About this listing
Get closer to nature + culture with a stay at Tibet Garden. Wake up with chickens + butterflies in the garden + sleep with the fireflies. Cook up a feast in the fully equipped kitchen + watch DVD's on the 47" flat screen. Enjoy traditional + modern.
One of the perks of the rainy season. Only during heavy rain and it only lasts a short time before draining away, but you may be treated to a waterfall view right from the porch!
Tibet Garden is a peaceful haven located in a small traditional village just outside of Ubud town center. The surrounding area is awash in lush green rice fields, patches of living jungle, and Balinese temples that come alive with vibrant color, hypnotic sounds and magical spirit during festival times. You will be greeted each morning in the garden by butterflies sipping nectar from colorful flowers, birds and their beautiful songs, chickens playing and sunbathing, and a general sense of village tranquility. It is a perfect place for yoga, meditation, reading, writing, etc..
The house itself is decorated in mixed Balinese and Tibetan style and has one large main room with comfy bed, a small side "alcove with a view" with extra bed looking out over the rice paddies, semi-open air natural stone and marble bathroom with hot water shower and two small fish pools (currently out of order sorry!), as well as fully equipped kitchen. Staying at Tibet Garden includes semi daily cleaning by a friendly Balinese woman who lives nearby (Ibu Kadek) - and possible delicious Indonesian home cooking by request. Linens are provided, as well as 47" flat screen TV with Indovision satellite channels, Wi-Fi (high speed - recently upgraded!), drinking water, garage space for parking are all included.
You have the whole house and garden to yourself!
Interaction with Guests
I usually live in the house myself, so when it is available for renting most likely means I am traveling at that time, or at the very least in another part of Bali. I am accessible by email and (website hidden) most of the time, and Ibu Kadek lives just nearby and can help you with some assistance should you need it. That being said, this is a private house and not a hotel, so keep that in mind that there is some level of independence required to stay here.
Tibet Garden is located just outside central Ubud in the small hamlet of Bentuyung Shakti (the same as where Eat, Pray, Love was filmed). It is a very quiet and private setting, with big and lush garden, and surrounded by nature (jungle, rice fields, small river) and traditional village life that will seem a world away from the hustle and bustle of Ubud town center. The house is situated down a small path away from the road and you will hear the roosters much more than any motorbikes!
Within walking distance of the house there is laundry, several small restaurants, and a convenience shop. Every Friday and Sunday night you can see a wonderful dance performance of the unique Jegog Bamboo Gamelan being performed in the local temple. You are also most welcome to join in the village ceremonies (if you are lucky enough to be here on an auspicious day - not every day but they do happen quite often and you are guaranteed to experience it on every full moon!).
If you would like to attend a ceremony or just get involved with Balinese daily life you can tell Ibu Kadek and borrow from us the Balinese traditional dress, or buy your own in town to wear. I can also advise you on great eating places in the Ubud area, walks through the countryside, nearby waterfalls and sacred places, local bird life, and other traditional dances.
The house is conveniently located about 7 minutes ride straight up the road (Jalan Suweta) from the central Ubud Palace in Bentuyung Shakti Village. This is the same village and very near the house where the movie "Eat, Pray, Love" was shot. And when you get here, you will understand why they chose this as their place for the ideal Ubud village atmosphere.
Please note there is no public transportation in this area (just as in any of the villages surrounding Ubud). The best and most convenient way to get around Ubud in general is by motorbike - we can help get you in touch with the rental people with quality bikes at very cheap daily rates. Bicycle would also be practical but you must be fit to do this in the tropical heat. Walking is lovely too, but it takes a while, although the way passes through some gorgeous scenery and Balinese cultural life along the way. Very reasonably priced taxi in and out of town can also be arranged, as can airport pickup and day trips with polite and relaxed private driver for a tour around to see the wonders of Bali. Ubud makes a great and central base for this.
Respect the Balinese people and surrounding nature. Cultivate good energy here. And please help to feed my fish (fish pool out of order now). Also when you make the booking thanks to give me exact arrival details so that we can be prepared to receive you at the house or help arrange your transport should you require this. Thanks!
Nestled in a private spot beside river and jungle but within the traditional Balinese village only a 7 minute ride to Ubud town center. Beautiful location, quiet, and large natural garden.
Fantastic house in a perfect setting! Shakar was so helpful in making arrangements for us. We were able to rent a motor bike from Ibu Kadek right at the house. She also got us tickets to a show at her temple that we really enjoyed. We made coffee at the house everyday and had breakfast at Paula's down the street. Delicious and wow, what a view of the rice fields! Loved everything about staying here!! Thank you so much!
My girlfriend and I stayed at the Tibet Garden for two weekend nights in mid-August and it was an absolutely pleasant experience. Staying at the Tibet Garden is really as close as a traveller can come to tasting what real Balinese living might be like I believe, as this is an authentic traditional Balinese home.
