***3 day stay required for Labor Day weekend 2014***
You will never forget your stay in this luxuriously appointed, utterly charming and vintage "jewel box" of a house in the Zilker Park neighborhood. The charm of our Zilker Cottage is exceeded only by its perfect location. The 5 star reviews of the Enchanting Zilker Cottage confirms how fantastic it really is and at a great value!!
This is an original vintage (approximately 650 square feet) 1940's Zilker Cottage in the very BEST location within 1/2 mile from DOWNTOWN AUSTIN with a cozy bedroom, bathroom, living room, dining room, huge kitchen, and vine covered front porch. Street parking is available (for free) directly in front of the house about 25 feet from the front door. You can look forward to staying so close to downtown but in a safe, upscale, and cool Zilker residence. Best of both worlds.
The Enchanting Zilker Cottage (pictured above) is located in front and is completely private and all yours to enjoy! It has a covered front porch/seating area and a front yard area (not fenced) exclusively for you. There are 2 other residences on the property towards the south end of the property accessible through the side backyard gate entrance. The following are some details about your Enchanting Zilker Cottage...
Enjoy this private bedroom with it's original hard wood floors and gorgeous antique door knobs, flat screen TV including cable, WiFi internet, Sealy Posturepedic Sotherby PLUSH queen sized mattress, fluffy topper, GOOSE down comforter with 100% cotton duvet cover, Egyptian cotton linens, Egyptian cotton pillow cases, and sturdy/elegant Eddie Bauer bed frame. The room is small measuring 12 x 12 with the majority of space taken by the huge bed for sleeping comfort. Closet includes wind-up alarm clock, ironing board, iron, plenty of room to hang clothes, many shelves for storing belongings, and two huge maps of Austin. The bathroom has hard wood floors, a full bathtub/shower (if you're tall...not a problem...high ceiling), Bath and Body antibacterial hand soap, lotion, shower gel, Yardley soap, shower cap, and comfy all cotton towels also provided. (We recommend you bring beach towels for off site use). The sink and tub are both original to the house (cast iron) and restored. I did, however, replace the white surround tile around the bathtub...I couldn't salvage the old tile :( All bathroom appliances (faucets, toilet, etc) are new, as well.
The kitchen is gorgeous with an antique chandelier, gas stove, microwave, refrigerator, toaster oven, coffee maker, ceramic teapot, kettle, blender, pots/pans, FILTERED water system, and tons of dishes in the event you would like to cook and dine in. On occasion, you can see my chickens drinking water from the bird bath from your kitchen sink window (they live in the backyard on the far south side of the property).
Living room ~
I have a beautiful saddle leather sofa, huge coffee table, with lots of Austin and Texas themed books and magazines on hand to read, as well.
Dining room ~
There's a fantastic mango wood dining room table (bar height) which comfortably sits four people...this is also a great place to get comfortable with lap tops, read newspaper, etc. as there is plenty of table space. It's also ideal for a great meal with friends and family!
This house is in Zilker, a residential neighborhood in south-downtown Austin that adjoins Zilker Park, 351 acres on the Colorado River. Within the park is Barton Springs, a large, naturally fed swimming pool. The nearest commercial corridor, South Lamar Boulevard, is one block away, and has many restaurants, coffee shops, and music venues. About a mile away, there’s South Congress Avenue, a strip lined with restaurants, bars, vintage shops and stores like Allens Boots, which carries over 4,000 pairs of cowboy boots, along with hats and pearl-button shirts.
If you book a stay here (I can't emphasize this enough) please consider walking/running/biking this area as it offers incredible homes to admire, the famous Hike and Bike Trail on Town Lake, Zilker Park, Barton Springs Pool, Umlauf Sculpture Gardens, Botanical Gardens, restaurants galore (including the famous "Uchi" sushi restaurant 1 block down the street), Alamo Drafthouse, etc, etc, etc. This is a very cool and historical area of town and I encourage you to take advantage of this location. If you are bringing your bike(s), please feel free to leave them inside your house :)
Plentiful outside the house on the street. There is a private driveway that I use for a personal car only but we have unlimited street parking right in front of the house for your convenience (located about 20 feet directly in front of the front door/porch)
There is also public transportation with the nearest bus stop less than a block away on Lamar Boulevard/Treadwell Avenue in Austin, Texas 78704. The bus can take you to 6th Street (downtown), the Warehouse district (downtown), the 22 acres of the Texas Capitol (downtown), the University of Texas campus; or the Austin Convention Center to name a few destinations. Cab fare is about $5 to downtown - it's only 1/4 mile away.

Such a great little cottage and the location was PERFECT for what I was looking for; close to bike trails, good restaurants nearby, and a cute little wine bar (House Wine) just down the hill. The neighborhood is gorgeous and very quiet with lots of charm. Already dying to go back!
