There were 6 of us schedule to stay at Gary's during the St. Paddy's Day weekend. Overall, it was nice to have a place to stay during such a busy weekend. It's about a 15 minute walk to the light rail station.
The time staying at Gary's was very interesting. It's odd that the first picture you can see is of this beautiful kitchen, but upon arrival there is a rule that the kitchen is only for family, which defeats the purpose of AirBnB type of accomodations. Although we did cook (only quick eggs and nothing more) one day, it felt like they didn't want us to and they were giving special treatment for letting us do that. On the first day, there was a nice breakfast spread, but it wasn't fresh by the last day.
Also, one of the days, the hot water went out and when we tried to contact Gary he did not answer. When seeing him later, he said he was golfing and you can't be interrupted when golfing. And with the amount of money we spent, it felt like we were only they to make a good business situation at times.
Overall, if you want to stay in a place ONLY to drop your bags off and never be there except to sleep in comfortable beds...you and Gary will be a perfect fit. He doesn't want someone that will linger.
On a side note, nice neighborhood with a good river to go for a run in the morning! A taxi ride to the city center is between 15-25 euros!
We are very disappointed at the remarks made by Rebecca and her friends regarding the hospitality we offered.
It would seem that the areas where we went the extra mile were the areas that were most criticised on:
We welcomed them for an early check in ( ca 11.30 am ), and when they decided to remain in the house for most of the day, we postponed other arrangements we had for that afternoon.
We gave them a large breakfast, as it was a cold day, of home made breads / scones / jams along with a bowl of fresh fruit, bottles of mineral water, and chocolates ( we do not advertise any meals in our offering, however we do everything we can to make guests welcome ). They were most appreciative and surprised at getting fed.
A very detailed and interesting tourist information pack was given to each of the girls.
A similar breakfast set up each morning was given to them, resulting in none of the girls ever going out to get their own breakfast.
They spent 3 – 5 hours around the table having their breakfast …..what would have happened if we had not offered them their breakfasts which are not included in our AirBNB offering ?
The incident of shortage of hot water was due to one of her colleagues spending 1hour + in the shower, resulting in no more hot water available – however, Rebecca who appeared to be very knowledgeable about all of our photos on our entry in AIRBNB, did not use the electric shower, which has instant hot water ( that was in her friend’s ensuite room ) …………..not much we could about that.
Rebecca, tried to ring me from our private home phone – avoiding using her own mobile, a rather unusual step to take in anyone’s residence, resulting in the fact that I thought the call was from wife.
It would seem that Rebecca made herself so comfortable in our house, that she had no issues preparing her own cooked breakfast in our kitchen after 14.00 on the Sunday, while still in her pyjamas !
Finally all the girls were most appreciative when I offered to drive them to the local light rail station and bring their bags for them, when they were leaving.
Overall, not sure if Rebecca, a very seasoned traveller, could ever have been fully satisfied with our offering as she sought to extend it very much beyond that which we had promoted, even though we exceeded that.
Gearoid's place is fantastic on all measures. He and his wife are the perfect host that know very well how to make you feel at home. The house has a superb and relaxing location that still allows you to get into the city centre quickly (there's a tram line around the corner that takes you to Grafton street in 15 minutes).
Added, spending some evenings talking with Gearoid about the world of business will open your eyes. Use his passion and knowledge to your advantage!
