The Space

It's a great house. This is a clean and affordable place to stay.

We are conveniently located in the tropical district of Puna, on the Big Island of Hawaii. We are a logical gateway from which you can explore the strikingly beautiful, utterly raw, and uncrowded natural surroundings of East Hawaii. We are a 20 minute drive from the Hilo International Airport, a 5 minute drive from the town of Pahoa, a 20 minute drive to the sunny Kapoho beach parks, and an easy 40 minute drive from Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. Come relax, unwind, and fill your days with fascinating activities.

"Paradise Getaway" is located on a 1/4 acre lot, in Anialoa subdivision. Our house is surrounded by undeveloped lots on 3 sides, increasing your feeling of privacy. Our yard is tropical and ever developing. My husband David designed and built this house himself. Upon entering you will feel at home, with our comfortable and open floor plan. It has vaulted open beam ceilings, and plenty of large windows, allowing for tropical breezes to flow thru. Every room also has ceiling fans, it is easy to adjust the temperature based on air flow. We have a fully equipped kitchen with many cooking and dining conveniences, so relax and cook at home, or grill out on our charcoal grill. Our sleeping area has a new and comfortable queen sized bed. There is a large closet with room for luggage, and drawers to unpack for your stay. We also have a fold out futon where 2 additional people can sleep. Our bathroom is clean, spacious, and has a full sized bathtub / shower which is heated by solar hot water. Most houses in the Puna district rely on rain catchment systems for their water needs. We invested in a 10,000 gallon concrete rain catchment tank, complete with a state of the art UV filter. This ensures ample water supply, and a delicious and safe water source for all your drinking, cooking, and bathing needs. When comparing vacation rentals in this area, keep these quality eco-friendly features in mind. To help you get out and enjoy we provide the following: beach towels, sand mats, basic snorkel gear, boogies board, small ice chest / cooler, kids sand toys, and flash lights for your night time lava viewing. Don't forget, we have on-site laundry! A FRIENDLY NOTE: Our house is on a quiet street, and we request no loud parties. We have a strict NO SMOKING / NO PET POLICY for the comfort of all future guests. THANKS

People are always courious what the weather may be like; it is dynamic! A "typical day" might be sunny and warm with some fast moving clouds and a short rain squal. It frequently rains at night and in the early morning, keeping it cool and comfortable for sleeping. The combination of sun, warmth, and rain, is what makes it look so tropical, and beautiful! It is helpful to pack a long sleeve shirt / pants, closed toe walking shoes for the lava, and a light rain coat. The following are all within an easy days drive: Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, Hwy 130/Kalapana -previous lava flows, snorkeling at tide pools, soaking at warm ponds, surfing /swimming, farmers markets,Lava Trees, tropical gardens, zoo, downtown Pahoa and Hilo (restaurants/museums/shopping)

  • We had a wonderful stay at Kirsten's place. The place was fully stocked for everything we needed. Particularly the kitchen was very nice and we enjoyed eating on the deck after a long day of exploring the island. The neighborhood is quiet and a nice place to relax after a long day. We never met Kirsten but there were no issues and there were clear instructions throughout her house. We highly recommend this place for exploring the Hilo side of the island.

  • Kirsten house is a perfect place to stay while exploring the Volcano National Park and the Hilo area. It was great size for my family of three, very clean, cozy and peaceful. Kristen was prompt to respond to any questions. The house is equipped with everything you need for your vacation, from beach towels, coolers to the maps and guides. We enjoyed reading all the publications about volcanoes.
Thanks for such a comfortable stay!

  • I never had the chance to meet Kirsten, but she was so friendly via online communication. My boyfriend and I spent 3 nights at Kirsten's amazing home and we were not disappointed. The pictures are accurate and we were blown away by the cleanliness, peacefulness, and relaxing vibe of the home. We moved onto our second airbnb home for the remainder of our stay at the big island (since we were heading over to Kona), but we could not stop thinking about how wonderful Kirsten's Hilo home was. I would definitely recommend her home to anyone visiting the Hilo side and we're positive that if we ever go back, we'll be hoping to stay here again!!

