This is the nice, spacious Muir Woods Room at Derby Creek Guesthouse, with sleeping space for 3 (queen bed, twin futon).
Proud to have been awarded Superhost status by Airbnb!
THE MUIR WOODS ROOM --- 14 1/2 ft x 12 1/2 ft (181 square feet) --- is one of 5 private bedrooms available for rent in my large Craftsman home. Click the +MORE link below for full info.
The Muir Woods Room is a large, nature-themed room with a comfortable queen-sized bed; a twin futon that can be set up as a chair, a bed, or a sofa; a desk and chair, a dresser for your clothes, end tables and lamps, a closet with hangers, your own iron and ironing board, and extra blankets for those cool nights. The room can sleep up to 3 people, such as a couple with a child (but not three single adults, since there's only two beds).
The Muir Woods Room pays homage to Muir Woods National Monument, established in 1908 when President Roosevelt signed legislation to protect the land.
Please note that my rooms are priced by season and number of people: cheapest in winter and for one person; higher for more than one person, in summertime, and for graduation & other special events.

Interaction with Guests
IMPORTANT: First-time guests need to set a 10-minute check-in appointment at least a week ahead. For everyone's peace of mind, I meet and greet my guests at check-in for your first booking (but don't mind arranging self check-ins for future stays). Unless arranged otherwise a week ahead, check-in time is 4 pm.
Last minute booking? Check with me first to make sure your check-in time will work. Arriving after 9 pm? If you don't mind a late-arrival fee, I don't mind staying up late.
At check-in, I'll show you where to find the things you'll need and the quirks of the house, deliver your keys, verify your ID, get a liability waiver signed, and answer your questions. I'm also happy to make restaurant, transportation, and sightseeing recommendations.
I'm available by phone, email, or text if you need anything during your stay or if you have any questions or problems.
When we all have time, I enjoy getting to know travelers who are sociable, but to respect your privacy, I will go about my own business unless you reach out.
The house is 1/2 mile south of University of California, Berkeley in San Francisco's East Bay (just across the Bay Bridge from San Francisco proper), in the highly coveted Elmwood neighborhood. This is a beautiful, walkable, safe, and quiet residential area. It's superbly located just a few hundred feet from the popular Telegraph Ave and College Ave shops and restaurants and just a mile from downtown Berkeley. Public transportation, shops and restaurants, a coin operated laundry, banks, a post office, and Zipcars are abundant nearby. San Francisco is just 10 miles away and easily accessible by BART train or by car.
BUS STOP: An AC Transit bus stop is just one block away, at Derby & Benvenue, with Bus 51 B getting you to campus in 5 minutes and to the Downtown Berkeley BART station in 10 mins.
BART: Two BART stations are exactly one mile away - Ashby BART and Downtown Berkeley BART. A third BART station (with plentiful parking) is 2.5 miles away: Rockridge BART.
CAR: You'll find an Enterprise Rent-a-Car just a few blocks away. You can also easily get rides from Uber or Lyft most anywhere in the Bay Area.
FREEWAYS: It's an easy jaunt from here to I-80/I-580, via California 13 (Ashby Ave). Ashby Ave intersects with our street just 4 blocks south.
PARKING is limited and regulated, so avoid bringing a car if you can. If you must bring a car, you can park on the street in my neighborhood overnight and for up to two hours during the day (8 am - 7 pm) without a permit. If you wish to park your car all day, you have three options: 1) park it at the nearest BART station for around $2/day; 2) park it in a nearby public parking garage for around $15-20/day; or purchase a street parking permit from me for $10/'day (as available, by advance request, supplies are limited). I'm not responsible for securing or managing your parking or for guest's parking tickets. If your plan is to park your car all day, you will be much better off without one in Berkeley, since public transit is convenient, taxis are easy to find, Zipcars, Lyft cars, and Ubers are plentiful, and parking is expensive and hard to find.
Other Things to Note
After you book, Airbnb will email you a booking confirmation. In addition to the address, directions, house rules, and wi-fi passcode, it contains a link to our House Manual, which tells you where to find things and other important info.
PLEASE PRINT THIS CONFIRMATION and bring it with you so you can easily find the address, directions, wi-fi passcode, and our contact information in case you can't access the Airbnb website while you're traveling. You'll need it to review the house rules, which we do expect our guests to know and observe.
CLEAN AND GREEN: We provide green living supports (recycling, composting, chemical-free bath products, etc.). Each person cleans up after themselves immediately after meals. Before you check-in, we have the entire house professionally cleaned, including laundering all of the linens, towels, pillows, and blankets. We also clean the common areas of the house at least twice weekly during your stay. For stays of more than a week, we will replace your linens and towels, and dust and vacuum your room weekly. Cleaning products are chemical-free and unscented (Seventh Generation and Dr. Bronners), so you'll smell only the fresh air. We ask you to preserve our indoor air quality and other guests' health & comfort by not bringing bleach or other toxic products into the home and by storing perfumes only inside the bathroom drawers (not inside guest rooms).
LAUNDRY: We don't have on site laundry facilities for guests, but there's a coin operated laundry just 200 feet from the house (a 1 minute walk), and we provide laundry bags, eco-friendly laundry soap, and a wheeled basket to get you there easily.
PETS. The house is pet-free (for the sake of allergy-sufferers). But two cats live with me in my attached apartment (separate entrance, same building). They do not enter the house, but two allergy-sufferers have said they could detect their presence in the kitchen, near the door between my apartment and the main house. Other allergy sufferers (there have been many in my 5 years of hosting) did not detect them at all. I've recently installed an air filter on each side of the door and a barrier underneath the door (March 2015), and will post what feedback I get.
WHOLE HOUSE VACATION RENTAL: When the individual rooms are not already booked, you can rent the entire main house for your family reunion or other group getaway. Whole main house listing: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/662523
OPTIONAL SERVICES: Whether you're renting the house or individual rooms, we also offer (with 1 week advance notice and extra fee):
- laundry service
- daily maid service
- catering, picnics, and lunches to-go
- beach kit
- camping gear
- rides (for shopping, etc)
- bike rentals
- baby gear
The gear items were purchased for your convenience at considerable up front expense. Please don't be offended when we ask you to help cover the cost of providing, maintaining, and replacing them through a rental fee (averages 1/2 what you'd pay a gear rental company).
NOT A PARTY HOUSE: If your group is looking for a house where you can hold loud parties or stay up through the night, this is not the place for you. Night owls should stay elsewhere, since normal household sounds (doors closing, footsteps, shuffling around) travel easily in houses with wooden floors. I consider a good nights' sleep a sacred commitment to my guests and if you're disruptive at night, you'll be asked to leave.
The calendar is always up-to-date, so the step of asking if it's available and waiting for a reply isn't necessary. If the calendar shows dates as available, they are, and you can go ahead and book them.

