The space

Tranquil Jungle Setting, surrounded by nature...
Only 4 rooms - no more than 8 people to share the public space. The rooms are SMALL but comfortable. Breakfast is not provided.

At Hidden Jungle Beach House we have ROOMS FOR SINGLES and COUPLES. THIS PAGE IS THE LISTING FOR SINGLES. The other Hidden Jungle Beach House is the listing for couples.

Immerse yourself in nature in this tranquil, jungle hide-away, just a 3 minute walk to a breathtaking beach, Playa Negra. Enjoy peace and quiet, yet have access with a 5 minute walk, to the charming town of Puerto Viejo, - cute shops, great restaurants and and a lively night life.

Hidden Jungle Beach House: where nature lovers can socialize around the kitchen table or enjoy solitude in a quiet spot on a hammock.
You fall asleep to the sound of the waves and wake to the chattering of a million tropical birds.

Hidden Jungle Beach House is a typical Caribbean style wooden house with three levels. The kitchen is on the first floor. The bedrooms are on the second. And the third floor is my room, I'm the owner, Lisa, and I live here, too.

The first floor kitchen is spacious and open, with jungle all around. The grocery store is only a short jaunt away so you can buy what you need and cook it here. The SHARED BATHROOM with a hot shower is on the first floor.

The second floor of Hidden Jungle Beach House has four SMALL bedrooms and a living room with cable TV and an outdoor porch. It also has a SHARED BATHROOM with a sink and a toilet. The bedrooms are simple and small. Three bedrooms have double beds and one has a single. Each room has a place to hang your clothes and shelves, desk or table, screened windows and a fan, along with clean sheets and towels.

We are a simple place: The windows have screens; NO AIR CONDITIONING just fans and jungle breezes. We love animals. We have two German shepherds (and a cat) to guard the house and entertain the guests. Smoking cigarettes is allowed only outdoors in the yard.

Hidden Jungle Beach House is truly Puerto Viejo’s hidden treasure. You’ll love it’s relaxed and friendly vibes. You’ll sleep cozy and comfortable in the arms of mother nature. You’ll wake up to the sounds of howler monkeys, cute little geckos and a million different kinds of colorful birds.

Helpful suggestions on where to go and what to do are provided by your delightful host, me! I have lived on Costa Rica’s Caribbean for 8 years and can give you lots of good advice.

If you are looking for a simple, economical place to stay in the quiet tranquility of the jungle but close to all the activity, Hidden Jungle Beach House is the place for you.

Interaction with guests

I am Lisa, the owner, and I live here in Hidden Jungle Beach House with my husband, Christian. We are most always around - accessible for questions or help.

I'm a writer with a website telling you all about my experiences living in Costa Rica for seven years. I'll give you all the details on your options to get here from the airport, along with photos and instructions. I can book your transportation and I also offer personal guide service. Once you have made your reservation, Airbnb will allow me to give you the link to my website.

When you arrive we'll show you around the house. And I am happy to give guidance or recommendations and help you find what you need.

The neighborhood

Life in the jungle! Our closest neighbors are sloths, often seen in the trees just outside our windows. Stunning Blue Morpho butterflies and colorful hummingbirds flit by as you sit on the patio. The mornings are chirpy and bright with a million melodic bird songs. Afternoons are quiet and peaceful under the cool of the jungle canopy. And the evenings are exotic with the heady fragrance of jasmine, white ginger and ylang ylang and the curious calls of our nocturnal animal friends. This is truly the place to refresh the mind, nurture the soul and release the stress of everyday living.

Getting around

It is easy to get here. From the airport you can take a bus, a private shuttle, a rental car or you can even take a rafting trip! I can give you all the details and book your transportation.

We are a 1 minute walk from the beach and a 5 minute walk to the town of Puerto Viejo. You can access most everything on foot or by bike. The public bus system works well and there are taxis at your disposal. There is also a local car rental.

Other things to note

IF YOU HAVE A CAR: If you are coming by car, please let me know at the time you make your reservation. Parking is limited so I have to make sure there is space for you. Thanks!

DOGS: We have one cat and two German Shepherd guard dogs. They are very sweet. The dogs do not bite. But they do bark to protect the property from intruders. When you arrive the dogs and cat will greet you as part of the family. Most all of my guests love our pets and the pets love the guests as well. Our dogs are not allowed inside the house. They stay in the yard and sleep on the ground floor outdoor patio. The patio is a a central part of our place, with chairs and a hammock for our guests. And most are happy to share the space with the dogs. We bathe and brush the dogs regularly and do our best to keep the patio clean. Our dogs are well trained and essential for the security or our property. IF YOU DO NOT LIKE DOGS, OUR HOME MAY NOT BE THE BEST CHOICE FOR YOUR VISIT.

