Situated in an idyllic hamlet in the Northern Lake District, on the slopes of England's third highest mountain, the apartment sleeps four in two en-suite bedrooms. Keswick is 1.5 miles away.
The apartment is on the top floor (second floor) of the Victorian house. It has two bedrooms, one of which has views over Keswick and Derwentwater and the other has views over the mature gardens and Bassenthwaite Lake. Each of the rooms has its own TV, radio and hairdryer. There is a cosy, comfortable lounge, a fully equipped kitchen (fridge/freezer, dishwasher, microwave, gas hob and electric oven) and a dining area alongside the kitchen. The apartment has its own private entrance and private parking spaces. You are also welcome to use our wifi.
The apartment is situated within a Victorian Lakeland Country House, set in over two acres of mature gardens, with its own putting course, which provides entertainment for young and old. There are also resident red squirrels and Philip the Pheasant, who enjoy their daily meal of nuts and seed!
In terms of location, we are based in Applethwaite, a small village which is five minutes by car from Keswick, or a 25 minute walk down a beautiful country lane (with magnificent views). It is also very conveniently situated for getting to all areas of the Lake District - e.g. Buttermere is 25 minutes, Grasmere is 20 minutes, Penrith is 20 minutes, and Windermere is 45 minutes away (by car).
Keswick has a wealth of pubs, cafes and restaurants, a cinema and The Theatre by the Lake. It also has lots of shops, including numerous walking shops, should you need to get kitted up. There is also a small bistro less than 5 minutes by foot up the lane.
As the apartment is on the slopes of Skiddaw, the elevated position of the house offers magnificent views over Keswick, Derwentwater, Borrowdale and many famous peaks such as Catbells. Once there it feels as though you're a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
We live onsite and will be there to welcome you and share our local knowledge with you, to help you make the most of your stay here - be that local cafes, art galleries, walking routes, local beer etc! We can help with bike storage and drying facilities if needed.
Many people like to visit this area for a week or more, and we would be happy to discuss a weekly rate. Whilst we've set the minimum stay as 3 nights, if bookings allow we would be happy to consider one or two nights - if this interests you, please get in touch and we'd be happy to discuss.
We absolutely love the corner of the world in which we live, and look forward to welcoming you!
When it rains in Keswick, and it seems that's quite often for the Lake District, you will find Irvine apartments a lovely place in which to stay indoors - that is, if you appreciate a quaint English country house setting. That's what happened to us, and we spent almost 3/4 of a day ensconced in the dainty living room with windows overlooking a manicured lawn reading.
The surrounding views of picturesque English countryside only enhanced the experience. And Irvine's windows allowed us to enjoy such unique views. Irvine is surrounded by scenes worthy of English landscape paintings yet it is only a 5 min drive to Keswick town centre where you can get Thai, Chinese and Indian food all clustered on the main street, not to mention the ubiquitous English pubs and little shops.
Gail and Tom run a clean and fully operational establishment. Everything is where it should be and in good working order. Bed linens were crisp and clean. We were briefed even on emergency procedures and Gail left a personal note to greet us when we arrived as she was taking a break in London. We did get to meet her later. Tom, who briefed us, had such a kind air about him we felt immediately at home and welcomed.
Just a word on Gail who is the main communicator for the accommodation. Her emails were brimming over with enthusiasm for my stay and very full of helpful information. She took the trouble to tell me the scenic route into Keswick which runs through the lake district rather than overusing the motorway. Then when asked about where I could stop over for lunch and what I could explore, she smothered me with local knowledge. I felt as if we were friends from her first email!
England is to be experienced in many ways. One way to experience a unique part of it is, in my view, to stay at Irvine apartment and interact with its hosts.
The apartment was comfortable and warm, located in very beautiful grounds.
Access from Keswick, given a car, was easy.
One surprise was that provision of towels was not included (a first for us after many airbnb stays).
Our hosts were friendly and helpful.
We enjoyed our stay very much. Tom was very helpful with all our needs and gave us great insight s on what to do while visiting .the grounds and apartment and views were all stunning .
It is a wonderful place to stay. Really enjoy the experience at Irvine.
We (myself, husband and 12 year old son) found Irvine Apartment to be an ideal place to stay. The location is stunning, Gail and Tom are extremely helpful and friendly and the apartment itself is immaculate, very spacious and very comfortable - a wonderful place to stay!
Very highly recommended.
I really like the stay our stay in Irvine Apartment. It was very clean, spacious, neat and had all the utensils and things needed for comfortable cooking. There is however a flight of steps to climb to reach the appartment which can be a little challenging if you have a big bag, but it is manageable.
It is within walking distance to Skidaw which gave very beautiful scenery over Lake District.
It is also near Keswick (about 5-10min drive) town which made it very convenient if we needed anything from town.
The host Gail and Ryan were very friendly, hospitable and helpful to give us handy tips. =)
Gail and her husband, Tom, were amazing hosts. If only the world were filled with people like them. Their home is in the Lake District, a stunningly beautiful part of England. Their house is likewise, as is the spacious, immaculately clean apartment in which we stayed and from which we had spectacular views. Our next trip to the Lake District will most definitely include a stay in the Irvine apartment.

Gail and Tom Ryan live on site at Applethwaite House and are readily available to help out if need be. We enjoyed our stay in a palatial apartment on the second floor of this historic house. Amenities and fittings were all of an excellent standard as was the garden surrounds with well manicured lawns, a putting course and a croquet green, where squirrels and pheasants were spotted.
There is an easy 25 minute walk into Keswick on public footpaths through sheep pastures and over a few styles.
Keswick is a great place to buy hiking and biking equipment and the coffee and tea rooms abounded. Take a no 77 bus on a circular trip past Derwent Water and over through Seatoller and back via Whinlatter Pass- far easier than driving yourself along narrow roads!
A lovely place to explore the Lakes District. On ascending the stairs we were surprised by so many rooms all spotless and comfortable. The view was great, bed comfortable, shower good and Gail is a charming host.
Apartment and Gail were both lovely, great place to stay!
