* JANUARY 2015 UPDATE:: Steve and I are just making plans for our April Trip 2015. My son now 14 will have a friend along, so it will be four of us for the week, or possibly 2! With 2 kids it will be a boon to have a full kitchen, that's for sure. We miss Bonaire so much and can't wait to see how our garden and the native trees we planted are coming along, and the springtime birdlife is always lively! We plan to dive, get out to the park, and out to Sorobon beach for a day of windsurfing. They have a fantastic program at Lac Bay, and one of the prettiest beaches I've ever seen. We also love our days at Harbour Village resort, (a two minute drive from the house) beach for snorkeling, sunning, reading under the palm trees and a fancy meal, and some spa time if we feel like it! Since my husband doesn't dive that's his favorite part of the trip. As well as our usual favorite restaurants a ten minute walk away in Kralendijk. Last on the list -- I will update photos of Buttonwood. On our last trip we had framed and hung many new art works inside, but had no time to take new pictures of the newly decorated rooms.
** Please remember that the security at Buttonwood is very good, the house itself is like a safe, with steel bars inside the glass shutters. Please know that this is NOT A GATED COMMUNITY, and is priced accordingly. This is a real neighborhood, living among Bonaireans and other vacationers. It's rural. The people are very nice, the breeze, the sea, the swimming and snorkeling, scuba, and sailing are all close at hand. The relaxed pace, the natural beauty are wonderful, but it is NOT a resort area, though resort areas like Harbour Village are VERY nearby.
*** A SPECIAL PLUS is that the house manager will meet guests at the airport and accompany their transportation to Buttonwood. No chance of getting lost! He will also always be available to address any concerns at any point during your stay. I'll happily answer any questions by email or phone. PLEASE NOTE: House manager will meet you at the airport but he DOES NOT provide transport. He will accompany you to your car rental and to Buttonwood, or your taxi. Thanks! Please feel free to contact me with any questions you have about Buttonwood Cottage and Bonaire.
A charming cottage with a big garden of palms and native trees. Excellent security. Full kitchen, big porch, rinse tanks, and a clothes washer. The town of Kralendijk with nightlife and shopping are only a 10 minute walk away. The sea and fantastic snorkeling and diving are a few minutes walk from the cottage.

We recommend a car or a scooter to see all of Bonaire, but there's plenty of activities within walking distance.

A&B CAR RENTAL will provide transportation to and from the airport when picking up or dropping off a car. You can also take a taxi from the airport and they will deliver the truck or SUV to you at Buttonwood Cottage as per your arrangement (they all know where it is). They are at (phone number hidden) or (email hidden)ere are other car rentals on Bonaire but we recommend A&B for efficiency, price, and cars/trucks that can go all over the island and in the park.
Electricity and Water are very costly on Bonaire, but they are included in the rental price. Please use minimal electricity --- make sure to TURN OFF air conditioners/AIRCO in bedrooms when you aren't in the house. We don't even use the AIRCO at night. It's very pleasant to sleep with all the shutters open and enjoy the nighttime breeze.
Additionally the SHOWER HEATER is an INSTANT POINT-OF-USE HEATER. It must be TURNED OFF, or the heating element will burn out, and it will run up the electric bill as well.
There is no phone at the house. In Kralendijk it's very easy to get a temporary cell phone at Digicel: (phone number hidden), Kaya Grandi #26 or Chippie: (phone number hidden), Kaya Caracas #2.
If you'd like to do laundry, one of the keys opens the gate on the porch where the washer is. There is a line for drying behind the Bamboo porch fence.
Please don’t leave outdoor furniture cushions out overnight, or in the rain, they will take a long time to dry. Thanks!
Please make sure the garden/driveway gate is always closed.
At the end of your stay, please do not leave dirty dishes. Also, please take out the last of your garbage. There is a green garbage can to the left, set into the wall, as you are looking at the house.
