Description

The space

Butterfly Haven @ Tibet Garden is a peaceful haven located in a small traditional village just outside of Ubud town center. Please note the house is NOT located in Ubud town center, but a short vehicle ride outside. The surrounding area is awash in lush green rice fields, patches of living jungle, and Balinese temples that come alive with vibrant color, hypnotic sounds and magical spirit during festival times. You will be greeted each morning in the garden by butterflies sipping nectar from colorful flowers, birds and their beautiful songs, chickens playing and sunbathing, and a general sense of village tranquility. It is a perfect place for yoga, meditation, reading, writing, etc..

The house itself is decorated in mixed Balinese and Tibetan style and has one large main room with comfy bed and couch, a small side "alcove with a view" with extra bed looking out over the rice paddies, semi-open air natural stone and marble bathroom with hot water shower and two small fish pools (currently out of order sorry!), as well as fully equipped kitchen. Staying at Tibet Garden includes semi daily cleaning by a friendly Balinese woman who lives nearby (Ibu Kadek) - and possible delicious Indonesian home cooking by request. Linens are provided, as well as 47" flat screen TV with Indovision international satellite channels, Wi-Fi (high speed - recently upgraded!), drinking water, garage space for parking motorbikes are all included.

Guest access

You have the whole house and garden to yourself!

Interaction with guests

I usually live in the house myself, so when it is available for renting this most likely means I am traveling at that time, or at the very least in another part of Bali. I am accessible by email and most of the time, and Ibu Kadek lives just nearby and can help you with some assistance should you need it. That being said, this is a private house and not a hotel, so keep that in mind that there is some level of independence required to stay here.

The neighborhood

Tibet Garden is not in Ubud town center, but located just outside central Ubud (3 kilometers to the North) in the small hamlet of Bentuyung Shakti (the same as where Eat, Pray, Love was filmed). It is a very quiet and private setting, with big and lush garden, and surrounded by nature (jungle, rice fields, small river) and traditional village life that will seem a world away from the hustle and bustle of Ubud town center. The house is situated down a small path away from the road and you will hear the bird songs, roosters, and crickets much more than any motorbikes!

Within walking distance of the house there is laundry, several small restaurants, and a convenience shop. Every Friday night you can see a wonderful dance performance of the unique Jegog Bamboo Gamelan being performed in the local temple. You are also most welcome to join in the village ceremonies (if you are lucky enough to be here on an auspicious day - not every day but they do happen quite often and you are guaranteed to experience it on every full moon!).

If you would like to attend a ceremony or just get involved with Balinese daily life you can tell Ibu Kadek and rent from her the Balinese traditional dress, or buy your own in town to wear. I can also advise you on great eating places in the Ubud area (Ibu Kadek also cooks great Balinese food to serve at the house for a small fee), walks through the countryside, nearby waterfalls and sacred places, local bird life, and other traditional dances.

Getting around

The house is not in Ubud town center, but conveniently located about 7 minutes drive or 40 minutes walking straight up the road (Jalan Suweta) from the central Ubud Palace in Bentuyung Shakti Village. This is the same village and very near the house where the movie "Eat, Pray, Love" was shot. And when you get here, you will understand why they chose this as their place for the ideal Ubud village atmosphere.

Please note there is no public transportation in this area (just as in any of the villages surrounding Ubud). The best and most convenient way to get around Ubud in general is by motorbike - we can help get you in touch with the rental people with quality bikes at very cheap daily rates. Bicycle would also be practical and take 10-15 minutes into town, but you must be fit to do this in the tropical heat as the return ride is gentle uphill and needs more effort. Walking is lovely too, but it takes a while around 40 minutes, although the way passes through some gorgeous scenery and Balinese cultural life along the way. Very reasonably priced taxi in and out of town can also be arranged on call, as can airport pickup and day trips with polite and relaxed private driver for a tour around to see the wonders of Bali. Ubud makes a great and central base for this.

My family arrived at Shakar authentic and greeny house in the evening as expected. We were greeted by Ibu Kadek (Shakar's neighbour) who takes care of business when he's away and her dog, Dingo (cute fellow who like to shake hand). The stay was great, we enjoyed the green garden , the spacious house and jungle environment. The bathroom was very unique with open space. Be aware of the electricity shortage, if you turn on the air conditioning, be sure to turn off the water heater (for the bathroom) and some lights. Ibu Kadek was warm and helpful, she helped us to get motorbike with reasonable price, she cooked us good Balinese breakfast (She charged at reasonable price). Shakar was always on the phone to answer and give us guidance. I would stay again next time.

Response from Shakar:
Thanks so much for the nice words about Tibet Garden, Malgorzata - I just wanted to make one clarification for any future guests who may be reading this - perhaps "isolated" is not the most accurate description. The house is indeed completely private and surrounded entirely by nature. But we do have some neighbors not so far away, as well as Ibu Kadek and her family just nearby too. You get the full feeling of being alone in the Balinese countryside but there are people nearby to assist should you need them for any reason. Also it's about a 7 minute drive to the heart of downtown Ubud. Thanks so much Malgorzata for your stay and good energy!

Shakur's house is a great place to relax and take in nature. It's quiet and away from town but close enough to hop on a scooter and get near the action. Kadek was very helpful and made our stay very comfortable. Highly recommended!

If you're looking for a relaxing and peaceful place out of the centre of Bali, go for it. Highly recommend this place. Special thanks to the lovely Ibu Kadek who welcomed us and made us feel home.

Shakar was traveling so his friend Ibu Kadek met us. She was really helpful and met us at the house. She also invited us to the ceremony to the local temple and gave us Bali clothes for it. And it was awesome! The house is very beautiful outside and photos don't do it justice. It was really big for 2 people. The house is located in a quiet old part of Ubud. We liked it because we had a motorbike, but if you're looking for a nightlife that may not be an optimal option. Also due to local insects and chickens outside it can get quite noisy at night. I personally liked it cause it helped me to fall asleep. Hovewer, could be a problem for city dwellers :) In general, my best stay at Bali so far. Liked it a lot. Would definitely stay again.

Hello and welcome to all those planning a trip to this beautiful village of Ubud. I have been living here already 10 years, and in that time I have also traveled extensively around the world. But I can honestly say that "home sweet home" is right here, surrounded by nature, art, and culture, on the island of Bali. And there is no better place to experience all this than right in the heartland of Ubud.

My life here is basically all about arts, culture, and nature. I enjoy taking part in many Balinese cultural ceremonies, and if you come and stay here you will be most welcome too, with traditional clothing to wear available to you. My house is close to the people in the village, but also in a very private setting with only jungle, rice paddy, garden around you. It's a simple and beautiful life.

If you come and stay at my place, I will also be happy to tell you all the good info about places to see around the island, amazing and delicious foods to eat, and whatever other insider knowledge I can offer to you. I love nature activities such as bird watching and exploring the undersea world, and I can let you know the best spots. But it may well be that you never want to leave the house because it is just so peaceful and delightful in these natural surroundings.

Looking forward to welcome you.
