Hidden Jungle Beach House: where nature lovers can socialize around the kitchen table or enjoy solitude in a quiet spot on a hammock.
You fall asleep to the sound of the waves and wake to the chattering of a million tropical birds.

Hidden Jungle Beach House is a typical Caribbean style wooden house with three levels. The kitchen is on the first floor. The bedrooms are on the second. And the third floor is my room, I'm the owner, Lisa, and I live here, too.

The first floor kitchen is spacious and open, with jungle all around. The grocery store is only a short jaunt away so you can buy what you need and cook it here. The shared bathroom with a hot shower is on the first floor.

The second floor of Hidden Jungle Beach House has four bedrooms and a living room with cable TV. It also has a shared bathroom with a sink and a toilet. The bedrooms are simple and small. Three bedrooms have double beds and one has a single. Each room has a place to hang your clothes, shelves, desk or table and chair, mosquito nets and a fan, along with clean sheets and towels.

We are a simple place: The windows have screens but we use mosquito nets, too; no A/C just fans and jungle breezes. We love animals. We have two German shepherds (and a cat) to guard the house and entertain the guests. Smoking cigarettes is allowed only outdoors in the yard.

Hidden Jungle Beach House is truly Puerto Viejo’s hidden treasure. You’ll love it’s relaxed and friendly vibes. You’ll sleep cozy and comfortable in the arms of mother nature. You’ll wake up to the sounds of howler monkeys, cute little geckos and a million different kinds of colorful birds.

Helpful suggestions on where to go and what to do are provided by your delightful host, me! I have lived on Costa Rica’s Caribbean for almost 7 years and can give you lots of good advice.

If you are looking for a simple, economical place to stay in the quiet tranquility of the jungle but close to all the activity, Hidden Jungle Beach House is the place for you.

Interaction with Guests

I live here, too! I am most always around - accessible for questions or help. When you arrive I give a little tour of the place, showing you where everything is. I am happy to give guidance or recommendations and help you find what you need. I can book your transportation to get here from the airport and I also offer a guide service for the local area.

The Neighborhood

Life in the jungle! Our closest neighbors are sloths, often seen in the trees just outside our windows. Stunning Blue Morpho butterflies and colorful hummingbirds flit by as you sit on the patio. The mornings are chirpy and bright with a million melodic bird songs. Afternoons are quiet and peaceful under the cool of the jungle canopy. And the evenings are exotic with the heady fragrance of jasmine, white ginger and ylang ylang and the curious calls of our nocturnal animal friends. This is truly the place to refresh the mind, nurture the soul and release the stress of everyday living.

Getting around

It is easy to get here. From the airport you can take a bus, a private shuttle, a rental car or you can even take a rafting trip! I'll give you all the details and book your transportation, if you like.

Once you are here you can access most everything on foot or by bike. The public bus system works well and there are taxis at your disposal.

Other Things to Note

DOGS: We have two German Shepherd guard dogs. They are very sweet. They do not bite. But they do bark to protect the property from intruders. When you first arrive they will not know whether or not you are an intruder and they will bark. Before you get here I will ask for your arrival time. When you get here I will be here waiting and I will walk out to greet you and introduce the dogs. Then they will know you and accept you as part of the family for the time you are here. No problem. When you leave and come back, they may bark until they see who you are but just talk to them and they will recognize you. No worries. Most all of my guest love our dogs and the dogs love the guests as well.

  • Lisa is an amazing host. She makes you feel very home and is there for a chat or help but also gives you a lot of space in a very comforting way. The house is an amazing open space that feels a bit like a tree house.
I enjoyed my stay very much and felt very welcome.
    Thank you!

    Response from Lisa:

Thanks Karen. That was very nice of you to say. I really enjoyed having you here. I hope you can come back some day.

  • One of the most unique places I've ever been. Lisa is an amazing host, she'll make you feel like a home and will help you with anything you have to know about Puerto Viejo. I booked my stay because of good reviews, but I was still blown away how much fun I had staying at Lisa's place!

The house is located near the beach, but still hidden inside the jungle that it's very pleasant during nights. Absolutely no worries it being too hot and the distant roar of the ocean and sounds of jungle made me sleep like a baby every night. It was a perfect place to stay, my only complaint is to myself that I didn't stay longer :)

    Response from Lisa:

Hannu you are a real sweetheart! I am so glad you had fun at my place. The other guests were very entertaining while you were here. And yes, my place is unique. I like to keep it that way. It is quite the opposite of the Holiday Inn. Because it is my home I want my guests to feel at home as well. Please do come back!

  • I really enjoyed my stay here. Private room, shared bathroom was never an issue. Lisa was very nice and hospitable, as were the other guests. I didn't hang out at the house very much, but it was a nice place to come back to. My only complaint would be that everyone in the house was up and making a lot of noise before I woke up even though the quiet hours were clearly posted around the house. But I didn't need an alarm clock!

