About this listing
A romantic attic in a mansion renovated with charm. Quiet surroundings just 30 min. the center of Bilbao and Vitoria 35. You can put two extra beds. We live in the house and rent two more rooms.
If you want to know the Basque Country, have a spacious double room, attic, in our house, Utopia.
Utopia is a three-floor mansion, country style, completely renovated and modernized in 2002. It has a nice garden to relax, sunbathe or read in one of our hammocks, and two porches to sit on the afternoon to enjoy the tranquility or even have a drink or dinner.
The room is on the second floor and has a window and a skylight high brightness. The mansard roof is very high, so that its bottom is over two meters. It is furnished with a double bed of 1.5 m. wide, a writing desk, a chair, a loveseat, a wooden antique wardrobe and a chest of four large drawers. We do not have air conditioning because the thick walls keep the house cool even on the hottest days of summer. For winter we do have heating in all rooms, while the winters are mild in Amurrio.
The bathroom, with two sinks, toilet, bidet, shower and bathtub, is shared with other room in the same floor. Also on the same floor there is a spacious living room, and a space with a table, a fridge, microwave, toaster and kettle to prepair a simple breakfast.
Guests can hire the breakfast, lunch and dinner (family kitchen and home) apart from the room. If you prefer, guests can also buy your own food and use the kitchen and the dining room of the house, respecting the rules of the house
The house is very large and we have more rooms, please contact us if you need more space or attic room is busy in the days that interest you.
We are in Amurrio (Alava), a town of 10,000 inhabitants located strategically in the green heart of the Basque Country. Only half an hour by car, train or bus to Bilbao, where the famous Guggenheim Museum, but also many other places like the walk of Abandoibarra with Isozaki towers, skyscraper Iberdrola recently opened or bridge Hanging joining the nearby towns of Getxo and Portugalete, built by Gustave Eiffel.
At half an hour also to the center of Vitoria-Gasteiz, the administrative capital of the autonomous region of the Basque Country, a lovely city in which it is worth visiting the medieval town, the green ring around it (and this year has won the proclamation as European Green Capital) or construction of the Cathedral of St. Mary, mentioned in the blockbuster "The Pillars of the Earth" by Ken Follett.
At less than an hour is the Basque coast, with towns such as Mundaka and its estuary, a Biosphere Reserve by Unesco, and one of the best places in the world for surfing.
San Sebastian, "the beautiful Easo", is just over an hour, with its famous beaches of La Concha and Gros, its old part, the Kursaal Congress Palace, etc. At approximately the same distance is too Pamplona.
Not forgetting the charms of our own region, the Valle de Ayala, where we can find small medieval towns as Orduña or Artziniega, and natural wonders as the birth of Nervión canyon, a waterfall in the river falls to few meters of his birth by a gap of almost two thousand feet. If you enjoy hiking, there are several excursions you can make out from the home, or in the nearby areas or Sierra Garobel Gorbea, both spectacular.
The house is fully equipped and has a spacious garden and two porches available to guests. Parking, wireless internet, telephone, central heating and fireplace in winter.
In summer the air conditioning is not necessary, since the thick walls keep the interior cool even on the hottest days.
Breakfast is not included in the price.
For guests who request it the night before last, we serve a great breakfast at a very affordable price, with coffee, tea or chocolate milk, toast, butter and homemade jam and a piece of fruit. In summer breakfast on the back porch, and in winter by the fireplace. Most of our guests appreciate this service so much, and some even bought us jam jars as souvenirs.
Guests can use the kitchen, in consultation beforehand not to interfere with the normal running of the house.
Interaction with Guests
Utopia is the house in which we live and in which I (Pablo) work every day in my office. We are therefore available for a query or problem virtually anytime.

Amurrio is a quiet town of 10,000 inhabitants, with all necessary services, shops, sports facilities (a magnificent public swimming pool in summer) and several great restaurants.
Our street is on the outskirts, 7 min. walk from the center, in a quiet semi-rural area and no noise.
It is a magnificent setting for trekking lovers, with several routes that can be started from the house or within 30 minutes drive.
It's a great headquarters to visit the Basque Country making day trips to Bilbao (30 min.), Vitoria (30 min.), San Sebastian (70 min.), Pamplona (70 min.), Santander (70 min.) , La Rioja (70 min.) or Burgos (70 min.).
