The Space

This house is in a prime location. Right at the beach with sea views and mountain views. Located between the nature reserve 'Serra do Mar' and the Atlantic Ocean. The Serra do Mar is a very special forest with waterfalls and other surprises. In this area, the beach front exhibits a fascinating variety. More than 30 different beaches are within day-trip reaching distance, from small secluded to grande and wide with dense Brazilian tourism; from calm sea for swimming to picturesque fishing bays to wilde surfing spots. Boats can take you to the islands close by as well for snorkeling or diving.

The house itself is located in a quiet spot (well during peak times, there can be parties though at the bars on the beach). The ocean here is calm and the beach is mostly empty. Inviting for a swim, walk or some exercise. A small river is close by, cutting the upper end of the beach off unless you feel adventureous enough to wade through the river in order to expore the natural and unpopulated beach behind. However, the area features some small local shops and you will be able to purchase everything you need for your holiday - in walking distance! Including bars and the famous Brazilian breakfast bread rolls - fresh from a bakery nearby. Now - the typical Brazilian would volunteer to get the rolls in the morning and stop over at the bakery for a chat and cafezinho, the famous Brqazilian short coffee.

The centre of Ubatuba is in walking distance as well. Offering an uncountable number of eating-out opportunities (well I have not managed to count them yet). Also, shops, bars, cafes, a small airport, a fresh fish market, banks, nightlife, open-air concerts, etc. etc. Ubatuba is THE holiday destination for the better-off people from Sao Paulo. You will not find many foreign tourists here. So, you will be fully exposed to the Brazilian culture!

Not many Brazilians speak English. You will probably find more that speak German. However, Brazilians are very friendly and curious people. They are used to speaking with their hands and their mimic. So, don't worry. Many bars and restaurants have got English menus. The house and most bars have got WiFi

For trips by car, you can use the Brazilian equivalent of the 'Highway One'. This stretches from Santos through Ubatuba to Rio de Janeiro - and further. I recommend visiting Parati, located between Ubatuba and Rio. You can reach this small and picturesque town filled with art by following the Brazilian 'Highway One' along the ocean and through the 'jungle', which feels like nature wants to eat you.

The house is simple and clean - typical Brazilian style for this area. It has a BBQ area, an outside terrace on first floor and a large solario (sunbathing terrace on second floor) with stunning views! The house is garded by a lovely lady, who can look after you and your belongings if required. I personally think that no 'typical tourist' location like Rio de Janeiro or Santos can beat a holiday in this local tourism spot - still a secret location to foreigners.

  • The house is spacious and has a great location facing the beach. During the day there are many people at the beach and at the small bars but in the evening everyone goes downtown (30 min walking or 5 with a taxi). But it's quiet at night and there are no restaurants nearby. It's not the nicest beach in Ubatuba but we stayed there all the time because it was so convenient to go home in between!! Make sure to buy some amnesties before arriving (toilet paper, soap etc) as there is nothing in the house and no supermarkets nearby. But all together I recommend the house. We were a couple of friends who rented it and we had a good time :)

    Response from Dennis:

Thank you for the feedback Aida. There are many different beaches in and around Ubatuba. The beach in front of the house is good for swimming and has clean water. I think it is good for kids as well. Other beaches do offer other features and often other disadvantages. It is a question of taste I guess.

Most Brazilians go for a shopping trip first thing when they arrive at the house - or even before. I appreciate that this is different in other countries. So, sorry - I should have known better ;) In future, I will make sure that we have some essentials in the house when guests arrive... There is a supermarket, a bakery and a pharmacy, etc. in walking distance from the house. Maybe I should draw a map for future guests!?

I am glad you enjoyed your time!

  • Estuvimos un día alojados aquí y la experiencia fue muy satisfactoria. La casa es muy grande, tal como aparece en las fotos, con una zona de barbacoa bastante amplia. Está justo enfrente de la playa. Muy recomendable.

  • English: Dennis' house in Ubatuba is an excellent option to spend your vacations near Sao Paulo city. His house is located in Pereque-Açu beach which is a bay with very calm waves, so we took our 2-year old girl and everything was perfect, no need to worry about taking your young kids there. The house is very clean, very well equipped and you just have to walk across the street to reach the beach, it's wonderful! Besides of that, Elena who takes care of the place is a very nice person, she will make sure that you feels like home during your stay. The house has 3 rooms with one being at the ground level, perfect if you have babies, seniors or a person with acessibility needs in your party. I can spend more time here writing about the home, the host and the city, but I will summarize saying that we plan to get back there soon, it's a wonderful place and Dennis is a great host.

  • We stayed at the Ubatuba house for one week. The house is nice and pretty clean but very basic. It has a nice yard and grilling facilities in the back. The location is not very nice but you are a short drive away from amazing beaches.

  • This House is perfect, we had a really great time there. We already knew Ubatuba and the surroundings and we felt immediately at home there.
The sea right across the street, the bbq in the backyard and a big fridge to keep delicious fruits and beverages cold... this is holiday!
The housekeeper and her family are really nice and open for any question we might have. Unfortunately I could not speak to them because I do not speak Portugese...
This house is certainly a place we would rent again if we were to be in Ubatuba!

  • A group of us from Australia stayed here for one week during Carnival 2013. The house was in an idyllic location, directly opposite the beach. The town centre was a short 5 minute taxi ride. I would definitely recommend this beach house and location if you're going to Brazil.

  • The house is great value compared with alternative places to stay. It is so close to the beach that you can walk out the front door and literally within seconds be in the water swimming. It is well located - we had a car but you could walk from the house to the old centre of Ubatuba (Pistache ice cream shop and Bardolino restaurant) in about 35 minutes. In the other direction the lovely Praia Vermelha do Norte beach is about 10 minutes by car and beyond that there are some even more beautiful beaches surrounded by native forest. It is great having a housekeeper in the building in front of the house. A bird with a broken wing was trapped on the roof terrace - the housekeeper took care of the bird and nursed it back to health. It was a very memorable stay.