  • Immaculate!

Kirsten's beautiful home was spotless and had fantastic amenities. This private oasis was quiet and the large deck overlooking the lush backyard provided endless hours of lounging.

The location was perfectly positioned as it secluded, yet provided easy access to Pahoa, the Kapoho tide pools and Hilo.

  • Had a great experience renting from Kirsten. The place was neat and clean and had plenty of room for the two of us and the pull out futon worked great for our guest when he arrived partway through our stay Very comfortable place to stay.

  • Kirsten was an amazing host even from afar. We never actually met but everything went as planned and very smoothly. Kirsten was also very helpful in giving us tips to make our trip better. The listing and info was all accurate. We thoroughly enjoyed staying at the Paradise Getaway, would do it again, and recommend it to others!

Thanks for helping make our recent trip to Hawaii so enjoyable. We really liked your place. Thanks for the breakfast on arrival and for the fresh pineapple (the person overseeing the property, I assume, left it for us downstairs one day). Your tip for the discount Hawaii car rental was great and we ended up using it. With the free additional driver, it was the cheapest option. We also made use of the Big Island Revealed guide book that you had available at the house several times during our stay and enjoyed all the little extra comfort at the house. We made use of the little cooler and beach towels on one outing. The washer and dryer were convenient too. It was nice to come back and relax and watch a little TV in the evenings then wake up and have coffee and breakfast before venturing out for the day.

We loved Volcanoes National Park, went there two different days. We were celebrating our anniversary which turned into an engagement atop the volcano! We then had dinner at the Volcano House's Rim restaurant which was perfect. Besides that we liked "the strip" in Pahoa and tried out the Thai and Mexican restaurants there. I'd only been to Oahu before and liked the Big Island better. There was more beautiful natural surrounding to look at, it was less touristy, and I thought the food was better. I'm vegetarian and it was pretty easy to find good options for me.

We went zip-lining one day in Kapa’au and used Big Island Eco Adventures II. We'd definitely recommend them. Not only did it allow us to see a different part of the island by driving to Kapa'au but our tour guides were super cool and gracious. It was my first time and they were great at helping our tiny group of four feel safe and comfortable. I hadn't been on others for comparison but my partner was talking about having to brake and land yourself on other zip lines. This one was more hands free because the tour guides helped with each "landing."

I also went for my first ride in a helicopter. We did a volcano and waterfall helicopter tour using Blue Hawaiian helicopters. We also had a good experience with the people there.

We stayed seven days and did much more then I mentioned here. It was a good amount of time to stay for. Of course, it would've been nice to stay longer but thanks again for your hospitality!

  • I've never met Kirsten but she was a wonderful distance host.
We always communicate by email. When I had a question she was always there and answered as soon as possible.
Kirsten shared lots of tips and some good one.
Her cottage is spacious, very clean, ... It was awesome to live there.
    You've got everything you need.
Taking breakfast and dinner outside on the balcony was amazing, even waking up by the song of the cock in the morning was wonderful. In that way, I was awake for the day and can take advantage of the island from sunset to sunrise.
We enjoyed our trip in her wonderful place and recommand it.

  • A wonderful stay! Kirsten's home is located within a quiet neighbourhood, perfect for settling in, relaxing, and viewing the stars at night. The house is small, but perfect for 2-4 people. It was very well kept and clean. Kirsten was exceptionally communicative and provided clear and detailed instructions. We absolutely loved it there and would definitely stay with Kirsten again if given the chance!

Future renters would be advised to check the location of the house, as it is about 30min from the airport. The location is what makes it a quiet and private spot, however, and for us, was a perk.

Hello- My family lives in Alaska. I am a stay at home mom. I grow a big ,organic garden for my family. We choose Hawaii as a place to visit yearly, and enjoy our trip to keep our place looking wonderful. This home, built by my husband, David, was built off the ground with open beam construction, to enjoy the cool breezes that Hawaii has to offer. Powered with hot water solar, we hope to eventually go to solar electric. I hope you enjoy it as much as we do. Kirsten, David, and Pacific
