The Space

It's a great house. This is a clean and affordable place to stay.

We are conveniently located in the tropical district of Puna, on the Big Island of Hawaii. We are a logical gateway from which you can explore the strikingly beautiful, utterly raw, and uncrowded natural surroundings of East Hawaii. We are a 20 minute drive from the Hilo International Airport, a 5 minute drive from the town of Pahoa, a 20 minute drive to the sunny Kapoho beach parks, and an easy 40 minute drive from Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. Come relax, unwind, and fill your days with fascinating activities.

"Paradise Getaway" is located on a 1/4 acre lot, in Anialoa subdivision. Our house is surrounded by undeveloped lots on 3 sides, increasing your feeling of privacy. Our yard is tropical and ever developing. My husband David designed and built this house himself. Upon entering you will feel at home, with our comfortable and open floor plan. It has vaulted open beam ceilings, and plenty of large windows, allowing for tropical breezes to flow thru. Every room also has ceiling fans, it is easy to adjust the temperature based on air flow. We have a fully equipped kitchen with many cooking and dining conveniences, so relax and cook at home, or grill out on our charcoal grill. Our sleeping area has a new and comfortable queen sized bed. There is a large closet with room for luggage, and drawers to unpack for your stay. We also have a fold out futon where 2 additional people can sleep. Our bathroom is clean, spacious, and has a full sized bathtub / shower which is heated by solar hot water. Most houses in the Puna district rely on rain catchment systems for their water needs. We invested in a 10,000 gallon concrete rain catchment tank, complete with a state of the art UV filter. This ensures ample water supply, and a delicious and safe water source for all your drinking, cooking, and bathing needs. When comparing vacation rentals in this area, keep these quality eco-friendly features in mind. To help you get out and enjoy we provide the following: beach towels, sand mats, basic snorkel gear, boogies board, small ice chest / cooler, kids sand toys, and flash lights for your night time lava viewing. Don't forget, we have on-site laundry! A FRIENDLY NOTE: Our house is on a quiet street, and we request no loud parties. We have a strict NO SMOKING / NO PET POLICY for the comfort of all future guests. THANKS

People are always courious what the weather may be like; it is dynamic! A "typical day" might be sunny and warm with some fast moving clouds and a short rain squal. It frequently rains at night and in the early morning, keeping it cool and comfortable for sleeping. The combination of sun, warmth, and rain, is what makes it look so tropical, and beautiful! It is helpful to pack a long sleeve shirt / pants, closed toe walking shoes for the lava, and a light rain coat. The following are all within an easy days drive: Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, Hwy 130/Kalapana -previous lava flows, snorkeling at tide pools, soaking at warm ponds, surfing /swimming, farmers markets,Lava Trees, tropical gardens, zoo, downtown Pahoa and Hilo (restaurants/museums/shopping)

  • We cannot thank Kirsten and her family enough for hosting us on our honeymoon. Their home was absolutely perfect for us! We spent our days adventuring all over the big island and we were always excited to arrive back at Kirsten's paradise getaway to spend our evenings relaxing. Their home has everything you need and she generously offers the use of their beach and snorkel gear to her guests. The home was clean and ready upon our arrival and we were greeted with a bowl of fresh fruit, which was delicious! Do not underestimate the convenience and importance of their safe drinking water. If you are on the fence about staying here or elsewhere, do yourself a favor and factor that into the decision. We always had plenty of hot water for showers and dishes and had experienced no negative issues at all!! My wife and I highly recommend a visit to Kirsten's paradise getaway if you enjoy relaxing in a quiet secluded area and still being just a short drive away from all the beauty and adventure that the big island has to offer! Perfect home, perfect location and absolutely wonderful hosts!

  • Kirsten's house was a welcome and welcoming place for me to stay at in the beautiful Puna area.
It was clean, spacious and very quiet,as it is situated in a very quiet and safe neighborhood, just a few minutes north of Pahoa and close to Hilo,as well as the Volcano.
I appreciated the fresh flowers on the table ,fruit and coffee all there to welcome me.
I absolutely loved knowing that all their water is harvested rainwater!!!
All descriptions were very clear and exactly the way she describes them and all previous conversations were prompt.
I would definitely stay there again!

