Consider our newly renovated, private, and sunlit walk-down apartment an alternative to hotels and guesthouses in Seattle!
We live in a duplex apartment on a quiet street in the Central District of Seattle. The apartment is quite unique yet contemporary in design. We live in the upstairs apartment while we rent out the sunlit walk-down apartment with private entry below us. The Central District is the heart of this beautiful city. A 45 minute walk west leads you to downtown Seattle and the waterfront of the Puget Sound. A 15 minute walk southwest leads you to the vibrant neighborhood of the International District. A 30 minute walk north puts you at the cultural hub of Seattle that is Capitol Hill. A 30 minute walk downhill leads you to the shores of beautiful Lake Washington. A 30 minute walk northeast puts you among the 40,000 trees in the lush Arboretum and Japanese gardens. A few blocks from our house you will find clear views of the majestic Mount Rainier and the glistening Lake Washington. Find yourself on a high point and look west or east and you will have picturesque views of the Cascade and the Olympic Mountains. The Central District, where we live, is a vibrant neighborhood of all ages and types of folks. You will find tree lined streets with wide sidewalks and beautiful gardens. Not even a block from our house is a large park with barbecues, courts, and innovative play structures. This neighborhood is a food oasis with the best Ethiopian food, small-batch gourmet ice cream, comfort food, premier cupcakes, locally roasted coffee, and many cafes and bars.
We are renting the studio-like, sunlit walk-down apartment with separate entry directly below our apartment to short-stay visitors. There is one bedroom with a queen sized bed and large window with a plastic, accordion-type separation door that opens to a living area with a twin sized futon and small window. We provide all bedding and towels. There is a kitchen for light cooking with mini refrigerator, freezer, toaster oven, and stove; no full oven nor microwave. We provide pots and pans, basic cooking utensils, dinnerware, silverware, Keurig coffee maker, coffee, tea, and kettle. One bathroom with shower, toilet, and vanity (no bath tub). All of these amenities will be private to you as we have our own upstairs. The entry is to our back yard, so you may come and go as you please. It is a walk-down apartment with an indoor stairwell that leads to available unit. There is a locked door at the top of the stairwell that leads to our unit. The area is spare in design and ideal for guests seeking a cozy, private space to get great sleep in support of their Seattle adventures. We have many brochures and maps to help you choose from the many exciting things Seattle has to offer. Guests staying with us have access to our secluded and fenced back garden that we share with our friendly neighbor and their two dogs. Amenities include wireless internet and satellite television. Due to the walk-down stairs, the apartment is unfortunately not wheelchair accessible.
We unfortunately cannot accept pets in our rental.
The apartment is directly below the apartment shared by a couple (us!) and our friendly, elderly dog. The building is old and creaky floors are present, though we try to be as considerate as possible. We have ample experience traveling in the Northwest and assisting with itinerary creation, so if our visitors are keen for advice on what to see or where to go, we would be happy to help. Our backgrounds are in photography, vintage design, cooking, gardening, and urban arts.
We look forward to hosting you in our lovely home! Please do contact us if you have any questions.
To make sure this is the right fit for you, please carefully read our House Manual and our House Rules before booking.
We like to give our guests privacy as the space is private to you, but are readily available if you need anything. I try to be as prompt as possible to respond to all e-mail, texts, and calls.
This is an urban, residential area right in the center of this beautiful, international city. It is central to pretty much all that you will want to do along with plenty of free street parking. Our space is best for the adventurous and laid-back traveler.
We live blocks from bus lines 8 and 27.
We had a really enjoyable stay at Shelby and Dan's apartment. They were friendly and approachable and gave us some great local advice on things to see (Alki beach) and places to eat both in their neighbourhood and in the city. The apartment is clean and comfortable and the kitchen is well set up. The location is very handy to public transport into Seattle city centre. Recommended - we'd happily stay there again!
The little apartment that Shelby has is adorable. It is super clean and modern, and it is very cozy. Everything is provided- I didn't even need to pack coffee. The neighborhood was quiet with really cute houses, and there is a small park at the end of the street- 2 houses down- and they are just a quick car ride to just about every feature attraction. She was very helpful on how to travel around Seattle, and what to see. She was sweet and the place was way worth the money. I obviously picked the right place. Thank you, Shelby.
We really enjoyed staying at Shelby's basement apartment! The decor was so cute -- very retro! And we felt safe in the area. It's centrally located and easy to get to. We were able to meet both Shelby and Dan and they were so nice and curious about our weekend and more than willing to give tips on where to go and places to eat. I was actually in town for a half marathon and Shelby was incredibly thoughtful and offered heating pads, a foam roller, and some aleve after my race! She definitely went above and beyond as a host and it was much appreciated.
