My stay with David could not have been worse. Two of my friends and I were coming to New York City for two nights and when we got to David's place, nothing was how it seemed to be when viewing his page on Airbnb. First of all, he charged us $310 per night instead of the advertised $299. The space was completely different than how it appears to be on his listing. None of the pictured furniture was there when I stayed. In the main living space, chairs were randomly stacked on top of tables and there were miscellaneous items stuffed into the corner by the window, blocking a much-needed a/c on a hot day. The kitchen was reorganized and various utensils were strewn on top of the counters and in the sink. Upstairs in the bedrooms, none of the pictured furniture was there and the beds only had bottom sheets and pillows without pillowcases. The sheets were dirty too (grit and dust flew up upon sitting on them).
I immediately talked to David about canceling the second night and staying somewhere else because his place was not as advertised. It was late in the day, making it hard to find a hotel to stay in, otherwise I would have proposed an immediate departure and refund. David became defensive and accusatory, giving me an all-or-nothing proposition. This meant that either I would stay both nights or would "bounce" immediately and get a refund. Needless to say, I "bounce[d]" and ended up staying in a $400/night Hilton room in Midtown.
Figuring out the refund with David led to even more difficulties. He waited a full week before even contacting Airbnb about the refund. He was spotty with replies, taking several four-day gaps in his messaging. He said that he called Airbnb and was waiting on a reply, meaning that there was nothing else he could do. After two weeks of waiting, I took matters into my own hands and am now in direct contact with Airbnb on that refund.
David sold his place well - it looks like it's taken straight off of a 'Mad Men' set and is quaint. Looks are definitely deceiving. His space is cluttered, filthy, and disorganized and his service is sporadic, disrespectful, and unhelpful. I definitely feel like I was being cheated. I would not recommend his 'Village Green Townhouse' to anyone.
My friends and I stayed at David's place only over one night, but that was a truly great experience! The apartment is quiet big so it's perfect for a group of friends or a family. David was very helpful and flexible with checking us in and out, he responded for last minute booking request! The area is very peaceful and quite, good options for restaurants and bars just around the corner! Thank you very much! We will be definitely back!
David was a great host. Our plans changed at the last minute and he was very flexible and helpful. His space is LARGE and the bed in the master bedroom very comfortable. I would certainly stay with him again.
Great host, nice area! Apartment could have been cleaner but had an overall good friendly vibe in a good neighbourhood. Check out Marks pizza for a great New York slice!
My friends and I had a great stay at David's place. Everything was clean and fully stocked. The backyard was a great place to hang out. The furniture is funky and interesting. Our only issue was that the grill wouldn't fully heat up.
My husband and I and our 4 adult children stayed overnight while in town for a wedding. The townhouse was clean and tidy, with enough space and hot water for all of us. The lower level is all new. David was a pleasure to deal with, answering emails promptly, checking in by phone before our stay and meeting us on arrival to show us around and answer our questions. I would recommend it to others in a similar situation.
We were very disappointed to find that the townhouse was not represented appropriately. The pictures on aribnb were not representative of what we encountered when we arrived. We entered into a hallway that was cluttered and very dirty. The townshouse itself was also cluttered with too much furniture blocking the hallway and all the rooms had so much furniture and stuff that it was difficult to move around and find a place to put our suitcases and other belongings. The linen on the beds was not clean, had animal hair and dirty spots. Thanks goodness I thought to bring our own sheets and towels. We had to clean out the bathtub downstairs because it has human hair in it (that was not ours). The shower upstairs had the tenants personal care items in the shower and on all storage surfaces which left very little room for us to put what we needed out to use. The floors were dirty so you had to make sure you had your shoes on or your feet and or socks got dirty. I would not recommend this townhouse to anyone. My son in law is an electrician and he was concerned about the "vintage" lighting which had been rewired inappropriately and created a safety hazzard. Ladies - there was only one mirror in the upstairs bathroom with which 5 people had to get ready to attend a wedding. The overcrowded rooms could also present a safety issue in getting out of the townhouse efficiently in case of fire.
David's place is in a great Red Hook location - not too far a walk to Smith St. and the subway (like 10 minutes) and really close to some great Red Hook bars and restos. We really appreciated the free parking and WiFi. I never got to meet David but that was because I never had an issue that needed to be addressed! The rental was very low-maintenance and a perfect crash pad for all six of us.
The area was safe and easy to access Brooklyn Park by bicycle. There was ample parking available right outside. David was quick to communicate and helpful with directions and (email hidden)e rooms didn't look the same as the pictures shown; they were less clean and the furniture was different and less organized.. The second bath is really only 1/2 bath because can't use shower. The host lives above the rental and there was alot of noise all night long, furniture being moved, banging. It was a Saturday night, but not conducive to rest before a 50 mile bike ride. Overall the price is right, the place is safe, but I was disappointed don't expect much.
