We are LGBTQ and straight friendly.
Our home is an urban micro-farm in the making and a land partner in Patchwork Urban Farms. We are an easy walk or bike to the River Arts District (less than 1/2 mile) and Downtown (less than a mile). You can bike to West Asheville (less than 2 miles) or UNCA (about 3 miles). We're also really close to Biltmore Village and the entrance to the Biltmore Estate (less than 2 miles).
Pet friendly for dogs with well-behaved humans (**see notes below re: dogs). We do ask that you be prepared to to take your dog with you when you go out. We also ask for a 10.00 per day pet/cleaning fee.
We love Asheville & love to help others love it too. We're happy to offer guidance and suggestions or to leave you to have your own experience. Check out our guidebook for this listing.
This room is not air-conditioned. It has a ceiling fan and an oscillating fan. It maintains a constant cool temp because it is in our finished (and mildew-free) basement on the northeast side of the house. People report that they sleep very comfortably.
Our place is simple and affordable but with the added bonus of a private bath and private entrance. You will be welcome and comfortable here.
(**A note for visitors with dogs: I love dogs. Absolutely love 'em. I don't provide a crate, however. And your dog cannot be on the bed. Yes, I will know. If your dog has never stayed in a crate before this won't be a good place to get him or her used to it. Try it at home first. I prefer you not leave your dog here while you're gone. They tend to feel stressed in a strange place, hearing strange noises. When you arrive there will likely be a moment of excitement when your dog meets our dog, Minnie. Expect barking and sniffing. It's a good idea to let your dog have a walk across the street after traveling and the excitement of meeting another dog in a new place. Asheville is a very dog-friendly town. Lot's of places with outdoor seating and a few that allow dogs inside. Thanks!)
You'll have your own private entrance and there is plenty of parking right out front. I usually greet guests but if for some reason I can't be at home when you need to check in, I'll leave the keys for you.
Interaction with Guests
You'll be pretty self-sufficient and welcome to make your self at home in your space. Text me if you need anything or just knock on the front door.
Both the laundry room and my housemate Grace's room are downstairs but these spaces are separate from the guest space.
The South-side neighborhood is on the south-west fringes of downtown so it's easy to get most anywhere in Asheville. I love the urban stream right across the street, the proximity to the river and how it's perfectly situated to be a leading area for urban sustainability and urban agriculture.
Walking around is safe and easy. Minnie and I walk all the time. I have maps on the wall that show the easiest routes.
I have to admit that public transportation is not amazing in Asheville. It exists and you can get around on it but it's nothing to brag about yet.
However, we are becoming a very bicycle-friendly town. Green ways are being developed in the the whole city and county for walking and biking.
I think the best deal for parking downtown is in the parking decks. City decks are usually free for the first hour then $1/hour after that. Sometimes special event parking raises the price. Parking is free in RAD and West Asheville.
Other Things to Note
I have a lovely housemate named Grace. Her room is also downstairs but in a different part of the house than this space. You might hear her go up and down the stairs or meet her in passing.
Please park on the street. There's a street light right at the mailbox. I've never had any problems with cars parked on the street though you should, of course, lock your car.
I don't provide breakfast but there is a coffee maker and fridge so you can feel at home. You can walk to coffee at Clingman Cafe in about 10 minutes. One of my favorite breakfast places is Over Easy on Broadway. Green Sage, also on Broadway, is great too.
There is a hair-dryer but you should bring your own toiletries.
If you bring your pet please be prepared to take him or her with you when you go out. And please don't let your pet on the bed in consideration of the guests who will come after you.
And, of course, no smoking in the house.
Thanks and I look forward to seeing you!