Our house is a ten minute walk from the train station, with trains every half an hour, with a 35 min. trip to the center of Bilbao.
Also 10 minutes away is the bus stop to Vitoria, with numerous daily trips with a journey time of approximately 40 min.
Communications with Bilbao Airport are easy by train and bus.
If you are planning to visit the coast and San Sebastián, the best is to rent a car.
Other Things to Note
We know very well our area and we like our guests to enjoy. We love to help them make the best plans according to their interests, proposing cultural itineraries or to see the most interesting and spectacular places, giving clues about the best places to eat or even providing maps for trekking routes nearby.
Utopia is the house where our family lives.
The house rules are thus the same as we do for the guests, and that can be summarized in a friendly respect for others and their privacy, independence, willingness to help, do not disturb, etc.
We ask our guests to respect the maximum public areas, avoiding monopolize them and leaving them clean and tidy after use. This rule is especially important with respect to the shared bathrooms on the ground floor and the second floor, where we ask that guests do not leave their personal effects.
The guests' belongings (bags of food, bags, shoes, etc.) must be kept inside the room, not in public areas. Contact us if you have bikes or other sports equipment, you can save quietly in the garage.
The room cleaning is done before each new guest, or once a week, like the change of sheets and towels. If it is necessary to do it before, just tell us. It is also possible to hire the daily cleaning of the room at an agreed rate.
In the rooms inside the house you can not smoke. That they are the garden and porches where easily find an ashtray;).
Our house has a unique cuisine, which we use in our daily lives. In this kitchen also we prepare breakfast for guests and we requested.
In our immediate environment there are several good restaurants that we can recommend to our guests for lunch or dinner, where we can also manage the reservation if we are asked.
In the living room adjacent to the room there is a small refrigerator to store food and a kettle to make coffee or tea, and a set of cups to prepare a simple breakfast.
When a group of guests want to use the kitchen to prepare your meals, you should consider the following rules:
1. We ask guests to let us know in advance when they intend to use the kitchen. So we avoid interference with normal family use, or use by other guests.
2. The kitchen is used in turns, avoiding the occurrence of two groups at the same time using it. If it is occupied, you have to wait for the previous group to finish cooking and cleaning.
3. For this reason, we ask guests to planify their use, and avoid monopolizing the kitchen, and leave it free and usable as soon as possible.
4. Once a group has finished cooking, should wash used utensils, dry it and leave it in its place again, and clean countertops and properly remove waste and garbage.
5. Guests can use the plates, glasses and silverware that will indicate to them and condiments such as salt, spices, oil, etc, when we request it.
6. We provide a tablecloth and napkins paper if guests request we needed.
7. Using the dishwasher is unique to the family. Guests must wash, dry and store the crockery used immediately after eating (or as access to the kitchen). For this feature soap, washing utensils and cloths for drying.
8. Both before and after cooking, food should not be stored in the refrigerator or pantry kitchen. There is a fridge for it in the living room adjacent to the room.
9. We ask our guests to not leave food or drinks in the fridge when they leave the room, to avoid creating problems of space or expired food. If you are not going to throw them out and do not want, you can leave them in the kitchen.
Très belle chambre dans une maison de caractère. Nous avons aussi apprécié le coin repas et détente mis à notre disposition. Pablo nous a très bien accueilli et était de bon conseil.
Nous recommandons cette adresse
Basically Pablo's Utopia mansion is drop dead gorgeous. If you have a car and you're visiting Basque, you'd be crazy not to stay here. Everything is decorated in a tasteful manner, spotless clean, comfortable, and has a lot of details that make you feel like you're in a professionally managed boutique hotel or even better! Pablo was super friendly, very knowledgable giving us a lot of recommendations (we went to Zumaia, Getaria, Zarautz per his recommendation and they were absolutely amazing!), and oh the breakfast! It's a must if you stay here! We were too sad to leave after a short stay but we'll be back. Thank you Pablo and family for hosting us. You're great ambassadors for the Basque Country!
Fantastic house and Pablo was the perfect host, every detail has been thought of and I had a delicious breakfast. Pablo even came to find me after my flight was delayed late at night and I got lost. Great guy.
Pablo was the perfect host. We were given a warm welcome and were given information on a spectacular walk. We only stayed one night but the house and garden are well worth a visit.