    Response from Lisa:

Thanks for the review, Emily. I enjoyed having you stay here, too. Sorry about people waking you up. The house rule is that people be quiet until 9:00 a.m. out of respect for those who are still asleep. And if I think someone is being too loud I tell them. Sorry it bothered you. I wish you would have mentioned it to me after the first morning and I would have tried to prevent it happening again.

  • My trip was unfortunately canceled due to a confusion with my airline reservations, but I still wanted to give Lisa the stellar rating she deserves just from her contact with me! From the moment I started asking questions and sending inquiries, Lisa was ON IT. She answered all my questions and gave me exactly what I needed to know for my trip. I was extremely saddened not to be able to make her acquaintance, as I could tell from her emails and all communication that she is a wonderful person and host. I hope to be able to make this trip in the next year, as she also told me that she would save my deposit so I could still use it within a year.

    Response from Lisa:

Thanks for the very nice review, even though we did not actually meet in person. It was generous of you to say those nice things. I try very hard to be helpful and efficient. thanks for the appreciation!

  • Lisa is a great host. She kept everything so clean and was kind and helpful with showing me places around her jungle home where I would have a good chance of seeing, photographing, and enjoying the plants and animals. She offered books which helped me learn even more about Costa Rica's plants and animals. I would highly recommend her place as it felt so much like a home. Thank you Lisa! Pura Vida

Thanks Sara. I am glad you felt at home at my place. I love my home and I enjoy sharing it. Do bring your hubby and come back!

  • Lisa was a wonderful host! She was very helpful and shared lots of information about Puerto Viejo and the surrounding areas. Her house was lovely, very clean, and extremely well organized for guests. The kitchen was wonderful, too. It was a very relaxing place to spend my last couple of days in such a beautiful country. I would highly recommend staying in her sweet jungle abode!

Thanks Taj, hope you can come back and visit us again one day - but stay longer!

    Response from Lisa:

Thank YOU, Niclas. Even though your review was brief it was quite complimentary. It makes me happy to know you would have stayed longer if you had not had the urge to explore. And it makes me even happier that you felt well rested and content in my home. Do come back!

  • Lisa not only made my stay a pleasant & memorable experience, she actually made me feel like I was visiting family!!
She even let me take her beautiful sheppards to the beach (alone) with me! This was extremely special because I have a dog tht I was missing and her 2 sheppards helped fill that void.
She also very connected around the Island of Puerto Viejo, so the options of activities were limitless!
I would definitely recommend this extremely affordable & cozy home for anyone who wants to enjoy visit Puerto Viejo!

    Response from Lisa:

Thanks for the very nice review, Nelli. I do hope you can come see us again!

  • From the moment I booked this room, the lines of communication with Lisa were way open. She was incredibly responsive and helpful with the planning of my trip. I arrived and she greeted me warmly, showed me the place, and let me know the rules. The house is in a secluded patch of forest off the main road, and is as cozy and picturesque as it gets. All in all, this spot is quite nice and I would recommend it.

I’m Lisa Valencia, a writer and Costa Rica guide who has lived in Costa Rica’s Caribbean since 2007. I believe in following your dreams and living life to the absolute fullest. I believe in giving without regard to what you get. I try to find the balance between being in the moment and planning for the future. I work on keeping judgment in abeyance. And I am thankful, grateful and appreciative of almost every little thing in every moment of life. One of my greatest feats, since moving to Costa Rica has been that of learning to reinvent myself. In the USA I worked as a mural artist and an interior designer. I’ve continued my art work in Costa Rica, but only to a minor extent. To my own surprise my creativity took a turn to the literary, as I recounted my Costa Rica new life experiences to my friends. In September of 2009, I wrote a book about my first two years in Costa Rica, coming here as a woman alone. My book, “If She Can Do It, So Can I!” is available on my website as an AUDIO BOOK an EBOOK and the paperback version is available from Amazon. My love for literacy and language sparked another idea. I became certified to teach English as a second language and taught locally for a year. As my writing continued it stimulated more reinvention. Due to readers extensive inquiries about Costa Rica living, I developed a Guide Service and a Consultation Service for those interested in Costa Rica. Three years ago life brought another new way to share my Costa Rica experiences and to reinvent myself. I am the happy owner of a sweet little guest house in the jungle. Although I carry on my guiding and consultation, my realm of service has extended to providing lodging at Hidden Jungle Beach House. It seems things have come full circle. My book was written to inspire others to believe in themselves and follow their dreams. Now I can help those who dream of travel to Costa Rica by providing guidance and an economical place to start their own adventure.