I had an extended stay at Amy's house during my recent visit in Berkeley. I spent part of the time in the main house (muir woods room and rose garden room) and part of the time in the apartment. Both rooms and the apartment are lovely. The common area is also very clean and well equipped. Amy hires professional housekeepers to clean the house and rooms. I also loved the neighbourhood, quiet at night but also easy to get to downtown and the campus.
Amy takes very good care of her guests and is very considerate. I had a very pleasant stay at her place and will definitely come back when I visit Berkeley again.
We greatly enjoyed our stay at the guesthouse. After arriving promptly at the decided upon time, we were greeted by Amy, who was very welcoming and friendly. After a brief tour and introduction to the house, we were shown to our beautiful room. The Muir Woods room was spectacular and upon entering we felt immediately relaxed. The room was very clean and tidy, with many amenities for our use. The room was so comfortable and peaceful that we spent more time at the house than we'd planned. Breakfast provisions are organic and fresh and we enjoyed using the professionally outfitted kitchen. This house is within easy walking distance of UC Berkeley, the Greek Theatre, movie theaters, shopping and restaurants, while located on a quiet residential street. Look forward to returning. Thank you Amy!
Amy was a wonderful host for my mom, who had a lovely stay in the Muir Woods Rooms. Amy was incredibly considerate of all her guests, and my mom felt very welcome and comfortable in her room and in the house. The house itself is a beautifully maintained Berkeley craftsman and the location was perfect for our family.
We look forward to staying in Amy's B&B again!
Amy was perfect, patient with my late arrival and even gave me some advice on when I could expect to arrive given my landing time at SFO! The house was in great spot, just 20 minutes walk for the Berkely campus.
The room was clean, nicely sized and the kitchen was great - good selection of bits for breakfast and well kitted out for me to make my own dinner.
i'll be back!
Thanks, Chris! So glad you enjoyed the home, the location, and the kitchen & breakfast. I make it a point to keep the kitchen stocked with everything visitors need to cook a meal: cookware, cooking oils and vinegars, spices, condiments, and even a few exotic items like hot chili sauce and fresh Bay leaves. It's gratifying when someone makes full use of the kitchen. With campus 1/2 mile away on level ground, it's an easy 10 min walk at a quick pace and 15 mins at a casual pace. Chris's 20 min walk would have included stopping to smell the roses and sample the coffee at Sacks (both worthy endeavors). ;-) Glad you'll be back, Chris!
The room was very clean, comfortable and gorgeous! The house is beautiful and very conveniently located within walking distance to UCBerkeley and downtown. I had such a wonderful stay and many thanks to Amy who was so kind and welcoming!
If you want the authentic Berkeley experience, Amy's historic guesthouse is the place. Staying there was a great experience and Amy is great host. She is caring, considerate and provides a great service. Thanks again Amy!
Amy was a warm and welcoming host. The house was very clean, and looked just like the pictures. The breakfast provided was very convenient (and delicious)! The neighborhood was cute, and a great place to go running in the morning. I would highly recommend this listing.

I truly enjoy sharing my comfy, warm, and welcoming home with good people from all over the world. I host guests in my 5 BR/2 BA guesthouse and its attached studio apartment near UC Berkeley, and I manage a friend's 2 BR Airbnb in West Berkeley.
I'm a writer, advocacy professional, and a public relations consultant growing green and socially responsible businesses and nonprofits. Presently, I'm taking time out from my career to study psychology at UC.
In my advocacy career, I've directed campaigns to protect wild forests and coastal areas, co-founded the Green Party USA, worked on a presidential campaign, helped build socially responsible businesses, and raised millions for environmental and social justice causes.
In my downtime, I live a quiet, low-key, healthy lifestyle, and relish the simple pleasures: music, the great outdoors, learning, and friendship. I'm a bit of a foodie, enjoying foods from all over the world, especially healthy, organic foods. I also really dig science (all kinds, from microbes to galaxies), animals (wild and tame), motorcycle-riding, outdoor adventures, philosophy (my undergrad major), and psychology.
I enjoy sharing my friends and interests with travelers who look forward to interacting with the locals. If you stay in my place, or host me in yours, you'll find me warm, friendly and helpful. But I'm entirely unobtrusive to those who prefer their privacy.
Since I'm entrusting you with my home & things, I need to know about you before accepting a booking. What I need to know: full legal name, current address, and place of employment. Taking a moment to complete your profile with this information will speed things up.
Thanks, and see you soon!
