If you want to know the Basque Country, have a spacious double room, attic, in our house, Utopia.
Utopia is a three-floor mansion, country style, completely renovated and modernized in 2002. It has a nice garden to relax, sunbathe or read in one of our hammocks, and two porches to sit on the afternoon to enjoy the tranquility or even have a drink or dinner.
The room is on the second floor and has a window and a skylight high brightness. The mansard roof is very high, so that its bottom is over two meters. It is furnished with a double bed of 1.5 m. wide, a writing desk, a chair, a loveseat, a wooden antique wardrobe and a chest of four large drawers. We do not have air conditioning because the thick walls keep the house cool even on the hottest days of summer. For winter we do have heating in all rooms, while the winters are mild in Amurrio.
The bathroom, with two sinks, toilet, bidet, shower and bathtub, is shared with one of the inhabitants of the house (our son). On the same floor there is also a spacious living room.
Guests can hire the breakfast, lunch and dinner (family kitchen and home) apart from the room. If you prefer, guests can also buy your own food and use the kitchen and the dining room of the house.
The house is very large and we have more rooms, please contact us if you need more space or attic room is busy in the days that interest you.
We are in Amurrio (Alava), a town of 10,000 inhabitants located strategically in the green heart of the Basque Country. Only half an hour by car, train or bus to Bilbao, where the famous Guggenheim Museum, but also many other places like the walk of Abandoibarra with Isozaki towers, skyscraper Iberdrola recently opened or bridge Hanging joining the nearby towns of Getxo and Portugalete, built by Gustave Eiffel.
At half an hour also to the center of Vitoria-Gasteiz, the administrative capital of the autonomous region of the Basque Country, a lovely city in which it is worth visiting the medieval town, the green ring around it (and this year has won the proclamation as European Green Capital) or construction of the Cathedral of St. Mary, mentioned in the blockbuster "The Pillars of the Earth" by Ken Follett.
At less than an hour is the Basque coast, with towns such as Mundaka and its estuary, a Biosphere Reserve by Unesco, and one of the best places in the world for surfing.
San Sebastian, "the beautiful Easo", is just over an hour, with its famous beaches of La Concha and Gros, its old part, the Kursaal Congress Palace, etc. At approximately the same distance is too Pamplona.
Not forgetting the charms of our own region, the Valle de Ayala, where we can find small medieval towns as Orduña or Artziniega, and natural wonders as the birth of Nervión canyon, a waterfall in the river falls to few meters of his birth by a gap of almost two thousand feet. If you enjoy hiking, there are several excursions you can make out from the home, or in the nearby areas or Sierra Garobel Gorbea, both spectacular.
Pablo is a WONDERFUL host. He is so hospitable and we felt so welcome at this wonderful house, He really tried to make us feel good and help with everything we needed. He is very organized, so we had a great map printed out for us and gave us a great suggestion for dinner - that we enjoyed a lot.
The room is spotless clean , fresh white sheets, clean bathroom, wi fi and everything you need - it is there - better than in hotel. But what is better at Pablo's house than in any hotel is his hospitality . Him and his wife are so nice and we really enjoyed talking to them and found out we had many common interests. I wish we stayed longer but that was our last night in Spain and we had to leave early this wonderful host and his family and beautiful house.
THe location is great , it is very peaceful and beds are super comfy, so you can really rest and enjoy Basque country fully.
Thanks so much Pablo for having us. We would return in a heartbeat, if there was just more vacation time :)))
Our experience in Pablo's house was wonderful. Very nice room and a breakfast that makes your waking up a pleasant one. The house is amazing and Pablo is a perfect host. He can make you feel very welcome and is always wiling to help you with good suggestions.
It contributed to a perfect weekend...
Gracias a Pablo.
Pablo and Lurdes are fantastic hosts and Friends. Utopia, their home is a really great getaway, not only near to Bilbao but near to Victoria and La rioja too. A home away from home, words can't describe how they make me feel so at home at such a short time. I had home-made breakfast, Lunch and dinner, and they were delicious! The hike we went together was a great area and beautiful balcony of the region! Thank you so much! Highly recommended.
Aconsejo sinceramente la casa de Pablo y Lourdes, ademas de hacerme sentir como en casa son unas personas excepcionales y la casa un 10.
You should stay here. Pablo and his family are so warm and welcoming. The accommodations are tasteful and very cosy. If you are by car it is a 30 minute train to the city. Our host provided good information about what to see and do. We wish we could have stayed longer.
Excellent stay at Pablo's house, he is an excellent host and made me feel at home, he is also a great encyclopedia for local knowledge of places to visit and see. His b&b is a charming renovated farm house with all the mod cons away from the main road which makes it a secluded and tranquil place, I stayed on a lovely room that is more like an apartment separated from his living quarters, so I felt like I was at my own flat. Met his charming wife and son and the household pets (friendly cat and dog). Do intend to visit Bilbao once again and a revist is definitely on the cards, highly recommended b&b, 5 fully deserved stars.
Pablo and his family were great, they have everything set for guests to have a relaxing, trouble-free stay.
Amurrio is a very nice quiet town not far from Bilbao, within a 30 minute train ride.
Overall, great place plus great people! Highly recommended!
Pablo and Lurdes are very welcoming hosts. They have plenty of tips on things to do in the region and Pablo can explain it all in spotless English. The house is huge and the guestroom is also spacious and comfortable.
Don't hesitate to have diner there... these guys really know how to cook!
We'd love to go back one day.
Pablo's house was incredibly beautiful and the room very comfortable. We went on a drive up the mountain and on a great walk through the national park. Had a lovely meal in the nearby town Orduna. We had a lovely breakfast at Pablo's the next morning. Would really recommend at staying at Utopia to anyone, the local area is very tranquil and is also close to both Bilbao and San Sebastian. Thank you Pablo!
