Staying at Dong's house in Hanoi was a wonderful welcome for a first time visitor to Vietnam. I had a great time getting lost and found again in the old quarter and area near Hoan Kiem Lake, ate more than my fair share of street food, and now have no fear of crossing the road! :)
I was ever so grateful for the airport transfer, and was greeted by Dong and her Australian counterpart Narelle. On my first afternoon in town, Dong was kind enough to heat up some tasty home cooked food for my belated lunch, and Narelle helped me with some laundry and walked me around some of the neighbourhood so I could get my bearings. I felt immediately at home!
The room I stayed in was quite spacious, with a nice big bed and wardrobe with plenty of room to unpack my backpack into. Aircon is always a blessing in this humidity but the room was quite cool even without it turned on all the time.
The neighbourhood is safe at day and night, with plenty of food options within walking distance, and not too noisy to sleep at night but bring earplugs if you are bothered by traffic (I think it's hard to escape this in hanoi generally)!
I only had two breakfasts (included) while staying here, which were simple but tasty. Toast and eggs with fruit one day and same with omelette the other day. But there is pho ga (chicken noodle soup) a stone's throw from the front door if you want to eat like the Vietnamese do. :)
Thanks to Dong, Narelle, and staff for easing me into Vietnam. Hope to see you again in Hanoi next time!
There are only good things I can say about our stay at Dong's home. The room was big and clean, A/C worked perfectly, Dong offered us to do our laundry which is very helpful when you travel for 3 weeks with the same clothes! She also booked us a wonderful cruise to Ha Long Bay, and when we returned, the laundry was done and a delicious home-made Vietnamese dinner was waiting for us! When we were leaving she also booked us a taxi so we wouldn't have to worry about getting to the airport safe and cheap. Thank you Dong once again for making us feel like at home and we recommend your accomodation to everyone.
Dong's homestay highly recommended! You are unlikely going to regret it. She and Narelle made our transition into Vietnam extremely easy. She prearranged a taxi (~25) for us from Noi Ba airport which madeit stress free as we arrived at 11 PM. They stayed up to midnight to meet us. I would look forward to returning.
Breakfast was included. Our room was very clean and towels provided. We were also able to have laundry done at home. Wifi is available on every floor. Easy walking to Hoan Kiem Lake and old quarter.
Narelle was very accommodating pointing out to us where to get SIM card, a money exchange with excellent rates (no tourist there) and good recommendations.
We booked our Ha Long Bay tour with Dong's Travel. They only recommend tours they believe of value and the ones they heard the best feedback from. We also booked put train tickets with them and they picked best seats in our soft sleeper. She also prepped some food for our daytime train ride because she didn't trust the food on the train. The train station is a 15 min walk away.
Our stay with Dong and Narelle was a most Pleasant one. They kindly arranged for transport after our arrival at Hanoi airport and were helpful with helping us book our trip to Ha Long Bay and our overnight train to Hue. The rooms and washrooms are nice, big, clean and comfortable. Even though we did not use it as we had just gotten to vietnam they offer a laundry service as well. The Homestay is situated in a quiet street which makes sleeping at night very easy. It is well located within 10 minutes walk to Hoan Kiem Lake and 15 minutes walk away to the Old quarter.
We felt welcome and at home for our first few days in Vietnam and it's exactly what we needed. Would definitely recommend staying here to anybody stopping in Hanoi for a while.
Excellent place to stay particularly for me as a sole traveller. I was made feel very welcome by Dong & Narelle; they were great company. Nothing was too much trouble for then. They were able to provide great advice on local attractions and travel. Narelle is Australian & has been residing in Hanoi for a number of years so has good local knowledge. Dong and Narelle run a travel company & were able to organise travel, airport transfers & tours at very competitive prices. Ngoc is an excellent cook and I was given the opportunity to dine with them & enjoy many traditional meals. There were also many restaurants within close proximity offering both local & international food.
The room was spacious & bed comfortable with clean crisp sheets. The accommodation is well located with many attractions within walking distance and bus service close by.
Alles super!
