About this listing
Situated in an idyllic hamlet in the Northern Lake District, on the slopes of England's third highest mountain, the apartment sleeps four in two en-suite bedrooms. Keswick is 1.5 miles away.
The apartment is on the top floor (second floor) of the Victorian house. It has two bedrooms, one of which has views over Keswick and Derwentwater and the other has views over the mature gardens and Bassenthwaite Lake. Each of the rooms has its own TV, radio and hairdryer. There is a cosy, comfortable lounge, a fully equipped kitchen (fridge/freezer, dishwasher, microwave, gas hob and electric oven) and a dining area alongside the kitchen. The apartment has its own private entrance and private parking spaces. You are also welcome to use our wifi.
The apartment is situated within a Victorian Lakeland Country House, set in over two acres of mature gardens, with its own putting course, which provides entertainment for young and old. There are also resident red squirrels and Philip the Pheasant, who enjoy their daily meal of nuts and seed!
In terms of location, we are based in Applethwaite, a small village which is five minutes by car from Keswick, or a 25 minute walk down a beautiful country lane (with magnificent views). It is also very conveniently situated for getting to all areas of the Lake District - e.g. Buttermere is 25 minutes, Grasmere is 20 minutes, Penrith is 20 minutes, and Windermere is 45 minutes away (by car).
Keswick has a wealth of pubs, cafes and restaurants, a cinema and The Theatre by the Lake. It also has lots of shops, including numerous walking shops, should you need to get kitted up. There is also a small bistro less than 5 minutes by foot up the lane.
As the apartment is on the slopes of Skiddaw, the elevated position of the house offers magnificent views over Keswick, Derwentwater, Borrowdale and many famous peaks such as Catbells. Once there it feels as though you're a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
We live onsite and will be there to welcome you and share our local knowledge with you, to help you make the most of your stay here - be that local cafes, art galleries, walking routes, local beer etc! We can help with bike storage and drying facilities if needed.
Many people like to visit this area for a week or more, and we would be happy to discuss a weekly rate. Whilst we've set the minimum stay as 3 nights, if bookings allow we would be happy to consider one or two nights - if this interests you, please get in touch and we'd be happy to discuss.
We absolutely love the corner of the world in which we live, and look forward to welcoming you!
We don't have many house rules, however,
1. On departure, please leave the apartment in the same clean condition as you will find it.
2. Please remove all outdoor shoes indoors so as to ensure that the carpets remain as clean as possible.
3. One small pet is permitted, by prior arrangement. There is a £15 charge for this, to reflect the additional cleaning.
4. No smoking is permitted within the apartment.
The main thing is that you feel relaxed, at home and enjoy your stay!
Gail was most welcoming and kindly provided some basic necessities for tea and coffee. The top floor apartment offered two bedrooms and two bathrooms, so much more than we needed. The presentation excellent, and clean beyond all reasonable expectations. The location and views were riral picture perfect, but only 5 minute drive to the gorgeous town of Keswick.
Irvine house was excellent, spacious and the views were what we came to Keswick for. Having the extra space to lounge around was welcome after our incredibly lovely walking days in this most extraordinary part on England. Keswick is close by so as Gail mentioned everything we needed was there to make our stay like being at home. For those who know anything about the history of climbing this house is a hidden gem. Dr.Wakefield owned the house and is one of the most celebrated climbers in the Lake region. Also the first 2 people to attempt Everest in 1921 George Mallary and Irvine were close friends of Wakefield who met to discuss many of their climbing challenges at the Applewaite property.
Irvine apartment exceeded our expectations in every way - we loved the peace and quiet whilst only being a few minutes from Keswick, easy access to great walks and local pub food. Gale and Tom were wonderful hosts and provided a warm welcome and were generous in their local knowledge. The garden setting was lovely with magnificent views from our bedroom. The apartment was incredibly spacious with a separate living area away from the kitchen. We would definitely recommend this place and would love to return. Some personal highlights included a red squirrel sighting in the garden and enjoying the incredibly good food at the Pheasant Inn only 5 minutes away.
Irvine is an excellent place for stay. Gail was very helpful and there were many handy things in kitchen.
Gail is a very welcoming and helpful person, she gave us a lot of precious advices for our stay in Irvine apartment.
The place is gorgeous with scenic view on the mountains and lake surrounding. The apartment is very well-appointed, snug and cosy. The cleaning was perfect.
The house is very quiet and nicer than on the pictures.
Keswick is a lovely town you can reach either by the road or by walk in the mountains, longer but so scenic. You can take a lot of pictures of the mountains, sheeps and the lake of course :)
Many thanks Gail for allowing us to stay in Irvine apartment. We highly recommend it.

About the Host, Gail
I am an energetic and outgoing person and love being in the outdoors, preferably up the side of a mountain! I love cycling, swimming, fell-walking - and reading at the end of a busy day.
I've lived in the Lake District for 20 years now, and haven't once tired of the breathtaking views from the house. My husband and I have travelled all over the world, and love exploring new places and cultures independently, with our rucksacks on our backs. We really enjoy meeting people of all ages.
We have recently become grandparents for the first time and are thoroughly enjoying the time we spend with our little grandson who has bewitched us.
