About This Listing
Situated in an idyllic hamlet in the Northern Lake District, on the slopes of England's third highest mountain, the apartment sleeps four in two en-suite bedrooms. Keswick is 1.5 miles away.
The apartment is on the top floor (second floor) of the Victorian house. It has two bedrooms, one of which has views over Keswick and Derwentwater and the other has views over the mature gardens and Bassenthwaite Lake. Each of the rooms has its own TV, radio and hairdryer. There is a cosy, comfortable lounge, a fully equipped kitchen (fridge/freezer, dishwasher, microwave, gas hob and electric oven) and a dining area alongside the kitchen. The apartment has its own private entrance and private parking spaces. You are also welcome to use our wifi.
The apartment is situated within a Victorian Lakeland Country House, set in over two acres of mature gardens, with its own putting course, which provides entertainment for young and old. There are also resident red squirrels and Philip the Pheasant, who enjoy their daily meal of nuts and seed!
In terms of location, we are based in Applethwaite, a small village which is five minutes by car from Keswick, or a 25 minute walk down a beautiful country lane (with magnificent views). It is also very conveniently situated for getting to all areas of the Lake District - e.g. Buttermere is 25 minutes, Grasmere is 20 minutes, Penrith is 20 minutes, and Windermere is 45 minutes away (by car).
Keswick has a wealth of pubs, cafes and restaurants, a cinema and The Theatre by the Lake. It also has lots of shops, including numerous walking shops, should you need to get kitted up. There is also a small bistro less than 5 minutes by foot up the lane.
As the apartment is on the slopes of Skiddaw, the elevated position of the house offers magnificent views over Keswick, Derwentwater, Borrowdale and many famous peaks such as Catbells. Once there it feels as though you're a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
We live onsite and will be there to welcome you and share our local knowledge with you, to help you make the most of your stay here - be that local cafes, art galleries, walking routes, local beer etc! We can help with bike storage and drying facilities if needed.
Many people like to visit this area for a week or more, and we would be happy to discuss a weekly rate. Whilst we've set the minimum stay as 3 nights, if bookings allow we would be happy to consider one or two nights - if this interests you, please get in touch and we'd be happy to discuss.
We absolutely love the corner of the world in which we live, and look forward to welcoming you!
We don't have many house rules, however,
1. On departure, please leave the apartment in the same clean condition as you will find it.
2. Please remove all outdoor shoes indoors so as to ensure that the carpets remain as clean as possible.
3. One small pet is permitted, by prior arrangement. There is a £15 charge for this, to reflect the additional cleaning.
4. No smoking is permitted within the apartment.
The main thing is that you feel relaxed, at home and enjoy your stay!
The property was amazing and Gail was very sweet. Our satnav in the rental car kept taking us a long way, and to the wrong place so make sure to follow Gail's directions. One of the rooms smelled a bit of old house and didn't air out with leaving the window open, but we only needed one and enjoyed the room facing the street instead. The two bathrooms are wonderfully modern and clean. The kitchen came in handy, and even better the lounge was wonderful to warm up in after a long hike. The wifi was pretty useless but hopefully the rural Internet service provider can upgrade. We did not find it too much of a bother as we spent most of our time out and about anyway. We really liked this location as it is up high and away from the noise of Keswick.
We were made to feel welcome and allowed to leave our car early in order to get out on our walk. The apartment was excellent and provided everything we needed. The area is stunning and was a great location to combine some wonderful walking with visiting family and friends.
Gail made us feel very welcome providing high chair and even some toys for our son!
The 2 flights of stairs were large stories, which was tiring after a long day of walking, but overall a lovely place to stay.
Gail and Tom were the perfect hosts, and the apartment was wonderful. Gail was a great correspondent before we arrived, answering our questions about weather, what to bring, etc. And the apartment contained detailed information about the appliances, etc. We also were given hiking maps, driving instructions, brochures on local attractions, everything we could possibly need to know. The surroundings of the apartment are absolutely beautiful, and the views from our windows were spectacular. The location was perfect--minutes away from several lakes, hiking sites, restaurants, grocery stores, but tucked in half way up a mountain with the only sounds being the birds and the sheep. We felt very much at home. It was a perfect vacation, and we feel in love with the Lake District and with our most gracious hosts. We would come back in a heartbeat.
It is a beautiful apartment! It is clean, spacious and full equipped. We can cook for ourselves and sit on sofa to watch some movies. When we arrived, there are some coffee, milk and biscuit waiting for us! The view of the two single beds room is the best I ever seem in lake district! We feel like we are at home. Tom and Gail are lovely couple! They are friendly! Before we come, Gail patiently gave me a lot of useful information. Because we have too much luggages, Tom even drive us to Keswick. Thanks a lot!
Beautiful apartment with stunning views across Keswick to Derwentwater. It is clean, tidy and nicely presented with all the key things you will need for a self-catering holiday. It is a really great location to explore much of the north lakes, with local amenities nearb but also only a short drive to more wild, uncommercial areas. The hosts were warm, welcoming and very knowledgeable about the local area. Would highly recommend Irvine Apartment for the good location, great views and lovely accommodation. Will definitely be back soon!
My partner, friends and I stayed in Irvine apartment in Applethwaite Country House. The apartment was comfortable and spacious and the kitchen was well equipped for us to cook some yummy meals in. The location of the house was absolutely idyllic, sitting on the side of a hill over looking Keswick and Derwent Water.
Gail was very helpful and provided our group with helpful tips on walks to do and places to explore in the area. She even kindly lent us her maps of the area to help us plan our walks.
Gail warned us when we checked in that the wifi was not working very well and she was right, it was intermittent for the duration of our time there. This however turned out to be a positive as we were encouraged to relax and 'switch off'.
Gail was also very accommodating when I forgot to request towels upon booking, and only realised when our group settled into the apartment that I hadn't asked for them. Gail then brought some towels to the apartment and we were able to pay for them at the end of our stay which was very helpful.
Overall we all had a very enjoyable stay and would recommend Irvine apartment at Applethwaite Country House.

About the Host, Gail
I am an energetic and outgoing person and love being in the outdoors, preferably up the side of a mountain! I love cycling, swimming, fell-walking - and reading at the end of a busy day.
I've lived in the Lake District for 20 years now, and haven't once tired of the breathtaking views from the house. My husband and I have travelled all over the world, and love exploring new places and cultures independently, with our rucksacks on our backs. We really enjoy meeting people of all ages.
We have recently become grandparents for the first time and are thoroughly enjoying the time we spend with our little grandson who has bewitched us.