  • This house is everything one can ask for when traveling: It's a Home away from Home. Situated in a very quiet neighborhood, it's already a friendly and welcoming place from the outside - and inside, it's very cosy, nicely decorated, very clean and very spacious for one or even two people. Kirsten prepared everything perfectly for my stay and got back to me with all the questions I had immediately. She also sent a quick note on the day before I left to say Thanks and Goodbye.

The location is ideal for exploring Pahoa, making short excursions and going on day trips - before you start, get your smoothie or coffee at the Tin Shack Bakery, it's only a few minutes drive. There are some restaurants in Pahoa, there's good grocery shopping in the area and: don't miss the Maku’u Farmer’s Market on Sundays.

I can definitely recommend Kirsten's house and would love to become a regular at this place - if my home wasn't thousands of miles away from The Big Island.

  • Kirsten's place is a great base if you want to visit the Hilo area of the Big Island. The place is located in a very peaceful neighbourhood (often the only sounds around are the sounds of nature in the garden!) but is only around 20-30 minutes from downtown Hilo and around 40 minutes from the Volcanoes National Park. The place is very spacious and the kitchen has all you need if you don't want to eat out while the washer and dryer are very useful if you're travelling or staying for an extended period of time.

I didn't get the chance to meet Kirsten but she was always helpful and prompt with communication. Would definitely stay again and recommend anyone else visiting the area.

  • Kristen's place was really nice and clean and well situated on the Big Island. A good place to stay if you plan to visit Volcanoes National Park, Hilo or the eastern side of the island. The washer/dryer was also much appreciated. Kristen was also very accommodating with our departure time, allowing us to take advantage of the little time we had on the Big Island. That was much appreciated. Also, a bowl of fruit was waiting for us which was a very nice touch.

  • We had a wonderful stay at Kirsten's place. The place was fully stocked for everything we needed. Particularly the kitchen was very nice and we enjoyed eating on the deck after a long day of exploring the island. The neighborhood is quiet and a nice place to relax after a long day. We never met Kirsten but there were no issues and there were clear instructions throughout her house. We highly recommend this place for exploring the Hilo side of the island.

  • Kirsten house is a perfect place to stay while exploring the Volcano National Park and the Hilo area. It was great size for my family of three, very clean, cozy and peaceful. Kristen was prompt to respond to any questions. The house is equipped with everything you need for your vacation, from beach towels, coolers to the maps and guides. We enjoyed reading all the publications about volcanoes.
Thanks for such a comfortable stay!

  • I never had the chance to meet Kirsten, but she was so friendly via online communication. My boyfriend and I spent 3 nights at Kirsten's amazing home and we were not disappointed. The pictures are accurate and we were blown away by the cleanliness, peacefulness, and relaxing vibe of the home. We moved onto our second airbnb home for the remainder of our stay at the big island (since we were heading over to Kona), but we could not stop thinking about how wonderful Kirsten's Hilo home was. I would definitely recommend her home to anyone visiting the Hilo side and we're positive that if we ever go back, we'll be hoping to stay here again!!

  • Immaculate!

Kirsten's beautiful home was spotless and had fantastic amenities. This private oasis was quiet and the large deck overlooking the lush backyard provided endless hours of lounging.

The location was perfectly positioned as it secluded, yet provided easy access to Pahoa, the Kapoho tide pools and Hilo.

Hello- My family lives in Alaska. I am a stay at home mom. I grow a big ,organic garden for my family. We choose Hawaii as a place to visit yearly, and enjoy our trip to keep our place looking wonderful. This home, built by my husband, David, was built off the ground with open beam construction, to enjoy the cool breezes that Hawaii has to offer. Powered with hot water solar, we hope to eventually go to solar electric. I hope you enjoy it as much as we do. Kirsten, David, and Pacific