We can highly recommend Dong's home. It is situated within a quiet area amongst lots of cute cafes, quite easy to find, within easy walking distance of Lake Hoan Kiem and more.
The home itself is gorgeous - beautifully kept lounge and kitchen are available to guests and become a place to sit and chat or trade travel information. Rooms are upstairs. One bathroom shared between two rooms. Lovely, good quality clean, new sheets and towels. Hot water was excellent.
Laundry is available to guests. Guests can do it themselves - or may have it done for them. An area to dry them outside includes hanging space and electric dryer.
Breakfast - eggs, toast, hot drink etc is included in the price. Other meals are available for lunch or dinner if you wish. Dong's helper was also running a cooking course in their home on one of the days we stayed.
The best part of all was warm, friendly, kind, funny and genuinely interesting and interested host, Dong. We felt so welcome here. I think anyone choosing to stay here would have a wonderful time - put aside some time to chat with your host - a very interesting woman who loves life!
Don't hesitate :)
Andrea (and Paul) - stayed as a couple in a double room (not sure whether they're all double).
We had a wonderful time in this apartment. It was very comfortable, well equipped and centrally located. We stayed for three weeks and were able to really able to enjoy this neighborhood. Loved the sound of the Cathedral bells and the chanting of the sutras from the pagoda nearby. Being in the center of the city, there is always a bit of a noise factor but the apartment is tucked down an alleyway and it isn't bad. The best part is the hospitality extended by Dong and Narelle who are committed to make your stay the best and will answer your questions, help you with logistics and get you moving quickly. Be sure the check out Halong Bay....Dong booked me with Calypso Cruise which was just great. I would recommend the longer tour since my two day-one night wasn't long enough in such a magical land.
Be sure to go to the Women's Museum and the Water Puppet shows.
I stayed here for longer because I worked in Hanoi for a while so that is why i really wanted to write a Review on aibnb. I had one of the best times of my life in Hanoi and Dongs Homestay played a big role in creating this feeling. In short words: she is just a wonderful host. She cares about everything. She helps you with every problem and solves it fast. She is a person you can laugh with and she has wonderful tips for everything you need. Furthermore I had great meals in this house. One of the best cooks I ever made. Moreover it is much more comfortable to stay here compared to a hotel. First the rooms are lovely: Big, very clean, comfortable and western style, what means that it is very luxory compared to other places in vietnam. Second it is a very central Location. Just a few minutes to Hoan Kiem Lake. Last it is a much better feeling to stay with friends compared to staying with hotel stuff. All in all it is a great place. If I can give you one advise stay with Dong when you visit Hanoi.
Since I arrived at Dong's homestay, she and Narelle have done their best to make this place feel like a home to me and the other residents. Dong is very friendly, always willing to help, and very funny too, and Narelle (who also works as an English teacher) is always good for a chat and a bit of help with my English lesson-planning if I need it. Both have been a pleasure to live with and I think they are awesome, they've really made a difference to my stay in Hanoi.
The rooms are nice and large, air con, drawers, big comfy bed, everything you want in a room. There's a bathroom on each floor, and the communal area is open plan and relaxed and a good place to chill out with Dong, Narelle and the other guests. So far I've met several Australians, a Vietnamese, four Americans, a Danish and a German, and everyone has been really friendly and fun.
There's home cooking if you should want it (and I often did, it's s(phone number hidden)good - there is a small additional charge for lunch and dinner but it's very reasonable), and if you stick your dirty clothes outside your bedroom door they will be in your room, washed, dry and folded, by the next day.
The location is great. It's right in the middle of a tiny maze of small streets that opens out onto some wider main roads, and there's so much nearby, from more Western-style restaurants and reasonably fancy-looking clothes and shoe shops just round the corner, to proper Vietnamese sit-on-a-miniscule-stool-on-the-street-gobbling-bowls-of-noodles style food places. All are good. It's a short walk to Hoan Kiem Lake and the larger shops, including the big old fancy department store. For me it was super-convenient, being as it is a 10 minute walk to the Apollo Centre, where I was studying for 4 weeks.
All in all, really fun stay, great hosts and good value. Thank you guys!
