The Neighborhood

L’Eixample - named after the Catalan word for “extension” - is a large district of Barcelona, separating the city from the previously independent surrounding towns. In the mid 19th century, an architectural plan was put into place to expand the then overcrowded old town, by tearing down the ancient walls which had long protected it.

L’Eixample was carefully designed into octagonal blocks, evenly separated by streets and avenues. This district is also considered to be the heart of the Art Nouveau movement, being home to the majority of local artist Gaudí’s works, such as the Sagrada Família Church, quite probably the city’s major icon.

Due to its dimension and central location, this district truly offers anything you could possibly imagine: Shopping, nightlife, parks, unmissable attractions, universities, hospitals and all sorts of public transport options - L’Eixample is a great base for a real slice of the Barcelona experience!
