The Space

In a part of Sicily that is still undiscovered by mass tourism lies VILLA SALINARA, a peaceful retreat with complete privacy, a romantic getaway or solitary sanctuary.
This charming historic villa was built in the end of 1700, and is located on the coast, surrounded by sea, antique salt marshes, vineyards, and olive groves, at the edge of a Natural Preserve.

The villa consists of a central body "ANTICA RESIDENZA 120 sqm", and 4 additional independent houses (Le Spezie 30 sqm, Acqua Santa 35 sqm, Casa del Poeta 50 sqm and the Emporio dellUva “SUITE” 90 sqm) that you can find in our other property on airbnb website.

Through the vegetable garden, and orchard you have access to the houses. Each house has its own private kitchen, bathroom, and outdoor area. All the rooms exude a Mediterranean atmosphere, a journey through the sensations and colours of Sicily. The interior has been restored with local natural materials, and is furnished in traditional Sicilian country style, with items that show total respect for the history and background of things.

VILLA SALINARA is surrounded by nature and culture, and is a few steps from the sea. Time flows slowly, away from the increasing pace of the big cities. It is a place of indisputable charm, surrounded by thousands of colours from the salt pans at sunset, with rare pink flamingos that hover between the old windmills.

We are in the heart of Western Sicily, in a few kilometers you can reach Marsala (12 '), Trapani (30'), Erice (40 '), Mazara del Vallo (45'), Salemi (40 '), Segesta ( 40 '), Custonaci (50'), Selinunte (1 hour) Scopello (1h), Cave of Cusa (1h) and the historic boat to Mothia, only 10 ' by bike.
The white sandy beaches of Marsala (blue flag for many years).
Also the wonderful beach of San Vito lo Capo (45 ') with the Natural Preserve Lo Zingaro.
From the nearby port of Marsala in a few minutes you can reach the Egadi Islands, with Favignana (25 '), Levanzo (35') and the wild Marettimo (45 ').
A day in Sciacca and Agrigento with its magnificent Valley of Temples (100 ')

There are many typical eno-gastronomic products, the famous local wineries producing Marsala wine, Olive Oil “Nocellara of Belice”, the local sheep cheese, ricotta-filled cannoli from Dattilo, the popular cous cous with fish soup.
I invite you to take one of “Katia’s cooking classes”. I promise you'll laugh AND learn and eat some unforgettable food!

For those who love sports can enjoy sailing, windsurfing, kite surfing, horses and fishing.

Some of our first guests explained it best:
“An example of artistic and ethical recovery in Sicily on the edge of a nature reserve.”
“After we got up this morning, we went out with the bikes, we saw the sea, the vineyards and the windmills. So we decided this just might be the most beautiful place on earth”

Note: This property needs to be booked via airbnb “special offer”, so please do not send a “reservation request”. Please send a message instead, this will simplify the booking process.

**We also rent the whole VILLA EXCLUSIVELY Please ask us for special rates.**

  • We had a wonderfull stay in Villa Salinara, a nice old house in typical sicilian farmstyle. The house was clean and we had enough space inside and outside. Yumi and Adriano were very helpfull and really nice people. They gave us extra wood for the fireplace and give us some very interesting tips of where to go and what to see. So we discovered a lot in this area of Sicily, art, culture, history, nature, food and good times. We were here in April, and I can assure you, everything was green and I have never seen such an abundance of wild flowers everywhere, what a lovely sight!! It also gave us the opportunity of realizing that you can live with much less than at home; the "Less is More"- feeling. It was a succesfull stay in Marsala. Thank you Yumi.

  • We spent 10 days in the Villa Salinara ("Antica Residenza") in the end of September and wholeheartedly recommend this place! Yumi and Adriano welcomed us warmly and Adriano took the time to explain us everything about this part of Sicily, such as archeological sites, natural reserves, the most wonderful beaches and restaurants to try. He and his assistent Mangiu even carried us around the village to show us everything that could be necessary during our stay.

We must say, that already this part of Sicily is really worth visiting, but when it comes to the Villa Salinara, we were really, really amazed. Yumi and Adriano renovated and furnished this antique house with expertise and a wonderful attention for details. Each apartment has it's very own charme and it is very nice to go around and discover all those little details.

We found that a car was quite necessary in order to benefit from the nicest places around (Zingaro Park, the vivid town of Marsala, the greek temples of Selinunte or Segesta, etc.) and also to reach the really nice beaches (next to Vila Salinara, the sea is beautiful but not deep enough to swim).

All in all, this vacation was an anamazing experience that we warmly recommend to anybody who value a very special 'ambiente', wonderful nature, historic sites, good food and very open minded hosts. Thank you, Yumi, Adriano and Mangiu!

  • From the villa's lemon trees and vegetable garden to the nearby town of Marsala, with its fish market and nightly passagiata, staying at Salinara Yumi was a beautiful way to experience a slice of Sicilian life. We stayed in the Poet's House, a chic two floor apartment with plenty of privacy and charm. From Salinara, it was easy to explore Trapani, the Egadi Islands, Erice and some of the most historic Marsala wineries. I would recommend to anyone in search of an authentic, lowkey, sundrenched experience. Adriana and Yumi were very sweet and helpful, and made recommendations for restaurants, sights to see, beaches to visit and more. All in all, a lovely week for my husband and I!

