House - Private room · E 5th Ave, Vancouver, BC V5M 1N1, Canada

The Space

Furnished room in the 3-bedroom suite (700 sq ft, private entrance) of our character home in East Vancouver is available for rent. The BLUE ROOM is 130 square feet, furnished with a double futon, a lounge chair that folds down into a single bed, a table and a dresser. The PerchB common area includes a full kitchen (gas stove, fridge, dining table), bathroom with a tub and sit-down shower, a studio couch and a sauna. Laundry (washer but no dryer), city-wide wifi (but no TV), and free street parking all included. Luggage storage and bicycle rental may be available - inquire if interested.

The PerchB is easy walking distance to Broadway busses (5 minutes), Nanaimo busses to downtown (5 minutes) and two skytrain lines (Expo 10 minutes, Millenium 7 minutes - the Millenium line is the fastest way to get to SFU from the city); we are only a 5 minute drive to highway #1. We are a 5 minute walk from TnT, the large Asian supermarket, and a pleasant 15 minute walk through tree-lined streets full of character homes to vibrant Commercial Drive (best neighbourhood in the city!). The Drive has excellent restaurants, nightlife, coffee shops, groceries, yoga studios, parks, and a community centre; the best part is the people who make it so. Come and discover!

We are a 10 minute walk to the main Bohemian and artist quarter, with all it's great restaurants, night life and more... Or walk 6 minutes the other way and find yourself in a Chinese bakery , Vietnamese restaurant, or Thai grocery store.

  • The appartment is nice and cosy. The location is really good (beautiful / nice area and near downtown). Greg was helpful with the airbnb problem. I thank him.
But the bed on the blue room is really not confortable for a long stay. Otherwise I recommend it.

  • My friend Heather and I shared a room for 6 nights. Our stay at the Blue Room was pleasant overall. Ella & Greg were kind enough to offer us a discounted rate in exchange for our band playing a house concert for them. They were kind and accommodating.
The location was perfect for what we needed.
Comments on the basement suite: Our room was clean and tidy when we arrived. The kitchen was well-equipped. The blue room had a closet, dresser, and table which we appreciated. The futon was too hard on my back, so we ended up buying an air mattress. The fold-out chairbed was broken, so we shared the air mattress for the week.
The roommates we shared the space with were very respectful and kind to us.
Only complaint: Not a good place to stay if you like sleeping in past 6am. Upstairs little Haven tended to be awake before 6am, running around above our heads. He's such a sweet kid, and we're morning people so it didn't bother us too much.

  • My stay at the PerchB was pretty good, but unspectacular. I needed an inexpensive place with a kitchen, and it fit the bill perfectly. The place is plain, but sufficient.

As the hosts told me when I arrived, it's an old house and not terribly quiet. I could hear the family upstairs, including the small child running, running, running, running. If you're a light sleeper this might be problematic for you.

A note on the bathroom: the description "a sit-down shower"is a little misleading. A more accurate description would be "a can't-stand-up shower for midgets and hobbits". I found it a little uncomfortable, a hassle. My 6'1" girlfriend would have hated it.

If you're looking for an inexpensive place in Vancouver with a kitchen, this will fit the bill nicely. But be aware of the potential discomforts of the noise and shower.

  • The family was really great. The house was clean and everything was readily available. Greg and Ella were really helpful to me giving that I was new to the city. The family's kid pretty much acted as my alarm clock, every morning at around 7. And if the heat wasn't on the room gets pretty cold.

  • I was very disappointed with this place.

The bedroom has no windows (and I don't mean it has very little windows, it literally has no windows). The bed it self is very uncomfortable.

The shower is not a sit down shower, it is a shower that you cannot stand up in (there is a difference). The bath (that you get into to take a shower) is to high up and the ceilin about it is to low for you to be able to stand up. There is also no plug, so taking a bath instead is not an option.

Quite a bit of the furniture is planks of wood propped up on things (so not actually furniture).

The external appearance of the house is also very poor. You will be able to spot it from a distance because of how over grown and poorly kept the garden is.

I was quite often woken up early in the morning by the landlords (that live in the house above) playing loud music.

I just got the general impression that the owners didn't want to have to spend any money having to try and make this accomodation pleasant for their guests. Also I felt that the owners didn't care at all about their guests.

Vancouver is a beautiful place to visit, but that doesn't mean that you have to stay in a place like this.

  • The Perch B was a small and nice room.
The shared kitchen and bathroom was clean.
The distance to downtown was not so long.

    July 2013
  • The room is quite nice, as is the shared kitchen and the communal space. The only drawbacks are the lack of windows in the room (which I personally missed a lot) and the sitting shower, but neither of these is insurmountable as Vancouver is such a great place I'm sure you'd want to spend most of your spare time and the daytime seeing the sights. Location cannot be beat, close walk to bus line and thus other major transportation links.

  • Greg was really nice and accommodating. Had problems booking the proper days for my stay and he was really helpful and efficient in resolving the issues.
Overall the place was good for the price. A little bit far from grocers and downtown, and a little dark (considering the lack of windows) but it was perfect for my budget and the big lights in the room made it easier to deal with. Definitely a nice guy and a good option for those seeking an affordable home base.

    May 2013
  • The place is very clean and comfortable, close to bus lines, and stores. really nice family. the the sit down shower is the only spot i would see.

    April 2013
  • Asthma triggered. Sunshine is scarce. Entrance faces defunct fridge. Spotted cobwebs on door frame. Cat was friendly; not bad.
