Easy (3 minutes) walk to a little general store and a local cafe. Very quiet at night and pretty landscaping. Had a fresh pineapple on the counter and Costco muffins in the fridge. Full kitchen and a barbecue on the patio.
Easy access to the volcano - closest spot to stay if you want to visit the top. Fantastic views from nearby parks. Great place to do some non-beach related activities, cool at night. Very reasonable cost. And believe it or not - a fireplace! With wood supplied, the flickering flames were wonderful after the sun went down and the mountain air got a tinge of coolness.
So if you want a quiet, high on the mountain spot to enjoy as a base for visiting Haleakual National Park, or the winery on the south shore, this would be ideal.

My husband and I had a delightful time in Upcountry Maui, and the Kula Cottage was a comfortable and convenient launching site. We really appreciated the coffee, tea, muffins and pineapple waiting for us upon arrival, and a local market and WONDERFUL little restaurant are 3 blocks away. Cecilia made sure that all was well. My favorite part of the cottage was the patio with its beautiful plantings and birdsong. The cottage was small but well-equipped, just as described.
Thank you, Cecilia!
Nice location in Kula, however, not much insulation from the neighbors as this cottage is nestled in the front yard tight to one side. The neighbor to the left was pretty noisy (doing a speakerphone call on the lanai it sounded like), and there were dogs barking. Not inappropriate, but busy/noisy. It all calmed down around 9:30p.
Nice clean cottage. A bit outdated, and devoid of any island feel, but completely serviceable & comfy.
The Gilbert's were awesome hosts, and very supportive when I lost my bracelet.
This was a wonderful place to stay while we explored the upcountry. It's a very short drive to Haleakala (beautiful sunrise), Paia (fantastic fish restaurant), Maui Friday in Makawao, and more. The cottage was very neat, well stocked, and came with a washer/dryer which is a big plus if you have any hiking plans. Cecilia was a wonderful host and made sure we had everything we needed to enjoy our stay.
One thing to note: this is located in a small neighborhood and the neighbors have dogs. While the dogs weren't obnoxiously loud and definitely didn't bark all night, be prepared to hear some occasional noise during the day (just like any other neighborhood). We didn't mind since we spent most of our day out and they were always quiet in the evenings and nights. We would definitely stay here again if we had the opportunity!
What great place to stay to see a completely different side of Hawaii. You get to know the people who work and live on the island. Everywhere I went people were friendly and we're willing to help. I just felt at home in the cottage. If I could have gotten the bed on the plane I would have taken it. This place was extremely quiet and inviting. It had everything I needed to cook or BBQ. My host checked to see if I needed anything, but you rarely same them. The cottage was a bargin. I highly recommend it. Call the school of massage a few miles away. $30.00 dollars plus tip. Great massage.
One of the most quiet places I've ever stayed (for great sleeping!). Very clean and comfortable cottage, just as beautiful as shown in the pictures. There isn't a view here, but the patio is very pleasant. Well stocked! We enjoyed our stay very much, away from the crowds and heat at the lower elevation. Thank you, Cecilia.
Clean, comfortable, charming, and peaceful! The garden is lovely. . . it was so nice to eat outside on the private patio or just relax and enjoy being upcountry in the fresh air. The cottage was well thought out, it is clean, neat, and well stocked with everything you need. . .Not cluttered! There is plenty of space in the closets and cupboards. It is so nice to have a dishwasher, washer and dryer. Cecilia is a gracious host and very respectful. I had a perfectly relaxing time at the Kula Cottage.
We stayed at the cottage in December 2013 and loved our stay. The cottage is very comfortable, kitchen extremely well equipped, very clean, cosy, and our hosts were kind enough to leave some muffins for us! Very well located to see the sunrise at Haleakala. I would stay here again.
Very comfortable place -- the cottage was supplied with everything I needed. The cottage is in a regular neighborhood and there was some ambient neighborhood noise during the day, but it was very quiet at night. Good shower with good water pressure. It also was nice to have a washer and dryer.
The cottage is in a good location. I was able to drive to Haleakala crater in about 50 min and could drive to Baldwin beach in about 20 min.
This was my first Airbnb stay, and it was great. I think Cecilia was away during my stay, but she was easy to reach via text. Would recommend.
The cute little property was perfect for the 2 of us during our stay. It was furnished well, very comfortable & clean and it also provided a convenient base for our various trips out & about in Maui. We would definitely stay there again.