When we arrived, Ibu Kadek welcomed us and introduced us to the house. She is very kind and easy to communicate with, so don't be shy. We rented her bike at a fair price (lower than than the standard Ubud rate), and she was able to get us some tickets to a dance that goes on every week a temple just down the road. The dance was of good length and very entertaining to watch, so I highly recommend taking advantage of this experience if you have the chance. Unfortunately while rafting in the Ayung river, my phone got destroyed. I was a little distraught, but Ibu Kadek saved the day by selling an old phone of hers to me. It was basic, but got me through the rest of my trip in Bali with no hitches thankfully! Just goes to show that if you run into problems, she can usually come up with an innovate solution, just ask. We were grateful for this.
The location is absolutely perfect for what we were looking for - somewhere away from the bustle of central Ubud yet close enough that we could visit the area in 10 to 15 minutes on the motorbike. Ubud itself was quite chaotic when we stayed as it was the weekend before Indonesian Independence Day and there were all kinds of festivals being prepared for, so staying in this area of the town was a charm.
The house is a bit back from the main road so trying to find it by yourself might be a challenge. If you take up a driver that Shakar or Ibu Kadek can arrange for you though, you'll have no problem getting there. The surrounding area is quiet so you'll have no problem sleeping at night and enjoying sitting on the porch during the daytime hours. The house is part of small complex consisting of a few properties, so you'll probably run into neighbors and their pets. Everyone was so nice and welcoming though, so the only thing we were upset with was having to move on after our stay. We will definitely try to book again when have the chance to come back to Ubud. All in all, highly recommended!
P.S. When you stay, don't forget to check out Paula's restaurant a couple minutes south of the house. Excellent food and awesome vistas of the rice paddies and coconut trees.
Utterly fantastic place in Ubud. Having lived for more than 5 years in Bali (phone number hidden)) it was a pleasure to finally discover a true Balinese home, not a home overly stylized, out of place to the context of traditional Balinese living. Home has all modern conveniences. Even better, I made an Instant Book at 9am in the morning and Shakar was amazing, responding immoderately to my request to arrive to the home before the normal 2pm checkin time — and responding from a mountaintop in Malaysia. Also wonderful is the landowner and caretaker, Ibu Kadek. Eager to stay here again on my next return to Bali.
We spent a wonderful five days at Tibet Garden. The house is in an amazing location in a beautiful authentic village just outside of the hustle and bustle of Ubud. We were greeted by the wonderful Ibu Kadek and her family who took care of us for our whole stay with anything we asked for. We became good friends over the course of the stay and were very impressed with her amazing hospitality. The garden is beautiful and offers a quiet retreat from the city and wonderful sounds of nature. The house is very authentic and comfortable with an impressive outside bathroom and a front patio to relax on. Kadek can help you with scooter and bike rental which gives you easy access to the area. We definitely recommend this place, one of the highlights of our trip to Bali, we loved it!
I only stayed here one night, but wish I would've spent my entire trip here! The garden is beautiful and sitting on the front porch watching the sunset was one of my favorite views during my stay. Ibu was beyond helpful especially coordinating rides into town, making amazing food, and telling me the best local spots. Shakar is very thorough and endures you have the best stay possible. He even took the time to swing by and say hi when he was in town! I would highly recommend staying here!
The Tjbet Garden was a beautiful, breath taking sight! Every corner I peeked around I was taken aback by how picturesque it all was.
The location is great- a few minute scooter ride outside of the center of Ubud, but it's a straight shot so you won't get lost and you get to see local life.
The host was wonderful and helped me get tickets to a Balinese dance my evening there. It was beautiful and I was very glad she suggested it!
Shakar was so unbelievably sweet and willing to help with any and everything.
I rented her scooter and loved taking it around.
This would be a delightful couples getaway- I would love to bring my boyfriend back with me!

About the Host, Shakar
Hello and welcome to all those planning a trip to this beautiful village of Ubud. I have been living here already 10 years, and in that time I have also traveled extensively around the world. But I can honestly say that "home sweet home" is right here, surrounded by nature, art, and culture, on the island of Bali. And there is no better place to experience all this than right in the heartland of Ubud.
My life here is basically all about arts, culture, and nature. I enjoy taking part in many Balinese cultural ceremonies, and if you come and stay here you will be most welcome too, with traditional clothing to wear available to you. My house is close to the people in the village, but also in a very private setting with only jungle, rice paddy, garden around you. It's a simple and beautiful life.
If you come and stay at my place, I will also be happy to tell you all the good info about places to see around the island, amazing and delicious foods to eat, and whatever other insider knowledge I can offer to you. I love nature activities such as bird watching and exploring the undersea world, and I can let you know the best spots. But it may well be that you never want to leave the house because it is just so peaceful and delightful in these natural surroundings.
Looking forward to welcome you.
