Beautifully furnished apartment, convenient location, all with a great view and breeze.
(note: please inquire about discounts for stays of 4+ nights, also please shoot me a message before submitting a reservation request for one-night stays as I only accept them depending on other reservations.)
The space includes a stocked kitchen, living area with fantastic views of the last Spanish Fort in the New World as well as the surrounding hills, bedroom area with a new and very comfortable Serta bed (mattress and pillows protected by hotel-grade allergen-proof cases for any allergy sufferers), an extra air bed if needed, clean bathroom, wi-fi, Bose computer speakers for your laptop or smartphone, etc. The apartment also includes just about all you need for a great day at the beach: cooler, chairs, beach towels, etc.
This apartment is definitely a great chance to experience local life in Vieques as well as the convenience of having everything you need within walking distance--get fantastic Puerto Rican coffee at Roy's or La Panaderia in the mornings, stroll through one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the world on the way to a drink and views at Al's Mar Azul in the afternoon, and walk down to holiday festivities in the town plaza at night. The benefits of the in-town locale does come with the occasional noise of daily life: the trucks coming off the cargo ferry, roosters crowing (although that's pretty much everywhere on the island!), and the occasional kid playing reggaeton while driving down main street. Some weekend and holiday nights are noisier than others, though some can be very quiet. For this reason, I keep the rates the same on weekends and holidays as the weekday rate
While I spend a lot of time in the States, if I am not in Vieques during your stay, the property manager lives nearby if a problem should arise. Also, having lived and worked on the island for a number of seasons, I am happy to provide advice regarding any and all aspects of Vieques, and to answer any questions you might have before and during your trip via airbnb, phone, or e-mail.
2 guest maximum. Check-in/check-out is generally flexible, but if schedules of those checking in and checking out conflict, you are welcome to stash any gear, use the bathroom, etc. in the locked extra apartment if arriving early or leaving on a late flight or ferry.
Anything and everything in the apartment.
Interaction with Guests
As much or as little as desired. I think I'm fairly competent at reading people and generally default to staying out of guests way and erring on the side of privacy.
Everything you need within walking distance, and great neighbors to boot! Vieques is a rough-around the edges kind of place and I wouldn't say there are a ton of great blocks on this island. But I do think I live on one of them.
Publicos (taxi vans) are generally easy to flag down from main street if you don't rent a Jeep/Car/Moped. They're reasonable cost-wise, though they won't take you to a couple of the most remote beaches.
Please respect the apartment as if it were your own. Vieques can be a pretty quiet place after dark (except for a couple of bars and town parties) and neighbors can hear everything as windows are always open to let in the light and breeze. so please no loud noise or music after 9:00/10:00 on weekends.
And if you could be mindful of the vintage pajilla furniture--don't sit on it while wet (stretches the pajilla), etc--it would be appreciated!
NO SMOKING in the apartment!
We really enjoyed our stay in Vieques! Such a relaxing beautiful island! Mason's place was comfortable, clean and a great location. He was very attentive to our needs and fun to talk with. We would stay at his place again!
I really liked the place and it was and would certainly stay there again if i ever head back to Vieques.
Planning the trip- answered all my questions (in great detail), I did not have to research a lot as Mason provided all the answers.
During the trip- we met up several times to discuss how we can optimize our time to visit different places/tours, as I got the car rental for just 70% of my stay. each and every suggestion of his was worthwhile.
Apartment- excellent location, no frills but comfortable apartment, beach chairs provided.
This was the perfect spot for me - it's tucked away into a local residential street with a lovely view, yet is only steps away from supermarkets and cafes. It's quiet at night, and as far as roosters go, putting the fan on low drowned them out completely. The apartment is charming and comfortable, with beautiful old furniture, a full kitchen, plus all the beach/snorkel gear you'll need. Don't worry about not having AC, at least in March. There's always a breeze, and I actually had to use an extra blanket one night. Mason, the host, is a really great. He strikes the right balance between friend and host, and will give you all the info you need to have a great stay.
Wonderful experience. Super close and safe walk from ferry terminal. host was completely knowledgeable about his area and the island. he bent over backwards to make my trip as great as possible. As is common with most puerto ricans, all of the neighbors know each other. most are bilingual. the apartment is accommodating and clean. Super bright in the mornings. Vieques is a super safe place to practice your spanish, so feel free to speakee your best spannee. The locals are all so fabulous and accommodating. As is common with all houses in Isabella, the windows allow you to take in the tropical area, rooster sounds, cars, slowly galloping horses, and local music from passerby car rentals. If you want quiet, rent out the multi-thousand per night villas near the W hotel. If you want the normal, typical local flavor, this is perfect. His Hi speed internet was super useful as my Verizon service was basically non-existent on the island. Neighborhood is old world chic with tons to do --including galleries, bars, restaurants, or simply people watching. my opinion is that if you are looking to get creative with your new camera, the downtown area is perfect, as are some of other parts of the area. the place is cute with some windows providing a distant water view; others of a historic and touristy old fort. I walked to terminal each time i needed a cab and was able to catch a public van for $2, aka publicos. The publico cabbies are bilingual and deal with tourists 24/7 so they arent trying to hustle you. find a group of tourists and wait with them for the vans- you meet the most unique people from all over the world. the vans make numerous stops so they arent at uber speed. If you have a family, i would recommend a car rental-especially if you dont want to miss all of the beaches and other trendy parts of the island. 1 or 2 days is not enough. 4 days to me is perfect to take in vieques.
Mason provides the prefect home for an island getaway. His accommodations are clean and well stocked with water and beach accessories. Highly recommended for your time in Vieques!
My experience at Mason's was wonderful. I enjoyed staying in the neighborhood walking distance to restaurants. Safe area very friendly neighbors you get to see the real Vieques. Mason was awesome communicating through the entire time. I would highly recommend staying with Mason. Very helpful and outgoing! I will be returning thanks Mason! Sarah feb 2015
