About This Listing
My home is in Modica, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
It's a traditional stone house built in the early 1900's. It's very light and has beautiful views of the historic city centre from the kitchen balcony and the large, sunny terrace. The guest room has independent access, it has a double bed and is cool in summer. In winter, we use a wood burning stove. The bathroom is shared as well the kitchen and the washing machine. There is Wi-Fi and you can find free street parking 20 meters from the front door. The house is in a quiet, residential area.
Modica is a baroque city, a maze of narrow streets, steps and churches. The city centre is five minutes walking distance (downhill) from my house, where the main Corso is lined with bars, restaurants and shops and from where the tour of Modica's famous sights begins.
The nearest towns are Ragusa Ibla (9 km) and Scicli (7km), both of architectural importance. The sea is 20 Km away.
There is a reliable bus service to Catania, Palermo, Siracusa and the local area as well as a local train service, which is slow but scenic.
Both the bus terminal and the train station can be reached on foot in 15 minutes.
I speak Italian, Spanish and a little English.
Other Things to Note
Aan was heel flexibel over de aankomsttijd, ze gaf ons een warm welkom en raadde ons een paar fantastische locaties aan welke in geen enkel toeristisch boekje te vinden zijn,
We were sorry not to meet Ana the evening we stayed (she was away selling ceramics at the Infiorata festival in Noto, which we were lucky enough also to visit) but her neighbor, who speaks French, was extremely helpful with suggestions for restaurants and everything had been perfectly arranged. It is a little complicated to find if you are driving, even with the Airbnb map and her very good instructions, since there are a lot of sharp turns. The bed was very comfortable and we found everything we needed. I loved checking out her original artistic decoration. We had breakfast on the terrace above and the view of Modica is out of this world! I hope to visit again to see more of the town.
Grazie Ana !
Staying with Ana was like staying with a friend we knew for some time already. Her house is very cosy and pleasant to be in. The view from the kitchen and spacious roof terrace is magnificent and the location could not be any better. Close to the center, yet a little bit up the hill and quiet. The room is very pretty and even has its own exit/entry. Thank you Ana for your hospitality, laughs and inspiration!
Oh, what an experience! I had twelve wonderful days enjoying Modica, Ana and her lovely place. It is one of those places you only think exist in movies. I feel so lucky to have been able to stay there with her, and it is her, Ana, I have to start with...
Ana is such a warm hearted person, a truly kind woman with such care and affection for life and people. She is easy going and sweet, very helpful and takes a real interest in people without ever being overwhelming or pushy. She deeply respected my privacy, but also introduced me to her friends and let me tag along with her on several occasions, which was great, as I was travelling by myself. Ana is a very interesting person, and we had many great talks, and I can honestly say I miss her good company.
Ana's place gives you that really authentic feel, with the balcony doors, a hillside view of the city and eclectic mediterranean decor. Her artistic sense really makes the place. The room was big and airy, with a nice private entrance which is very practical. The bed was very comfortable, and there is ample room for your clothes and stuff if you feel like unpacking, rather then living outta your suitcase. The bathroom is of good standard and the kitchen has all the essentials. One of my favourite things was sitting enjoying my morning coffee at the kitchen table, sun shining in through the balcony doors. I was there first two weeks of April, and the temperature was unusually low for that time of year, so if you're doing a spring-time visit, I would recommend bringing a warm knitted jacket etc. just in case, as it can get a bit nippy inside those old stone houses. Nothing the gas oven in the room and a sweater couldn't fix ;) The place is on the one hillside, and it takes exactly 5 minutes to walk down to the city's main street Corso Umberto, so it's in a very practical location.
Modica itself is such a picturesque little town, with so much to offer when it comes to food and culture. For a couple of restaurant tips, try Trattoria Basilico for lunch and La Contea for pizza, both right by the main street. I went to both places several times. The endless abundance of beautiful baroque architecture left me breathless, and I keept stopping saying "are you kidding me?", things were just so gorgeous. If you have a few days, take a trip to Scicli a lovely baroque town about 20 minutes from Modica, and get to Cava d'Ispica to see the grottos where people lived until as recently as the start of the 20th century (!). Also, the scenic nature is something to behold.
All in all an experience for life. I warmly recommend this place. And Ana, thank you for being your wonderful self and a terrific hostess.
