About this listing

One or two lovely rooms in historic Brooklyn brownstone available for the same group. Charming tree lined block and neighborhood of Prospect Heights, Brooklyn with convenient access to Manhattan (most subway lines near) and historic neighborhoods of Brooklyn.

The space

Beautiful private room on second floor of three story brownstone. A second single room next door can be rented by same party only. In double room, two huge shuttered windows look out on tree lined traditional Brooklyn brownstone neighborhood that is within the Prospect Heights Historic District. (means it was designated by law to preserve the 1900's architecture). Classic antique furnishings, very comfortable double bed with down comforter, (extra wool blankets), dresser, desk, and small table. If you would like to save some money for other pleasures, it is relatively easy to cook light meals. And no dishes to wash--simply put then in my little bin, and you will find them returned later in the day clean and ready for your next use.

The room has all tools to make meals, breakfasts, etc., including small fridge, microwave, toaster oven, hot plates, electric hot water kettle, french press, china, pans, etc. There are tea bags, and freshly ground coffee.
Use of two bathrooms with showers and tubs (which are shared with me ); one is on the floor below the room ( main floor). The other is in the upstairs hall near room (has deep claw foot tub) and is closed after I go to bed, usually around 11 or 12, until I get up, usually around 7-8. During that time guests use downstairs bath (one flight). Use of upstairs bath is available at all times for people with disabilities and for those over 65 or by special request.

A great advantage of this area over other Brooklyn neighborhoods is the extreme proximity to many subway lines, including the 2/3/Q/B,4,5, only 20 minutes by subway to Manhattan! The Q and B trains go over the Manhattan Bridge affording a stunning view of the New York skyline every time you ride. Brooklyn offers so much, but also all of Manhattan is very convenient--as convenient as many Manhattan neighborhoods, but just greener and more quiet.

Under 10 minute walk to huge beautiful Prospect Park, walk to many wonderful small shops, the beautiful main branch of the Brooklyn Library, the beloved Brooklyn Botanical Garden as well as the Brooklyn Museum. Also 10 minute walk to Park Slope, another well known pedestrian tree lined Brooklyn neighborhood. On our corner there is a classic New York deli with a bagel bakery on site and many other cafes and restaurants within a few minutes walk.

The room, which is accessed by staircase at the front door, is very private as my living space is a large (1600 square foot) duplex, and much of the time I am downstairs in back of my apartment, so guests come and go very independently.

My home is peaceful, "green" eco-conscious (no chemicals used in cleaning, no chemically perfumed products, and I prefer if guests use personal products without strong chemical fragrances), relaxed and warm, with a country-like feel, right in the city! (Sheets are all cotton, comforters are down, blankets are all wool.)

Starting winter(2015) we are adding a nice option for travelers: a charming single room perfect if you are traveling with a child or friend/relative, and don’t want to share the room. This allows a family to travel comfortably together. Perfect for kids, young or old. It has one single bed, with a mattress of non-polyurethane latex rubber, no outgassing (as is true in big room). As well, I have a porta crib for an infant or toddler. The wall in between is outfitted with soundproofing, so privacy should not be an issue. The single room is only available to renters of the double room. ((See second listing on this site for photo of single room)

Guest access

Guests enter through the front door and go up one flight to their bedroom. They can use either of 2 bathrooms, one on same floor as room and the other on entry floor. After I go to sleep, I ask guests to use the bathroom downstairs. That is usually between 11-12 at night and 7-8 in morning. (Exception is over 65 can use upstairs bath at night)

Interaction with guests

I respect privacy and leave guests generally to enjoy themselves, but I am always happy to chat if occasions arise when our paths cross. It is fun to meet so many people from all over the world and involved with many different things. I love repeat guests!

Other things to note

Traveling from Kennedy International (JFK)

Three AirTrain JFK lines stop at every terminal:
•All Terminals Train
•Howard Beach Line
•Jamaica Station Line (for LIRR option only)
Both the “All Terminals Train”, and the “Howard Beach Line” connect to subway lines at Howard Beach. The ‘All Terminals Train’ arrives approximately every ten minutes, taking about two minutes between stops.

From Howard Beach, you want to take the A train to Manhattan, to West 4th street station (in Manhattan).

Go downstairs (escalator in middle of platform) and take the Downtown/Brooklyn B train (not on weekends or after 9:30pm) to 7th Avenue, in Brooklyn. The house is less than three blocks.

For late nights and weekends, the next best from West 4th when the B is not running, is the Brooklyn bound D train (also from West 4th) to Atlantic Avenue/Barclays Center. Then follow signs to the 2/3 train and get off at Grand Army Plaza.

LIRR Option
Alternatively, from JFK, you can take the Jamaica Station AirTrain Line to Jamaica Station to connect to the LIRR (Long Island Rail Road). Take the LIRR to Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn (20 minutes). Once at Atlantic, you can take the subway trains 2/3 to Grand Army Plaza or Q train to 7th Ave.

Costs
Air train: $5.00/person
Subway: $2.75/person
LIRR: $10.00/person (cheaper off-peak)

AirTrain → Howard Beach (A train to Manhattan) → West 4th (B train to Brooklyn*) → 7th Ave ($7.75/person)

OR

AirTrain → Jamaica Station → LIRR → Atlantic Terminal (2/3 or Q) → Grand Army Plaza (or Q to 7th Ave) ($17.75/person)

*Late nights (after 9:30pm) and weekends take D train from West 4th to Atlantic Avenue/Barclays Center, transfer to 2/3 train to Grand Army Plaza.

Yellow cabs work on meters so you can try to get one whose driver knows how to take the “back way” to Brooklyn, via Atlantic Ave. to Eastern Parkway. Don’t let them take you on the “Belt Parkway” during rush hours, as traffic will drive the cost up. Should cost between $35-40 and it is customary to add 15-20% tip.

A good value for the price. Air conditioner added upon our arrival, but, if important to others, they should specify in advance.

Linda was kind and welcoming. The room was comfortable. We were close to the subway which was great and the local restaurants were excellent.

When booking our trip, it was important to find a rental with easy access to the city but one that would give us a different setting than Manhattan. A brownstone in Brooklyn was the perfect choice to explore new destinations while still having the ability to take in a Broadway show each evening. Linda was an accommodating host who allowed us to come and go as we chose. Upon arrival, she walked us through the space and gave us any information we would need to have a successful stay. She was happy to answer any questions we had and communicated very clearly. The room was spacious and was accurately reflected in the listing. There are 2 bathrooms, and the system she has implemented works perfectly. The room location allows for a private feel and is very quiet. Also, the in-room mini fridge was a much appreciated amenity. We recommend this option as a cost effective, comfortable way to enjoy the city and explore Brooklyn. Loved the setting and easy access to many attractions, restaurants, and subway lines.

Linda's place is a wonderful old brownstone in a quiet street and beautiful neighborhood. Vanderbildt Avenue with its cosy small restaurants is just around the corner. Linda was very friendly and helpful but we didn't meet Chantille at all. It was a bit confusing because we communicated with her prior to our stay but she didn't seem to live there. The house is historical and very beautiful. You can cook in the room but it's not very convenient and the kitchenware is quite old. Sweet Linda provided us with coffee and tea every morning. There are lots of maps and brochures in the room and Linda also gave us great tips of nearby places and transportation. Go to Tom's if you want a true and authentic American breakfast experience! That is really worth its price. Especially for those who want to stay in a quiet and cozy neighborhood with strong historical taste. Host is very helpful and delicate. Would be happy to stay here again!
