About this listing
HISTORIC SCHOOLHOUSE STUDIO
Rich in history, this home was originally Saint Teresa's Mission in the late 1800's. It became part of the Mabel Dodge Luhan Estate in the 1930's. During that time influential guests, including Ansel Adams and D.H. Lawrence were inspired to create, cavort and exchange intellectual ideas at the many salons hosted here. Victor Higgins, member of the infamous Taos Society of Artists, housed his studio here. The home is presently a Registered Historic Landmark.
Bordered by sacred Taos Pueblo land, the views are vast and the light ever changing. Georgia O'Keefe was inspired to paint her famous cross series upon seeing the light play on the old morada which sits behind the house. This 1850’s schoolhouse where the Saint Teresa Mission nuns taught the children of Taos Pueblo has been completely restored with modern amenities and a reverence for it's history.

This cabin is fantastic and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend others stay here. I loved learning about the history of the surrounding estate and getting a view of Taos from the same place that many artists have. The amount of space is more than generous for two people, and all of the necessary comforts are there. The location is great for exploring Taos. We didn't find that the bathroom being detached was too much of a problem; the little wall heater in the bathroom kept it warm despite the cold temps outside. In all, we had a really great stay. Highly recommended.
A perfect place to experience old Taos. The school house had everything needed including a kitchen prep area that made our stay feel like home away from home. It was evident great care had been bestowed upon the building. We enjoyed the original artwork on display as well. Since the home looks out upon Taos Pueblo land and from the yard there is a wonderful view of the mountain. The property is adjacent to the Mabel Dodge Luhan compound and makes for a great photo op location. Would love to stay again. Thank you Jessica.
The schoolhouse studio is lovely - a really nice place to be. The location is great - a five minute walk from the plaza and etc, up at the end of a quiet lane, and the building and grounds are very pleasant. We had a great time. Thanks!
We had such a great time staying at the Schoolhouse Studio! You're only a 5 minute walk from downtown Taos, but it feels like you're in the country. So peaceful and beautiful. Although the house is split up into several rentals, it's still very private and you have your own patio. The studio has so much character and history. You really feel that you're having the most authentic Taos experience. I really recommend this place! We will defiantly be staying here next time we're in Taos.
My girlfriend and I brought our two dogs down to Taos for the weekend, and we could not be happier with our stay at the Schoolhouse. It had everything to make our stay fantastic: close to shops and restaurants, clean, spacious, great yard for the dogs, and a great ambiance. I would reccomend the Schoolhouse to anyone for any length of stay, we wish we had another week to stay and enjoy the town.
Loved our stay at the Schoolhouse. It's definitely a special and resonant place... Really enjoyed hanging out on the property, the hot tub soaks--super hot and great jets, and wandering across the way to the Mabel Dodge Luhan House to soak up the history.
Everyone we encountered was very nice and our key was ready for us under the mat when we arrived. The Schoolhouse itself is very comfortable. My 13 year old son and I were very comfortable, despite it only being one room.
