Loft Apartment, Nr Downtown and WSU

Apartment - Private room · Selden St, Detroit, MI 48208, United States

Comfortably sized guest room in a loft-style apartment. Hard-wood floors, exposed brick and tons of light throughout, this recent renovation is modern and luxurious, but situated in a turn of the century building, comes with lots of old charm.

The Space

This listing is for a private room with a queen sized bed with direct access to a shared en suite bathroom. We provide all linens and towels, tea, coffee and basic spices.

We live in Woodbridge, a historic, quiet and safe neighborhood of Detroit, located just west of Wayne State campus and Midtown, about 2 miles from downtown. The apartment is minutes from all freeways, and 20 minutes from DTW international airport. There is ample street parking around the house.

Our apartment has two bedrooms (1.5 baths) and is in a converted turn of the century brick building. It has tons of character - oak wood floors throughout, exposed brick - and is full of light. Its a modern and luxurious conversion, but with lots of old charm. There is a big east facing deck and a shared back yard. In the link to the 'street view' you can see the building (red brick with yellow and green woodwork) with yard and garages to the back . The apartment is the first floor rear, with direct access to the backyard. We have a super friendly black lab, and a super cute cat here to welcome you on your return each day.

We live 10 minutes by foot from the neighborhood bar for local beers and eats, 15 minutes on foot to midtown, and a short drive or bike ride downtown to dozens of bars and restaurants, the stadiums, riverfront and Eastern Market. Public transport is thin on the ground in the motor city, but we have two bikes available for use if you want to explore. Detroit has large, flat, quiet roads, so its a perfect city to bike in. We keep these bikes equipped with locks, lights, spare tires and helmets and ask for $5/bike/day or $15 for your whole stay as a contribution to their upkeep.

We have made a map with suggestions about places to go and things to see, and have local maps and a copy of the latest guidebook to Detroit for guests to use. We are also very happy to chat and divulge all of Detroit's hidden gems to the inquisitive!

Please feel free to email with any questions. The whole apartment may be available for rent with a bit of notice, so please email with any queries about that.

Thanks!

Sophie and Chris

Guest Access

We provide all linens and towels. Guests a welcome to help themselves to tea, coffee and basic spices, and to use the kitchen to make meals should they wish to.

Interaction with Guests

As little or as much as feels right. Every guest is different. We are happy to chat and divulge information about local treats, as well as leave you in peace to explore the city at your leisure.

The Neighborhood

Woodbridge is one of Detroit's most vibrant, safe and stable neighborhoods. Full of tree-lined streets with turn of the century houses it is beautiful and welcoming. Woodbridge has a weird and wonderful collection of inhabitants, many of whom share a great passion about the neighborhood and city as a whole. There is a fantastic sense of community here - like none other I've ever experienced. Porch life is one of the best things about the neighborhood. Take a scenic wander along the length of the neighborhood to the local pub for a tasty bite to eat and a craft beer and talk to residents as you go.

Getting around

Public transport is thin in the Motor City, but we are situated close to Grand River, which is a major trunk road into the city (about 1.5 miles to downtown). Several bus routes run along there into the heart of downtown. We highly recommend exploring the city by bike (Michigan weather permitting) and have a couple of bikes available for guests to use.

Other Things to Note

We have a self-contained studio apartment in the basement of our apartment that a good friend and local business owner stays in a few nights a week. While there is no lock between the two units, this space is "off-limits" to guests, as we keep the two spaces totally separate, sharing only laundry facilities.

  • Such a lovely spot! The location is great - short drive to everything we wanted to see in Detroit, quiet and surprisingly friendly. Sophie was nice to chat with as well, and had lots of good information about the area. And the apartment is secure, wonderfully designed, and cozy to boot.

  • Sophie was a really cool host and it was really nice to meet her. We had a very easy communication before our stay and the check in, check out was so easy. She gave us good spots to eat in or to visit and thanks to her, we really enjoyed the city. The apartment is really well renovated, comfy and perfectly clean. Sophie, thank you again for this experience!

  • Sophie and Chris were outstanding hosts! Both are very easy-going and flexible. Sophie is great with responding very quickly to inquiries. The house is absolutely beautiful and the neighborhood is in a great location.

  • This is an AMAZING loft, never would have guessed it was so beautiful inside. Partly because of Sophie and Chris' DIY renovations. So original and nice to look at. Sophie and Chris were so nice, and cooperative with my schedule and requests. Perfect hosts. I'd recommend and book again with them any time.

  • So, as a regular viewer of CNBC, i was always reminded by Jim Kramer to never trust anyone w/ 2 first names. ;). All (bad) jokes aside, I loved this place. It was GORGEOUS to start, extremely clean, bright, and I had a deep sleep at night, indicating complete comfort on my part. The bathroom was beautiful, and connected to the guest bdrm. The location was close enough to DT Detroit that I cabbed there, had the cabbie wait whilst i picked up the keys, and cabbed back DT - all for $13 #WINNING. Sophie was extremely accommodating of my schedule when arriving (cross border travel). The only thing I regretted was not being able to spend more time w/ both Sophie and Chris. I feel we would have had a great breakfast conversation. Either way, I would easily return to their lovely place were it available. Siskel & Ebert give it thumbs up!

  • Sophie and Chris are great. Very easygoing and interesting people who are fun to spend time with. Their place is gorgeous and the room and bed are first rate comfy. I would definitely stay with them again. Awesome people who gave me some great pointers on things to do in an awesome city.

  • We packed a lot into the two days we spent into Detroit, so we didn't see too much of Sophie and Chris, but when we did they were very helpful, friendly, and glad to offer advice. (I'm so glad you suggested the breakfast sandwich at Astro!) Detroit's a wonderful city, and this is a great home base from which to explore it; their place is safe, comfortable, and close to down-town. That it's also so beautiful is just a spectacular added bonus. I hope to return once the snow's gone!

  • Sophie and Chris were great! They were friendly and helpful, their pets Katra and Porter were sweet and their home was beautiful.

  • Sophie and Chris have a wonderful living space. Their location was great for exploring the city; we walked everywhere with no problems. They were clean and polite with wonderful pets who were also very friendly. They provided maps and a very helpful book that helped us plan our trip better too. We would definitely go back to Detroit!

About
I am a 33 year old from London, who somehow wound up living in Detroit. I am a psychologist by training and do psychiatric research at the University of Michigan. I was introduced to AirBnB a few years ago, so am an experienced guest, and I was convinced by my hosts on a trip to Hawaii a couple of years ago that it was time to do my part and turn host! I returned home and fortunately was able to convince Chris, my other half, that it was a good plan, so, here we are... We have renovated our home with lots of reclaimed materials and hand built features, and we are very proud of the result. We are also super keen to spread the word that Detroit is a fantastic place to live. We've been hosting on airbnb for around 2 years and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We have a spare room and are very happy to share our home with almost anyone who is interested in and enthusiastic about exploring Detroit! I also act as manager for my Mum's listing in London. She isn't online enough to be a responsive host, so I'm running the show for her with respect to bookings/inquiries etc. She has a beautiful flat in Central London that she uses only for work during the week. Its free most weekends and for the whole of the summer. Its really a fantastic place from which to explore London. So, please book away - I look forward to welcoming you into my home (Detroit) or corresponding my way to a smooth check in for you in London! Sophie
