***IMPORTANT UPDATE - FORTUNATE TO STILL BE SAFE & ACCESSIBLE ***
It's a fascinating time to be in the Puna district. Kileaua volcano has been following continuously since 1989, mainly near, and bordering, the Hawaii Volcano National Park. As of June 27th, a new finger had developed. This is a ground flow only, and does not erupt into the air. It is heading towards the town of Pahoa. We are located about 3-4 miles laterally from the current flow. Our access to Hilo, and hwy 130 should not be affected. Our subdivision, Ainaloa, is most unlikely to have access cut off to it, as we are considered a very safe distance from the present day flow. The present lava flow is creating light to moderate smoke conditions, as the lava is creating very localized small brush fire burning. The conditions will vary based on materials burning and wind direction. Guests staying at our home have commented that they are still very satisfied with the air quality near our rental. Presently the town of Pahoa, and points beyond, are still accessible by regular roads / routes. In the advent that Hwy 130 is covered with Lava, near the town of Pahoa, they have created basic alternate roads, making the area beyond Pahoa still accessible, by a more circuitous route. We feel extremely FORTUNATE that our home is safe and still available to offer as a rental. ( As a side note; our home is a very solid structure, as we safely weathered a Category 1 Hurricane with no damage to our structure. ) The internet is a great resource for information about the June 27 Lava Flow, and we welcome any questions that you may have about our home and surrounding area. It is a dynamic time, with new earth being created daily! Come and enjoy our peaceful home, and explore and enjoy the East side of the Island. We look forward to your inquiries, and we appreciate the opportunity to be your host during your travels.
It's a great house. This is a clean and affordable place to stay.
We are conveniently located in the tropical district of Puna, on the Big Island of Hawaii. We are a logical gateway from which you can explore the strikingly beautiful, utterly raw, and uncrowded natural surroundings of East Hawaii. We are a 20 minute drive from the Hilo International Airport, a 5 minute drive from the town of Pahoa, a 20 minute drive to the sunny Kapoho beach parks, and an easy 40 minute drive from Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. Come relax, unwind, and fill your days with fascinating activities.
"Paradise Getaway" is located on a 1/4 acre lot, in Anialoa subdivision. Our house is surrounded by undeveloped lots on 3 sides, increasing your feeling of privacy. Our yard is tropical and ever developing. My husband David designed and built this house himself. Upon entering you will feel at home, with our comfortable and open floor plan. It has vaulted open beam ceilings, and plenty of large windows, allowing for tropical breezes to flow thru. Every room also has ceiling fans, it is easy to adjust the temperature based on air flow. We have a fully equipped kitchen with many cooking and dining conveniences, so relax and cook at home, or grill out on our charcoal grill. Our sleeping area has a new and comfortable queen sized bed. There is a large closet with room for luggage, and drawers to unpack for your stay. We also have a fold out futon where 2 additional people can sleep. Our bathroom is clean, spacious, and has a full sized bathtub / shower which is heated by solar hot water. Most houses in the Puna district rely on rain catchment systems for their water needs. We invested in a 10,000 gallon concrete rain catchment tank, complete with a state of the art UV filter. This ensures ample water supply, and a delicious and safe water source for all your drinking, cooking, and bathing needs. When comparing vacation rentals in this area, keep these quality eco-friendly features in mind. To help you get out and enjoy we provide the following: beach towels, sand mats, basic snorkel gear, boogies board, small ice chest / cooler, kids sand toys, and flash lights for your night time lava viewing. Don't forget, we have on-site laundry! A FRIENDLY NOTE: Our house is on a quiet street, and we request no loud parties. We have a strict NO SMOKING / NO PET POLICY for the comfort of all future guests. THANKS
People are always courious what the weather may be like; it is dynamic! A "typical day" might be sunny and warm with some fast moving clouds and a short rain squal. It frequently rains at night and in the early morning, keeping it cool and comfortable for sleeping. The combination of sun, warmth, and rain, is what makes it look so tropical, and beautiful! It is helpful to pack a long sleeve shirt / pants, closed toe walking shoes for the lava, and a light rain coat. The following are all within an easy days drive: Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, Hwy 130/Kalapana -previous lava flows, snorkeling at tide pools, soaking at warm ponds, surfing /swimming, farmers markets,Lava Trees, tropical gardens, zoo, downtown Pahoa and Hilo (restaurants/museums/shopping)
You get the whole house to yourself!!!

YOUR CODE FOR THE LOCK BOX WILL BE SENT IN A SEPERATE E-MAIL TO YOU.
As you walk up the stairs to our home, there are light switches located at both the top and bottom of both sets of stairs.

Wow! Paradise indeed! What a beautiful house. Remember the bit in This Is Spinal Tap where the amp went up to 11. Well if I was scoring this house out of 10 then I'd need to go up to 11 too.
The house is beautiful. It had absolutely everything we needed (and more). Really beautifully decorated and very comfortable, we felt right at home.
No air-con but this is on the cooler, wetter side of the island and not needed, the room fans were more than enough and it was wonderfully cool in the evenings. The water is filtered rain water, solar heated for the shower. So the shower wasn't scalding hot but a sensible comfortable temperature and that wonderfully soft rain water means you are going to be economical on the shower gel!
It's in an area carved out of o'hia tree rain forest and you get the impression of being in the middle of the forest particularly on a wet evening when the birds and frogs chorus. The effect isn't spoiled by traffic either, I think we only saw a handful of cars pass during our entire stay.
Kirsten is a great host, amazingly superb communication throughout the entire process, and unbeknown to us conspired with my daughters to provide a wonderful gift parcel, waiting for us on arrival. That was in addition to Kirsten's own fruit and flowers.
If you are looking to visit Big Island and want something different to the usual Kona tourist experience, this accommodation, half way between Hilo and Volcano is ideal. And don't miss the Sunday Farmers Market just up the road!
Sehr empfehlenswert! ENGLISH Our experience here was similar to the travelers before us - this cute home is nicely furnished with everything you might need. the shower is good, Bed and futon are comfy.
And you are only about 30-40 minutes from the most important sights on this side of Big Island. Recommended! Thank you for great communication.
My husband and I really enjoyed staying at this little get-away. The place was very clean, the kitchen was well-equipped for cooking, and the neighborhood was quiet and safe. I loved hearing the birds and frogs in the yard every day. I recommend the Sunday farmer's market nearby, we had a great time there and got supplies to make a delicious dinner. It was also nice to have a place with a TV, DVD's, and board games; it really made us feel at home. Highly recommend!
It's amazing to have a whole house to yourself on Hawaii, and Pahoa is a great place for that house to be. Kirsten's place is well appointed -- it has so many thoughtful touches, like DVDs after a long day out, all the appliances to cook a nice meal at home, and even board games in the closet. Pahoa isn't too far away, so you can go to town, and Hilo is close by, too. It doesn't take long to get to Volcanoes National Park -- basically a great location. The place is a pleasure -- thank you, Kirsten!
About the Host, Kirsten
My family lives in Alaska. I am a stay at home mom. I grow a big ,organic garden for my family. We choose Hawaii as a place to visit yearly, and enjoy our trip to keep our place looking wonderful.
This home, built by my husband, David, was built off the ground with open beam construction, to enjoy the cool breezes that Hawaii has to offer. Powered with hot water solar, we hope to eventually go to solar electric.
I hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
