Enjoy our cozy den-like guest room with its fireplace, books, king bed, and private bathroom with bath/shower. We're in a peaceful semi-rural neighborhood outside of Charlottesville: 10 minutes to UVA, 15 minutes to historic downtown, 20 minutes to Shenandoah National Park (to the west) or Monticello (to the east). There is no public transit to our neighborhood, but there is good taxi service. We have broadband internet that usually works fine for Netflix.
This is a great location for folks who like some green space. We're convenient not only to Charlottesville, but also to scenic western Albemarle County. Runners and cyclists are particularly fond of this part of the county. If you'd rather exercise indoors, we have a top-of-the-line Precor elliptical machine.
We are early risers (7:00 AM), and though we're not loud you should expect some normal noise in the morning. Your room adjoins our kitchen and living area.
If you let us know what time, we can usually have coffee or tea ready for you when you wake up. Alternately, you can make your own. You are welcome to use the kitchen for light food preparation, and we are open to discussing full kitchen use for guests who are staying more than 2 nights.
We have a dog, Maeve, who may bark when you first arrive. She switches quickly to wanting to be petted.
There are no nightstands by the bed, but there are lights on each side. The room has a writing nook, chest of drawers, and a coat rack on which you can hang your finery.
Our neighborhood is middle class, semi-rural, and quiet. Your room has views of a funky rustic house down the lane, trees, and mountains. This is not, however, pristine countryside. Expect telephone poles and the very occasional hum of a distant lawn mower.
We are friendly and welcoming, and we will see that you have what you need for a comfortable and pleasurable stay. And we're busy with work and all the rest, so we won't be in your way!
Maggie and John were gracious and considerate hosts, and I really enjoyed my stay with them. My only regret would be that I didn't meet Maggie sooner and that we were all, literally, ships passing in the night.
The accommodations are exactly as pictured and, really, the picture doesn't quite do it justice. The room is very spacious with big windows to let in a lot of natural light, a large, comfortable bed and a dresser for your clothing. There's even a little writing nook where you can set up your computer and wifi is provided.
The house is set back in a wooded area a little bit, so if you are even remotely directionally challenged like me, I would definitely recommend arriving in the daytime to orient yourself. The good thing is that the neighbors are friendly and will very politely direct you to Maggie and John's property.
Charlottesville and the UVA campus were my main destinations while I was visiting and it was a short drive (~12m) to get there.
Overall, I would unreservedly recommend them as hosts--they are good people and went out of their way to make me feel comfortable and at-home. If I am ever in the area again, I will definitely stay with Maggie and John. :)
John and Maggie are lovely folks! Super helpful with directions, interesting to converse with, and generous with their home and their breakfast foods! The room is spacious and comfortable and filled with great books, and the 15-20-min drive into town is easy and pretty. I had a great experience. Thanks, John and Maggie!
Maggie and John's place was fantastic in every sense of the word! I met up with an old friend for a long weekend in Charlottesville and this was the perfect home base for us. While we didn't get to meet John (because he was out of town), Maggie and her son were super friendly and accommodating hosts. We had great conversations with Maggie and really enjoyed meeting her.
As for the physical accommodations, the room was very comfortable - and bigger than it looks in the pictures! The fire in the fireplace at night (which Maggie's son made) was nice and cozy. And the bathroom was clean and convenient. I HIGHLY recommend staying here if you are in the Charlotttesville area. I know I will when I come through again!
"Cozy room" definitely describes it spot on! Our stay at John and Maggie's was absolutely perfect. Me and my friend were in Charlottesville for a weekend getaway and could not have chosen a more perfect place to stay. Maggie greeted us with grace and kindness and helped give us suggestions of where we should go for dinner that night and had muffins, fruit, and coffee waiting for us in the morning. Their helpful son, Jack, built us a wonderful fire in the fireplace in our room which we thoroughly enjoyed. I definitely hope to return and would HIGHLY recommend staying in the cozy room with a fireplace :)
Great place. Hosts were warm and welcoming. Excellent king sized bed and a super comfy sofa are the main attractions in this large room with private bath. Very clean but with character. Interesting book collection. Relaxing rural locale. Highly recommended.
The room was as described. The fireplace was a nice extra, we didn't use it but it would certainly make a night there more cozy.
The best part was meeting Maggie and John, it was like meeting old friends that you hadn't seen for a while. They really made us feel welcome and at home.
We saw a couple of deer out of the window while we were having coffee. We would definitely go back if the opportunity arose.
Maggie & John were the most warm, welcoming and hospitable hosts! We loved our Saturday morning breakfast of coffee and pancakes, with such interesting, easy going people and great conversation. It is such a pleasure to have stayed with them. Their house is located just close enough to Charlottesville, but far enough to have a peaceful nights sleep away from it all. Our room and connected bathroom was spacious, clean and super comfortable. We only wish we could have stay longer. Definitely recommended.
Maggie and John were great hosts and super flexible for my last minute booking. Their place is convenient to Monticello, UVA, the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive. I was beat and slept like a rock. I recommend arriving during daylight hours- this semi-rural setting gets dark at night! I found it no problem, though, as Maggie gave great directions.
I wouldnt hesitate to stay again.
