About this listing
Situated in an idyllic hamlet in the Northern Lake District, on the slopes of England's third highest mountain, the apartment sleeps four in two en-suite bedrooms. Keswick is 1.5 miles away.
The apartment is on the top floor (second floor) of the Victorian house. It has two bedrooms, one of which has views over Keswick and Derwentwater and the other has views over the mature gardens and Bassenthwaite Lake. Each of the rooms has its own TV, radio and hairdryer. There is a cosy, comfortable lounge, a fully equipped kitchen (fridge/freezer, dishwasher, microwave, gas hob and electric oven) and a dining area alongside the kitchen. The apartment has its own private entrance and private parking spaces. You are also welcome to use our wifi.
The apartment is situated within a Victorian Lakeland Country House, set in over two acres of mature gardens, with its own putting course, which provides entertainment for young and old. There are also resident red squirrels and Philip the Pheasant, who enjoy their daily meal of nuts and seed!
In terms of location, we are based in Applethwaite, a small village which is five minutes by car from Keswick, or a 25 minute walk down a beautiful country lane (with magnificent views). It is also very conveniently situated for getting to all areas of the Lake District - e.g. Buttermere is 25 minutes, Grasmere is 20 minutes, Penrith is 20 minutes, and Windermere is 45 minutes away (by car).
Keswick has a wealth of pubs, cafes and restaurants, a cinema and The Theatre by the Lake. It also has lots of shops, including numerous walking shops, should you need to get kitted up. There is also a small bistro less than 5 minutes by foot up the lane.
As the apartment is on the slopes of Skiddaw, the elevated position of the house offers magnificent views over Keswick, Derwentwater, Borrowdale and many famous peaks such as Catbells. Once there it feels as though you're a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
We live onsite and will be there to welcome you and share our local knowledge with you, to help you make the most of your stay here - be that local cafes, art galleries, walking routes, local beer etc! We can help with bike storage and drying facilities if needed.
Many people like to visit this area for a week or more, and we would be happy to discuss a weekly rate. Whilst we've set the minimum stay as 3 nights, if bookings allow we would be happy to consider one or two nights - if this interests you, please get in touch and we'd be happy to discuss.
We absolutely love the corner of the world in which we live, and look forward to welcoming you!
We don't have many house rules, however,
1. On departure, please leave the apartment in the same clean condition as you will find it.
2. Please remove all outdoor shoes indoors so as to ensure that the carpets remain as clean as possible.
3. One small pet is permitted, by prior arrangement. There is a £15 charge for this, to reflect the additional cleaning.
4. No smoking is permitted within the apartment.
The main thing is that you feel relaxed, at home and enjoy your stay!
We really enjoyed our stay at Gail & Tom's wonderful Irvine Apartment. While Gail was away, Tom played the perfect host, showing us around the apartment and making us feel very welcome.
The apartment is huge, clean and well fitted out for a great stay. One of the things that we loved was that it is a little remote, but still only 5 minutes drive to the nearest village. The views are spectacular, even the immediate view over the enormous lawn area where Tom has established a croquet green, putting green and lawn bowls green - we made use of the latter.
Irvine Apartment is the perfect place to stay to explore the Lakes District and we will certainly be recommending it to our friends.
From the moment we arrived and were greeted by Gail we felt relaxed and enjoyed every moment of our stay. So peaceful and welcoming. Gail and Tom were always on hand with extensive knowledge of the area and no question was ever too much.
The climb up the stairs are worth it for the view from every room. And the gardens were just wonderful to wonder and relax in. We loved being just out of town as felt we had a home away from home.
Hopefully we will back again one day. Thanks for making our week so fab Gail and Tom!
We had such a lovely time at Gail's fantastic apartment. There was everything we needed there - including more that Gail provided. Even toys for our toddler - which he loved! The apartment was great and the gardens were beautiful - really lovely for an evening stroll around. Irvine is also in a fantastic location, with Keswick a very short drive away. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Gail and Irvine apartment to anyone.
What a fantastic location. The apartment was beautifully presented and extremely well equipped. Communication from Gail was excellent, directions to the property excellent and a warm welcome awaited us including Jaffa Cakes and a DVD 'Beatrix Potter' to follow up our visit to Home Hill. All in all, a perfect stay.
With an exchange of emails about Irvine, the drive to Keswick, and the beautiful scenery we didn't know how accurate it could have been after a long 7 hour journey. Nevertheless it took our breath away the moment we drove into the apartment. Words couldn't describe how beautiful the view was as we parked up. It looked and felt too good to be true. Irvine was impeccably clean and had a very homely feel within it. We were curious as to how equipped the kitchen would be as we were cooking for ourselves, Gail did mention it being very well equipped which it was. It helped a lot in terms of dishes etc. We couldn't fault the apartment. It was simply beautiful inside and out! We weren't able to meet Gail but we met her husband who made us feel more than welcome. I could not be happier to spend my weekend here with the one I love most with the most beautiful scenery I could have ever imagined.
Exactly as described by our host, Gail. The Irvine is a lovely, large apartment with stunning views. Very well equipped and ideally situated close to Keswick. Highly recommended.
The property was amazing and Gail was very sweet. Our satnav in the rental car kept taking us a long way, and to the wrong place so make sure to follow Gail's directions. One of the rooms smelled a bit of old house and didn't air out with leaving the window open, but we only needed one and enjoyed the room facing the street instead. The two bathrooms are wonderfully modern and clean. The kitchen came in handy, and even better the lounge was wonderful to warm up in after a long hike. The wifi was pretty useless but hopefully the rural Internet service provider can upgrade. We did not find it too much of a bother as we spent most of our time out and about anyway. We really liked this location as it is up high and away from the noise of Keswick.

About the Host, Gail
I am an energetic and outgoing person and love being in the outdoors, preferably up the side of a mountain! I love cycling, swimming, fell-walking - and reading at the end of a busy day.
I've lived in the Lake District for 20 years now, and haven't once tired of the breathtaking views from the house. My husband and I have travelled all over the world, and love exploring new places and cultures independently, with our rucksacks on our backs. We really enjoy meeting people of all ages.
We have recently become grandparents for the first time and are thoroughly enjoying the time we spend with our little grandson who has bewitched us.