  • We stayed at Villa Salinara last week (late June 2011). The location is beautiful, set in one of the best parts of Sicily. We have a 17 months old daughter and unfortunately, though the place was lovely and Yumi and Adriano welcomed us warmly and were very helpful, we had to cut our stay short. We were supposed to stay for the entire week, but after three days we decided to leave as this accomodation turned out not to be the best option for our daughter. In general I wouldn't recommed the place if you have a child under 2-3 year old... our daughter Mia is at that stage where she wanders around but she's still very clumsy. Steps, stairs, corners, uneven floor and a rustic outside, etc... we were constantly chasing her and it all made it very difficult for us to relax (though the villa would be the perfect place to unwind!)... put it this way, the accomodation isn't child-friendly if you have a little walker to look out for. Moreover not having a beach nearby made it all more difficult. The sea is just a short 5 min bike ride from the villa, but there's no beach, just rocks and a couple of piers that get very crowded and with a small child loving to play on the sand we found it very difficult to entertain her. If it was just us, we would have stayed and certainly enjoyed our holiday at the villa, but unfortunately we had to move on to a more child friendly location and accomodation, otherwise we would have had no holiday at all!

  • Our stay at the Villa Salinara was a total delight. With the aid of Ariano and Yumi, our hosts, we discover a world that far surpasses our expectations. We now consider these two young people part of our family. They shared their resources and knowledge with us that proved to be most helpful and informative. We

Their observations expressed in our evaluation by Yumi and Adriano was right on the money! All of the members of the Spina family who were fortunate enough to meet the hosts during our stay, share the same enthusiasm and look forward to returning to Sicily. Yumi was called upon to assist us with the return of a costly item which was left behind after our departure. The process was swift and the item was received at our doorstep within a few days. We cannot thank her enough for her assistance. Tanti baci ( many kisses ) Ariano and Yumi and their darling son. Molto buono fortuna a tutti e due, (good fortune to you both).

  • We chose to go to Sicily and Marsala because we fell in love with Villa Salinara on airbnb and it was just as we had hoped. Welcoming, light and airy, large spaces, comfortable, beautifully arranged and wonderfully renovated. One can tell that the owners have a passion for beauty and attention to detail.

We spent a wonderful six days at Villa Salinara in September, exploring the surrounding countryside, coast and island hopping. Yumi and Adriano are wonderful hosts, they took their time helping us with settling in, finding our way around and sharing the local knowledge with us. The Canoli Siciliani from Bar Euro are more than I ever imagined!
Villa Salinara is a welcome haven to return to and lovely to just hang out in.
The Villa is set in quiet surroundings, with wonderful neighbours, close to a small village and the port to Mozia, only a short bicycle ride away. There you can sit in the sun and appreciate a great coffee and smiles from the locals. We enjoyed our time in Sicily very much and look forward to returning sometime, the atmosphere as well as the people are very warm and welcoming. We were actually sad to leave.

Thank you from Renato and Debra.

  • Yumi and Adriano were wonderful hosts. We stayed at both of their residences, one in the centre of Marsala and one near the coast of Mozia. The Marsala apartment is spacious and decorated in an authentic but individual style. Air conditioning in the bedroom saved us from the Sicilian heat of July. Most important for me and my husband was the location (right in the thick of things) and the feeling that we were living amongst the locals of Marsala. The apartment is set around a small courtyard with friendly neighbors and Yumi and Adriano were really helpful in pointing out the best places to eat and buy food (we met Yumi on the second day to show us the markets) and where all the locally interesting things to do are. We took them up on the offer of a pickup from Trapani Birgi airport, which is the same price of a taxi, but with the added bonus of the scenic route and Adriano pointing out and giving lots of local information. Better than the lonely planet guide!

In the Villa near to Mozia, we experienced a fantastic work in progress. Having purchased an old villa Yumi and Adriano are renovating it with super impressing results. We stayed in a beautiful apartment with an enormous living room, I almost had the feeling I was staying a modern castle. We bought eggs from the couple at the end of the road, road bicycles through vine and olive fields and languished in the extensive grounds of the villa. Yumi and Adriano were at the villa during our stay but we had enough privacy not to feel crowded and they were a fantastic asset of information and conversation.

Thank you Yumi and Adriano! We hope to see you in either Sicily or The Netherlands!

Art between Italy and Japan
I'm Japanese. I have lived all my life in Tokyo, then one day I decided to go and live in Italy. The first time I was in Sicily I fell in love at first sight of this wonderful land... I believe in what Goethe saying. "You have to come here, to Sicily, in order to understand Italy." My husband is Italian and we have 2 beautiful children. My villa is held with love and Japanese precision, decorated with an authentic Italian/Sicilian style. The villa was supposed to be used only by our family and friends, but one of those friends told us about Airbnb. We went to check it out, and we have decided to try it. When free, we are opening up the apartment for short rentals. We are doing this for the fun of it - we have always liked to host - and for the spirit of the site of getting people together, enjoying this kind of experiences that makes travelling so much more interesting. Thank you for reading my profile and hope to see you soon in Sicily! Yumi
