The Stanhope is located within walking distance of downtown cafes and restaurants. A superb YMCA with an olympic pool and raquetball courts is one block from our door and welcomes guests. A 12-mile walking and biking trail is located one street away.
Our home is located in a safe residential neighborhood adjacent to Beckley's downtown historic district and the new southern campus of West Virginia University. The region is world-renowned for outdoor adventure, and many state and national parks and adventure destinations are within a drive of 30 minutes of our doorstep.
Many specialty and national chain restaurants cluster around Beckley, though we've a few favorites we recommend. Guests in search of delivery might enjoy China Wok or Roma Pizza, two restaurants located less than a mile distant. If you're looking for a singular dining experience within a five- to ten-minute drive, we recommend Italian at gourmet dining at Dobra Zupas or the food court at the Tamarack arts center, which specializes in West Virginia cuisine. A drive of 30 minutes north of us, we recommend two award-winning eateries at Fayetteville -- Pies & Pints and Secret Sandwich Society. (Fayetteville is home to the New River Gorge Bridge, and a visit to the bridge overlook is a must for any visitor there.)
The largest concentration of retail shops in southern West Virginia is a drive of less five minutes north of us at the junction of U.S. 19 and W.Va. 16. Most large regional stores, such as Kroger, Walmart, and Kohl's, may be found there. The Crossroads Mall is located another five miles farther north along U.S. 19. Many guests who are searching for souvenirs recommend the Appalachian arts center, Tamarack, on I-77 off Harper Road, a 10-minute drive west of us.
-- Parks & Recreation
State and national parklands flank Beckley to the north, east, and south, and a drive of less than half an hour in all directions can see you on any of dozens of world-renowned hiking or biking trails of whitewater rafting and kayaking streams. We recommend searching for any of the following terms for useful information for parks and recreation: Little Beaver State Park, New River Gorge National River, ACE Adventure Resort, Adventures on the Gorge, Winterplace Ski Resort, Burning Rock All-Terrain Vehicle Park. Looking for a quick woodland walk instead of an adventure? Many guests enjoy walking the one-mile Ship Rock Trail, located adjacent to the YMCA Youth Sports Complex, a drive of about five minutes east of our property.
