Situated in an idyllic hamlet in the Northern Lake District, on the slopes of England's third highest mountain, the apartment sleeps four in two en-suite bedrooms. Keswick is 1.5 miles away.
The apartment is on the top floor (second floor) of the Victorian house. It has two bedrooms, one of which has views over Keswick and Derwentwater and the other has views over the mature gardens and Bassenthwaite Lake. Each of the rooms has its own TV, radio and hairdryer. There is a cosy, comfortable lounge, a fully equipped kitchen (fridge/freezer, dishwasher, microwave, gas hob and electric oven) and a dining area alongside the kitchen. The apartment has its own private entrance and private parking spaces. You are also welcome to use our wifi.
The apartment is situated within a Victorian Lakeland Country House, set in over two acres of mature gardens, with its own putting course, which provides entertainment for young and old. There are also resident red squirrels and Philip the Pheasant, who enjoy their daily meal of nuts and seed!
In terms of location, we are based in Applethwaite, a small village which is five minutes by car from Keswick, or a 25 minute walk down a beautiful country lane (with magnificent views). It is also very conveniently situated for getting to all areas of the Lake District - e.g. Buttermere is 25 minutes, Grasmere is 20 minutes, Penrith is 20 minutes, and Windermere is 45 minutes away (by car).
Keswick has a wealth of pubs, cafes and restaurants, a cinema and The Theatre by the Lake. It also has lots of shops, including numerous walking shops, should you need to get kitted up. There is also a small bistro less than 5 minutes by foot up the lane.
As the apartment is on the slopes of Skiddaw, the elevated position of the house offers magnificent views over Keswick, Derwentwater, Borrowdale and many famous peaks such as Catbells. Once there it feels as though you're a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
We live onsite and will be there to welcome you and share our local knowledge with you, to help you make the most of your stay here - be that local cafes, art galleries, walking routes, local beer etc! We can help with bike storage and drying facilities if needed.
Many people like to visit this area for a week or more, and we would be happy to discuss a weekly rate. Whilst we've set the minimum stay as 3 nights, if bookings allow we would be happy to consider one or two nights - if this interests you, please get in touch and we'd be happy to discuss.
We absolutely love the corner of the world in which we live, and look forward to welcoming you!
We don't have many house rules, however,
1. On departure, please leave the apartment in the same clean condition as you will find it.
2. Please remove all outdoor shoes indoors so as to ensure that the carpets remain as clean as possible.
3. One small pet is permitted, by prior arrangement. There is a £15 charge for this, to reflect the additional cleaning.
4. No smoking is permitted within the apartment.
The main thing is that you feel relaxed, at home and enjoy your stay!
Truly beautiful views, spacious, well-equipped flat, and lovely, very helpful host who provided us with all the information we could potentially need. The internet was rather slow but this isn't really a problem if you are out on the fells all day anyway. I can only recommend!
Gail was extremely hospitable and welcoming when we arrived and throughout our stay. The apartment was at the top of some steep stairs but the views were worth the climb. It was homely, clean and warm. The location was excellent for exploring the lake district and the nearby town of Keswick was quaint and has everything you need.
This is a wonderful, spacious, well-equipped and luxurious apartment at the top of the house. It is well located close to Keswick with stunning views on a clear day. The hosts are very responsive and will provide good advice in advance of travel, and are onsite and helpful if needed. The only small niggle is that the wi-fi is intermittent and painfully slow, to use it one really needs to go downstairs and stand by the router.
Tom and Gail welcomed us (family of two adults and two children aged 9 and 14) warmly, and Tom showed us up to the Irvine apartment. It is on the top floor of the house and has a wide private staircase leading up to it from it's own door into the garden. When we arrived, there was already tea, coffee, milk and biscuits waiting for us! The house is a lovely slate-built place typical of 19th century construction by wealthy middle class people who 'discovered' the Lakes. The apartment itself is large, very well equipped, and you feel at home right away. There's a boot rack and plenty of coat hooks in the entrance lobby, and lots of storage space in the apartment. The views from the twin bedroom, looking over Keswick to the head of Derwentwater and Catbells, are stunning - even in the rain and cloud! Skiddaw is right behind the house, and if you turn left out of the driveway, you can follow the single track road straight up to the small car park between Latrigg and Skiddaw. Here you can have a short walk on Latrigg (again, stunning views), or a longer walk up Skiddaw to one of the finest all-round panoramas in the Lakes (and a good walk). We loved this apartment, and would visit again if the opportunity arises. It's great value, and we would recommend it highly.
Gail and Tom were very friendly and helpful, and it was a pleasure to meet them. The house is in one of the most beautiful positions in the Lakes, yet is easily accessible and convenient for Keswick. The apartment was very spacious, comfortable and well-equipped, and the views simply stunning.
Stayed 12-16th Aug. Excellent quiet location, great views over towards Keswick. Lovely owners, very helpful. Would recommend.
We felt so warmly welcomed by Tom, and our accommodations lived up to everything we had anticipated, and more. The views were truly stunning, and the little drives and walks we took, recommended by Tom, were just lovely.
The wonderful layout of the rooms and kitchen provided way more space than we needed, but it felt luxurious to us. Wonderful place to stay and perfect location for really experiencing the Lake District.

I am an energetic and outgoing person and love being in the outdoors, preferably up the side of a mountain! I love cycling, swimming, fell-walking - and reading at the end of a busy day.
I've lived in the Lake District for 20 years now, and haven't once tired of the breathtaking views from the house. My husband and I have travelled all over the world, and love exploring new places and cultures independently, with our rucksacks on our backs. We really enjoy meeting people of all ages.
We have recently become grandparents for the first time and are thoroughly enjoying the time we spend with our little grandson who has bewitched us.