TELBO (Internet/TV) First step, turn on white router under TV if it isn’t turned on. Find SSID - TELBO_AE01. The TELBO (Security) KEY for your wifi computer setting - (phone number hidden)
House Manager is: Baasje. Best way to reach him is email: (email hidden) or ph(phone number hidden) or (phone number hidden)
Please know that it is VERY important to lock the house when you aren't there, and put away out of sight, all visible valuables (computers, phones, cameras, jewelry). There are large closets in each bedroom. Also, use the floor “bolt” lock on the sliding door every time you go out.
Don’t forget: CHECK OUT time is 10:00 a.m.
They don't take American Express Credit Cards almost anywhere on Bonaire. Bring your Visa/Mastercard.
Thank you and have a wonderful time in Kralendijk, on the beautiful, peaceful island of Bonaire. We hope that you love it as much as we do!!
The home is delightful! It was clean and had everything we needed. We had reliable internet, a place to rinse and dry our dive gear, all the cooking items we needed and comfortable beds. The neighborhood was quiet except for the crowing roosters which we acclimated to fairly quickly. A very positive experience.
The cottage is wonderful, it has all the amenities you need and the beds are very comfortable. The wash sink outside is an added bonus and makes cleaning up your dive equipment a breeze. The location is great, close to the coast and the main shopping area. The house manager was very helpful and courteous, and always answered our questions promptly. Our only complaint was the chickens. In the two weeks we stayed here we didn't get a single full nights sleep - the roosters in the area would crow right outside the window at all hours of the night! We would even get up and chase them out of the yard at 4am, but they would always just come right back. We met a couple staying a five minute walk away and they had no problems with noisy chickens, next time we will be looking for a quieter location.
Hi Alyssa: Thanks for the nice remarks. We do love our place on Kaya India. We are trying to figure out a solution for the chicken issue, like more fencing. Baasje is addressing this problem right now. It IS a rural neighborhood, and so for all that it offers it is still the deep country part of Bonaire, where they've lived the same way for many years. Also, a short walk to the sea and a lovely spot to boot as you have said. Meanwhile, we're also suggesting that people turn on CAC and shut the bedroom windows at night. Which is against my principles, and very expensive, but better than guests losing sleep on their vacation. Again, we really apologize and are addressing the issue. Thank you for staying with us, Rue and Steve
very nice and sweet apartment. we enjoyed bonaire a lot! theres nothing to complain about the apartment. but there were chicken in
the neighbourhood keeping us awake from 4am.
we like bonaire and we would come again to the buttonwood cottage....after a huge portion of chicken wings ;-)
Hello Anna: Thank you for the comments. We have been telling people to shoo the chicken family out of the garden. They will go after a few tries. I think that's part of the country ambiance of Bonaire, and living in a real neighborhood. I'm sorry for the trouble and glad that you found the rest of your stay enjoyable.
Buttonwood Cottage is in a great location. It was good to be in a neighbourhood with local residents rather than in a bland tourist resort. The cottage is nicely furnished, bright, light, clean and well-equipped. The bed is fabulously comfortable and the garden is getting established and has some lovely trees, which attract all kinds of birds, including emerald hummingbirds. Being in a neighbourhood does have some downsides....one of the neighbours has chickens which roam freely. Several roosters strut around and they crow from the early hours of the morning, right outside. Being from a city we found this very hard to sleep through...we got more used to it over time, but it did disturb us, as did the young boys revving thier motorbikes in the garden back to back with the cottage, after school each atternoon. If you are a diver, the diving on Bonaire is fantastic and the cottage having its own rinse tanks was a bonus.
Hi Rachel: So glad you liked the cottage, we love it too and will spend two weeks there this coming April. Yes, it is a real neighborhood, with all that comes with that. I'm now writing people to shoo the chicken family out of the garden which generally works after a few tries. As for the motorbikes, well, it's a real neighborhood and we've found they don't go on for too long. Also, the location, the garden, the wildlife, and all the comforts of home come at a quite low price. I don't think there's another place on Bonaire that offers all that we do, which is why we are booked almost all the time. Thank you for your comments, and for staying with us.
