Warm and welcoming at the end of Route 414 in Newfoundland, right on the Atlantic Coastline. Easy and moderate hiking, snomobiling. Great views and trails, usually quiet, in an outport village with lots of history. Boat tours arranged upon request.
Spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean, the mountains and the harbour of La Scie, Newfoundland. Walking and snowshoeing trails right outside the house to overlooks viewing Iceberg Alley where you can see the surf, whales, rocky shores, isolated beaches and icebergs in the summer months. Great bird watching. Excellent snowmobile trail system for the winter months.
Deluxe Queen bed in a private room - shared bathrooms in the house.
La Scie is on the 'French Shore' of Newfoundland, with a rich cultural heritage and many landmarks of interest. We have 5 easy to moderate hiking trails, spectacular views from the lookouts, which can be reached by well maintained gravelled and boardwalk trails and stairways. The icebergs are already passing along the coastline, perhaps you'll see one when you come for a visit!
Fair Haven Retreat is a very clean home where you will find very comfortable furnishings, peace and great food, as well as a full-time weaver/spinner/rug-hooker to show you the heritage fiber arts. Quiet, peaceful, restful are all words that our guests have used to describe their stay. Lessons in weaving, spinning and knitting are available, upon request. Classes are held in the fall and winter months.

Nearby we have the Outport Museum and Tea Room where you can get the very best in traditional Newfoundland cuisine (voted one of the best places to eat in Canada every year since 2006!). You can also take a trip down memory lane by going through the museum and learn a lot about our local French Shore history in this large outport.
During your stay you can expect great cuisine, clean and comfortable surroundings. Also you can expect the walking trails to be easy to moderate, the beach to be very clean and so beautiful! Sunsets are breathtaking as are the sunrises. We do get a lot of wind at times, so that makes for an interesting dynamic.
Our bathroom is shared, large and scrupulously clean. There is a 2nd half bath on the main floor. The whole house is very well maintained and you can feel comfortable even in bare feet.
There is a large 'bridge' outside with two very beckoning deck lounges to rest and relax on - soak in the sun and just smell the fresh salt air. On the deck outside the kitchen there is a bistro table and chairs - perfect to enjoy a beverage or light meal with a view of the harbour, boats, hillsides and watch the clouds, birds and rainbows.
We are a 2 minute walk from the Atlantic Ocean, with views of the ocean and harbour from the bedroom windows, as well as the hills of La Scie, which come aflame in colour in the fall months.
What makes my place unique? Well it would certainly be the cuisine, and the weaving studio, and the remoteness, yet being centrally located in this beautiful outport. On this peninsula we have a snowmobile trail network and offer to host you in the winter months, as well, so you can come with snow machines and go out on the trails then, too.
During the summer months there is the option to take a boat trip with Burton's Adventure Tours to view the icebergs and humpback and minke whales and the incredible rock formations that make this Island so unique. Tours leave from the floating dock in the harbour, just across from Fair Haven Retreat.
Pets: guide dogs are very welcome. I also welcome you to bring your travelling companion pets - the extra charge is $25 for a pet. The closest veterinarian is located in Grand Falls-Windsor - about 3 hours away. We have a resident dog - Zoe - who is a calm well-mannered and well-trained Shepherd/Golden mix.
Guests can keep food in the fridge for your travels the next day. Ice always available. On the front deck there is a bistro table and chairs so you can enjoy your meals and the breezes. There is also a selection of 'lawn' chairs to go out onto the grass with, or kick back and enjoy the summer rays on a separate elevated deck with access from the main living room.
Interaction with Guests
When you arrive we will be here, and you are welcome to visit with us in the family rooms and weaving studio. You will have as much privacy as you like, however, so you won't feel crowded - the house is large, with lots of seating areas.
The scenery is so picturesque. Beautiful views. Lots of interesting formations in the rocky outcrops. The eagles soar right over the house, and the trails are wonderful to explore, with waterfalls, viewpoints, barrens and more. Great bird watching.
The coastline is impressive and boat tours can be arranged for you with an insured and licensed local operator.
Walking, snowshoeing and snowmobiling are great ways to get around here. The main roads are easily accessible with cars, too.

Disposal of the bags into the trash bin. Please be mindful of the youngsters playing on the lawns in the adjacent spaces and always pick up after your pet.
Celeste was warm and welcoming and gave us great suggestions for places to see. She herself is a highlight of our stay in La Scie. We also took her option of dinner at her house. She made a great steak dinner and the conversation was easy.
Celeste made us feel very welcome, immediately. The location was wonderful - just a minute's walk from trails and a spectacular beach. Better than advertised and spotlessly clean. Breakfasts were delicious, especially the jam made by Celeste with berries she picks herself. We had dinner at the b & b one night - an amazing moose stew made by Kathy. Our time with Celeste and Kathy was the highlight of our trip and we will definitely be making a return visit - can't recommend highly enough.
Celeste is a wonderful, heartfelt woman who treats you like one of the family. She could not be nicer. The location is good for La Scie, within a short walk to a beautiful view of the bay and sunset. The rooms are small but clean and neat. The shared bathroom is good-size and very clean. She currently has a problem with water pressure, so the shower was very minimal, but she is working on fixing it. Celeste gives you several options for breakfast.
This place comes highly recommended from us. Celeste was a lovely hostess, we couldn't have asked for anything more welcoming and comfortable. The entire house was clean, the beds were comfortable. They have a sweet dog who is well trained and very gentle. There is lots of beautiful hiking in the area so if you like hiking this is a great place to come. Celeste made us two absolutely delicious home-cooked meals. She had many options for us and they were delicious and healthy. If you are in the area you should stay here.
Fair Haven was beyond our expectations. Very peaceful and beautiful. Easy access to great little walking trails. Celeste is an excellent host who really goes out of her way to make sure her guests are comfortable. She is an excellent cook and we very much enjoyed our meals. Her home is very clean and homey and the beds very comfortable. Would highly recommend.
Fair Haven Retreat and host Celeste was a wonderful place to spend a few days. Celeste is a gracious host, who will provide you with meals if you like, and tell you about all the fascinating places locally to check out. The room was extra clean and had a lovely view of the village. Just a few steps up the road you come to a cliff beach overview of the whole town and its harbor. Kind of magical.
Great experience. Great hostess. Great place.
Love hosting people travelling in and to Newfoundland, sharing the interesting history and the beauty of the Rock!
I'm a weaver, spinner, rug-hooker, have a craft studio and shop in the home and also am told I'm an amazing cook. Meals are beautifully prepared and I enjoy sending my guests on their way with a snack for the road and blessings for their travel.
5 things I can't live without might be: clean, comfortable home; good food artfully prepared; the 'Word of God, fresh water and the ocean nearby so I can be filled with sound of the waves lapping the shore.
I like to walk the trails in La Scie and hear the birds singing out while listening to the ocean surf. I'm a weaver, spinner and rug-hooker, so spend my time being creative and also cooking nutritious meals for guests.
As a host I hope to attend to the details of your stay, planning ahead with you for your arrival.
