Next time visiting Samara we will definitely stay here again.
The photos don't even do this place justice. The garden is lovely, like a mini paradise, the house is spacious, the pool is small, but very nice. The beach is really closeby.
The house itself is indeed, as I've read before, a little 'rough around the edges'. But if you don't focus on the small details (that, honestly, don't really matter since you're in paradise), you will have a great stay at a place where there is a good kitchen, shower, nice bed, great hammocks, a nice livingroom....
It's also a big plus that Chris will let you use two bikes, it was a great way to see more of the surroundings and to go to the village.
Beware that it can happen that there is no water. This happened two times during our stay, we were one and a half day without water, but this was the case in the whole village. Just stay relaxed and go to the beach ;)
We only got to meet Chris on the last day of our stay, a friend of his was hosting us. Chris seemed like a quiet, friendly guy and it seems he is a nice host.
This house is highly recommendable, we had a great stay.
Chris' house was exactly as described and had everything you'd need for a short or extended stay. Pots, pans, utensils, etc. were all there and there was a market within walking distance. In fact, everything is within walking distance! Chris provided bath towels, beach towels, and sheets for all of us.
Since this was our first Airbnb experience, we had many questions for Chris and he was always able to help. He was there when you needed him, but definitely gave you space. He would casually check in to say "hi" and make sure everything was going well and then go on with his day.
Directions in Costa Rica vary dramatically from the US, so landmarks, number of turns, piles of dirt, etc. are all fair markers.
Samara is awesome! We'll definitely be back.
Hawk's place on the outskirts of Samara was perfect for us: beautiful; serene; and close enough to reach town and beaches by foot or bike but far enough to avoid traffic and noise. The house was modest yet had everything two people needed. The dip pool in the back was cold and refreshing against the dry season's heat. Hawk was attentive and available, yet respected the privacy we sought. We had dozens of things to do. Hawk's place was the perfect platform for doing them all, or none of them. Recommended for self-reliant travelers who create their own adventures; not recommended for tourists dependent on glossy amenities and guided experiences.