I loved staying at this Zilker Cottage. The house is exactly as explained and is perfectly situated for all activities in Austin. The cottage had a cute rustic french flair to it but felt roomy. I enjoyed siting on the front porch in the mornings with a nice cup of coffee and doing so allowed me to meet a few friendly neighbors walking their dogs. As another guest mentioned, the living room is a little dark, but I didn't feel like this detracted from my stay. I honestly found no need to stay in the living room as their was plenty of space in the dinning room/ kitchen area. I think this listing would be perfect for visiting couples looking for a wkd away.
My wife and I went to Austin TX for our anniversary and stayed at this awesome cottage in Zilker. Everything we wanted to see was easily reached by foot, bike, or bus. We found ourselves walking most of the time because the weather was mild. The cottage was very welcoming. Everything was as described and Sovay was an excellent host. She helped us find a Catholic Church nearby and she gave us a ton of tips to make the most of our trip. A+ experience.
Sovay was very professional and provided a lot of helpful information about the surrounding area before we arrived. The BBQ food truck she recommends was wonderful! Finding the cottage and "checking in" was very easy. The kitchen was well-stocked and ready for anyone who would like to cook.
Though, overall, we were not very enchanted by the enchanting cottage. The pictures led us to believe there was a lot of natural light but it was actually very dark all throughout the day (this did keep the house cooler!). Also, I guess the vintage decor was not for us as it made things feel dingy. The bedroom especially felt dark and claustrophobic (to be fair, Sovay does include room dimensions in her description). The dining room and the kitchen were our favorite rooms in the house but we just found ourselves not wanting to spend much time at the cottage because of the darkness and awkward layout.
I could see how many people may find the antique cottage cute but...this place just wasn't for us. I would recommend it for people who like an antique/vintage feel and don't mind a tiny bedroom.
Thanks for the kind comments about the kitchen and dining room...I'm glad they were to your liking. As for the dislike of the antiques...not sure what to say...I do have a ton of pictures of the antiques and describe the furniture as such. As for the darkness, a great tip is to slide the window treatments to the side and let the lightness shine in...same is true for the bedroom window and front door. I know sometimes it is not one's instinct to open window treatments but this does work :) And, yes, if you close your window treatments it does provide plenty of shade and coolness...option is yours. Glad to have had the opportunity to host ya, though!
Thank you for letting us stay. We enjoyed the cute cottage that was very central to all the things we wanted to do. We really enjoyed the front area to sit and relax after a long day. We highly recommend this nice place.
What a fabulous guest you were and thank you for visiting us...it was an absolute pleasure. I am so happy to hear you took advantage of the front porch/sitting area, too! It's probably the best feature of the home in my opinion and the one I miss the most. I used to sit there in the morning with my tea and watch all the runners/musicians/hippies/tourists on their way to Barton Springs Pool/Hike and Bike Trail. I'm really glad you had a chance to stay with us and you're welcome back always :)
This was our second time staying in the Zilker cottage, and I can't imagine staying anywhere else for a weekend in Austin! Sovay is an excellent host and the cottage is in walking distance from many of the places we like to visit the most. I'm positive we'll be back soon!
Very comfortable accommodations, plus nice & cool in the warm weather. It was an easy walk to the bus downtown, which is a quick 10-minute ride. Thanks, Sovay!
My husband and I stayed here for a few days in May. Overall everything was fine -easy booking, check-in, check-out, and communication with Sovay. However we had really high expectations for both the cottage and the neighborhood and ended up slightly under-enchanted with both.
The location is good - in the heart of Zilker with walking distance to the park, restaurants on Barton Springs and South Lamar, and an easy drive to South Congress or Downtown. One thing that surprised me a bit location-wise is that even though there are things within walking distance, the neighborhood is not all that pedestrian friendly - if you do walk along South Lamar or Barton Springs it's more like walking along a sun-baked freeway as opposed to tree-lined streets with lovely sidewalks. If walk-ability for meals and entertainment is really important to you, you may want to consider other neighborhoods. However, central location, proximity to the park, and nice residential streets are up sides of this locale.
The cottage itself was cute, but it is quite old. On the day we arrived, it had been raining, and there was a very strong musty smell, which did, thankfully, subside as things dried out, but never went away entirely. The kitchen is particularly out-of-date, in the way that never quite seems clean even though it is, just because it's so old. It wasn't a big issue for us since we didn't cook during our short stay, but might be a problem for some. Also, the water tasted pretty bad, even from the filter, so we ended up buying bottled water to drink. The layout is somewhat odd too - very spacious living, dining, and kitchen areas, but tiny bedroom and bathroom. If you are planning to spend a lot of time hanging out at the house and/or entertaining, you might like the layout, but we felt quite cramped in our basic sleeping, bathing, and dressing activities (and we live in NYC, so accustomed to smaller quarters).
So, overall, not quite what we had in mind. Sovay was a good host and provided lots of useful information. I would consider her other properties for future stays. But depending on what you are looking for in a neighborhood and property, this cottage may not be ideal for you.
I had a great time at the Enchanting Zilker Cottage! Very cozy and clean, and close to lots of fun stuff, plus buses to take you pretty much wherever you want to go. Thank you, Sovay!