NOISE: We are in the jungle yet 1 minute from the beach and only 5 minutes from the town of Puerto Viejo. You'll always hear the waves. And now and then, especially on weekends and holidays you'll hear the sounds of the village coming through the jungle - music from the bars and some traffic on the road.

There are NO LAUNDRY FACILITIES available here, however there are lines to hang wet clothes. And there is laundry service available nearby.

Lisa and Christian are very nice people but i found their place a bit smaller for my taste, therefore maybe there are also so many rules, but no worries even if you forget some you can always find them attached to the walls! :)

I had a wonderful stay at Hidden Jungle Beach House. Lisa was very helpful and accommodating. She was exceedingly helpful with travel arrangements to and from her place. Her communication was always prompt. Christian was also helpful and friendly. HJBH is clean and quiet. Yet it is also a very short easy walk into Puerto Viejo. And, of course, the beautiful Playa Negra is just steps away from the front gate. Lisa's signage throughout makes it easy to share the common areas with other travelers. Her suggestions for excursions and explorations were very useful.

I had a great time at Lisa and Christian's place. I moved here after not sleeping for 2 nights in town due to a dog barking from 2am-6am! (Staying in town can be noisy). I found my room at Lisa's to be cozy, quiet and had everything I needed. The kitchen is well equipped (even has a blender!), it's one block from the edge of town but set back so it's nice a quiet and feels secluded. I stayed here nearly 2 weeks and rented a bike, which was perfect for around getting everywhere I needed (particularly the beaches further south). I highly recommend it. Lisa and Christian are always there to answer questions you might have. You will be living in close quarters with the hosts, as they stay in a room above the guests and everyone shares all the rooms (bath, kitchen, common etc), but they are super accommodating and work hard to make sure you have a wonderful stay. I would def stay here again next time i'm in Puerto Viejo. Oh, and their dogs are awesome. Ironically, I had to stay at a house WITH dogs to not hear barking dogs, and get a great night sleep haha! :D

Staying with Lisa and Christian was perfect for our trip to Puerto Viejo. Lisa was so quick to respond to inquiries and helpful in booking our travel to and from town. She even found me a shuttle that would take me to Arenal before I came to Puerto Viejo. That was over and above the call of duty of a host. I really appreciated it. Christian was so helpful in showing us the wildlife in their backyard. He was also very patient with my broken Spanish, teaching me the correct way of saying things. Their place is lovely. It was smaller than I expected, but certainly ample size for what we needed. If I make my way back to Puerto Viejo I will certainly stay with them again!

Lisa's place is exactly as advertised. There were zero negative surprises. She was professional and precise in all her communications before I arrived, very welcoming, courteous and highly communicative when I arrived and during my stay. The grounds were secure and the neighborhood quiet. Lisa happily shared her extensive knowledge of local restaurants and other attractions. I was very pleased with my stay and would book there again in a heartbeat.

My experience at Lisa's was exactly what I needed. The description on her listing is as you will find it: a peaceful jungle dwelling just steps from the beach. I'm a PhD student finishing my dissertation and needed a place that was both quiet but comfortable, with easy access to restaurants, grocery stores, cafes with wifi, etc. This was the perfect place. It's definitely cozy! I loved all the myriad places to sit, including the open-air kitchen. A few sloth sightings to boot! Kaya's Place & Brewery across the street was a nice place to sit and write, drink a beer, and look at the beach as well. I chose to walk into town via the beach every day. Love Puerto Viejo and would happily stay with Lisa again. :)

I’m Lisa Valencia, a writer and Costa Rica guide who has lived in Costa Rica’s Caribbean since 2007. I opened Hidden Jungle Beach House in 2011, running my guest house alone for 3 years. Then Cristian Montenegro came into my life and has been working with me here for the past three years. We got married in November 2016. So now at our place you have two hosts - one North American and one Nicaragua/Costa Rican.

We both believe in following our dreams and living life to the absolute fullest. And always encourage others to do the same. Many of our guests come here looking for more than a vacation. They use their time here in nature, away from the stress of the "civilized" world to ponder and reflect on their choices in life. Some go back to their lives with renewed energy and enthusiasm. Some discover a new way to live. And some don't go back at all!

Cristian and I are thankful, grateful and appreciative of every aspect of our life here - including our guests. Cristian will show you sloths and iguanas in the trees around the property. He'll tell you stories about the little agoutis who come eat our compost and the time we had a snake for a neighbor. I'll share the story of my discovery of a new life in Costa Rica. And I look forward to hearing your story and encouraging your Costa Rica dreams to come true!
