This listing is for a private room with a full-sized bed, with direct access to a shared en-suite bathroom.
We live in Woodbridge, a historic, quiet and safe neighborhood of Detroit, located just west of Wayne State campus and Midtown, about 2 miles from Downtown. The apartment is minutes from all freeways, and 20 minutes from DTW international airport. There is ample street parking around the house.
Our apartment has two bedrooms (1.5 baths) and is in a converted turn-of-the-century brick building. It has tons of character with oak floors and exposed brick throughout, and is full of light. We completed a top-to-toe renovation in March 2014, so its a modern and luxurious conversion, but with lots of old charm. There is a big east facing deck and a shared backyard. In the link to the 'street view' you can see the building (red brick with yellow and green woodwork) with yard and garages to the back . The apartment is the first floor rear, with direct access to the backyard. We have a super friendly black lab, and a super cute cat here to welcome you on your return each day.
We live 10 minutes by foot from the neighborhood bar for local beers and eats, 15 minutes on foot to Midtown, and a short drive or bike ride Downtown to dozens of bars and restaurants, the stadiums, riverfront and Eastern Market.
We have made a map with suggestions about places to go and things to see, and have local maps and a copy of the latest guidebook to Detroit for guests to use. We are also very happy to chat and divulge all of Detroit's hidden gems to the inquisitive!
Please feel free to email with any questions.
The whole apartment may be available for rent with a bit of notice, so please email with any queries about that.

We provide all linens and towels. Guests are welcome to help themselves to tea, coffee and basic spices, and to use the kitchen to make simple meals should they wish to.
Interaction with Guests
As much or as little as feels right. Every guest is different. We are happy to chat and divulge information about local treats, or leave you in peace to explore the city at your own pace.
Woodbridge is one of Detroit's most vibrant, safe and stable neighborhoods. Full of tree-lined streets with turn-of-the-century houses it is beautiful and welcoming. Woodbridge has a weird and wonderful collection of inhabitants, many of whom share a great passion about the neighborhood, and city as a whole. There is a fantastic sense of community here - like none other I've ever experienced. Porch life is one of the best things about the neighborhood. Take a scenic wander along the length of the neighborhood to the local pub for a tasty bite to eat and talk to residents as you go.
Public transport is thin in the Motor City, but we are situated close to Grand River, which is a major trunk road into the city (about 1.5 miles to Downtown). Several bus routes run along there into the heart of the city.
The recent arrival of Uber has also revolutionized traveling in Detroit by taxi. Pretty much anywhere you'd likely want to visit is a $5 Uber ride away.
Detroit has large, flat, quiet roads, so its a perfect city to bike in. We highly recommend exploring Detroit by bike (Michigan weather permitting) and have a couple of bikes available for guests to use. We keep these bikes equipped with locks, lights, spare tires and helmets and ask for $10/bike/day or $40 per week as a contribution to their upkeep.
Other Things to Note
We have a self-contained studio apartment in our basement. There is a locked door between the two units, and this space is "off-limits" to guests, as we keep the two spaces totally separate, sharing only laundry facilities.
This is our home, so we ask only that people are respectful of it. Please keep shared spaces clean and tidy. We work full-time, and sometimes work from home, so loud late nights on week nights aren't great for us. House rules are limited to being friendly and relaxed, and tolerant of the dog wanting to play with you.
We had a wonderful time with Sophie and Chris! They were warm and considerate hosts and had a wealth of knowledge to share about Detroit. It was our first visit to their city and we had a very enjoyable time. So much to see and do and everyone we encountered was pleasant and happy to have us there. We would highly recommend Detroit and have nothing but good things to say about our hosts.
Wonderful. Sophie and Chris were very welcoming. Sophie was incredibly helpful with sharing her experiences of the city, how to get around, and recommending restaurants (and jazz bars when I asked). We texted a bit right before my arrival, and Sophie was very responsive with that and the booking process before that. When I got there, we also communicated well. Everything was very easygoing.
The bedroom was clean and functional and roomy for one, and the street was quiet at night (for sleeping). Having the half-bath to myself was very convenient, and using the master for showers worked great.
WiFi was smooth -- no problems. Their pets -- a dog and a cat -- were friendly, but for those with any pet issues, they seemed quite happy staying in the living room.
Sights like the DIA were about a 25-30 minute walk away, so it's not central, but still straightforward and a good, easy walk. The neighbourhood is residential, leafy. In bad weather or at night, Uber rides made things simple - most places I wanted to go to were $4-7 away.
I was only in the city for a day or two, and was out a lot. I didn't cross paths with my hosts much, but they were always ready to chat when I did see them, and I always felt like I could ask them anything. I'd definitely recommend this listing to my friends.
Fantastic experience staying at Sophie and Chris' place. I was moving around quite a bit during my stay and they did everything they could to accommodate check-in/out process around my schedule. Excellent info on nearby neighborhoods/food/venues. A labeled city map was waiting for me in the room. Definitely will try to rebook when I come back to the city.
We had a great time at Sophie's place! The place is well situated (pretty close to Corktown, which we ended up hanging out in quite a bit. A short drive or cheap Uber away.) and really comfortable. We appreciated the recommendations and loved being in their unique space.
Thank you for hosting us. Sophie and John were pretty cool. We did not had the chance to speak much because we were always gone visiting this beautiful city. Your house is nice, cozy and confortable. The dog and the cat were affectionate and cute. We might come back again :)

Sophie and Chris were great hosts! Very friendly and knowledgeable about the area. The apartment is great, and the pictures are an accurate representation of the space and condition of the apartment. The bedroom is comfortable and very quiet. The apartment is in an up-and-coming neighborhood, and is a quick bike ride to downtown/midtown/corktown. I highly recommend a stay with Sophie & Chris!
Sophie & Chris have a beautiful apartment and made everything so easy and lovely for our stay in Detroit. Their apartment is comfortable, easy to find, and close to plenty of great restaurants. Sophie sent a detailed email ahead of time with all the information we needed to get into the apartment, and provided a map with a welcome note and restaurant recommendations (we followed their advice on breakfast sandwiches and were not disappointed!). Plus it was lovely to come home to their cute 'guard' dog and sweet little cat!

About the Host, Sophie
I am a 33 year old from London, who somehow wound up living in Detroit. I am a psychologist by training and do psychiatric research at the University of Michigan.
I was introduced to AirBnB a few years ago, so am an experienced guest, and I was convinced by my hosts on a trip to Hawaii a couple of years ago that it was time to do my part and turn host! I returned home and fortunately was able to convince Chris, my other half, that it was a good plan, so, here we are...
We have renovated our home with lots of reclaimed materials and hand built features, and we are very proud of the result. We are also super keen to spread the word that Detroit is a fantastic place to live. We've been hosting on airbnb for around 2 years and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We have a spare room and are very happy to share our home with almost anyone who is interested in and enthusiastic about exploring Detroit!
I also act as manager for my Mum's listing in London. She isn't online enough to be a responsive host, so I'm running the show for her with respect to bookings/inquiries etc. She has a beautiful flat in Central London that she uses only for work during the week. Its free most weekends and for the whole of the summer. Its really a fantastic place from which to explore London.
So, please book away - I look forward to welcoming you into my home (Detroit) or corresponding my way to a smooth check in for you in London!