My husband and I took our honeymoon in Seattle and stayed with Shelby for 5 nights. She was a wonderful host and responded to our questions very quickly. Her place was very clean and quaint. I would not stay here if you are taking a romantic getaway. There is no door separating the entryway door and the staircase that leads to the unit and their unit, It's just a curtain and I felt very exposed. There is also a sign posted that says sound travels very easily through their unit and their neighbors so I constantly felt like I had to whisper. My husband has a naturally loud speaking voice so I had to shush him quite a bit. The bed is also extremely uncomfortable, its so firm, it felt like I was sleeping on the floor. The street is very narrow and parking is somewhat difficult if you aren't used to street parking. The neighborhood is also very urban, and I felt uncomfortable my first couple of days. Overall I had a pretty good experience but would not stay here again.
Brittany was a troublesome guest that had very different expectations than those that were clearly described in our listing. This is a unit that is completely private to you. We have many people who love the high-quality mattress we have, and of course others who don't like it. Beds are a very personal preference, and we obviously can't please everyone. If you travel, please go with the flow! Also-- be happy that you have found a place in the middle of the city with plentiful, free parking right out front! This is rare!
When i arrived at the apartment the first thing you see is there funky little house with the most colorful flower and veggie garden. The first look of everything brought a big smile to my face.Everything was just as Shelby explained.I walked in the back of the house to my own private door and down the stairs to a very modern apartment with a nice big bathroom and a very workable kitchen. The bed and pillows are comfortable for good nights ZZZzzz and my friend stayed on the little single bed which she said was just fine.We stayed out late in the night and slept late in the mornings and loved the place just fine.I went to the swimming pool a number of times which is only 5 blocks from there house(a real treat for me) and afterwards i would take a 10 minute walk to katy's corner cafe for the best veggie sandwich and coffee on E Union st. Right across the road they just opened a Hop Shop with all the beer you can imagine. They even let you drink it there. We both loved our stay in Shelby and Dan's apartment and i would highly recommend this place.
My boyfriend and I were up in Seattle for one night while looking to buy a car and Shelby accommodated us on short notice, which was much appreciated. The apartment is comfortable, clean, and nicely appointed with unique vintage pieces. Some 'guest' apartments feel like an afterthought -- sparsely decorated and drab with the reject furniture -- but this place is not one of them!
Check-in was very easy; Shelby gave good directions to the house and about how to get in by yourself.
The neighborhood is definitely residential (there's a playground / park at the end of the block) rather than urban, though it's not far to downtown and other areas with great restaurants, etc. The block is very nice and there was plenty of on-street parking. We had a short stay but it was a good one! Thank you!
From the very beginning, Shelby provided clear and robust instructions on how to get to the listing, how to get in, and how to contact her should anything arise. Going into booking this space, I was very comfortable with the amount of information provided, and the level of communication with her.
The space itself is accurately represented by the pictures, and is very spacious. Some have mentioned 3 people comfortably staying here, and I would definitely agree with that assessment. The room was clean and nicely put together with all the amenities one might need provided. The bed was a bit hard for our tastes, but I slept just fine, and I like that she provides a fan for those of us who like a little white noise while we sleep. Also a nice touch, the TV with a DVD player and (what I assume are the owner's favorite) DVDs. It gives you insight into the owners, which is fun.
The neighborhood was nice, albeit kind of spotty in that we had a rental car and weren't completely comfortable in leaving it overnight. In the short span of time that we first arrived and then headed out for the evening, we noticed that a car across the street from us had its rear driver's side window broken out, which made us a bit uneasy. But no incidents came of it, so I assume this was an isolated incident.
We had a brief chance to meet Dan, who seems like a cool guy, which is unsurprising given my experience up to that point.
We are unaware of the break-in; no reports from neighbors or crime blog and no broken glass on the ground; possibly the crime was done somewhere else? More than half of our guests rent cars and break-ins have never been in issue with our guests or our neighbors. As stated, we do live in a central urban area, but in a highly safe city. We are sorry you felt uncomfortable; we would have happily offered some advice if this issue had been brought to our attention.
Nice spacious apartment, met our needs during our stay in Seattle.
This place was FABULOUS! I loved it, its just like the picture shows. We arrived a little later on the Saturday, Shelby showed us how to get in and where to put the key when we left, the place was neat and orderly. Everything that was promised was there and little notes around the place to answer questions that you needed which was great. The hosts were nice and helpful with giving us places to eat and things to see. The Lost Lakes for breakfast was GREAT! check it out, the area was great with busses close by along with a cool little park. I would definitely recommend this place and I would choose them again. :)
Shelby was a great host. She replied to my enquiry very quickly and the key handoff was very easy. Location was terrific and everything was as mentioned in the listing. We had a great trip and many laughs. Thanks!
