***NIhonbashi***
Nihonbashi is a traditional area in many senses regarding economics, trade and history, etc...
Centering on the Nihonbashi Bridge, an important cultural asset of Japan, the head office of The Bank of Japan and Tokyo Stock Exchange is located here. Along with being Japan's financial district, there are many old-established department stores including Mitsukoshi and Takashimaya.
Amid the recent redevelopment, the number of large-scale buildings has been increasing. On the other hand, there still remains the more rustic touch of Shitamachi (old Tokyo downtown) with places like Ningyocho, Wholesale District, etc. Nihonbashi is an area where the heart of Japan's economy and finance fuses with history and tradition.

***NIngyocho***
Ningyocho is known as a town filled with the atomosphere and touch of Shitamachi (old Tokyo in Edo period).
Along narrow streets, there is a mixture of offices, restaurants and houses. There are many old-fashioned restaurants, sweets shops for both Japanese delicacies and cakes, delicatessen shops and traditional handicraft shops. The most famous street is called "Amazake Yokocho". Also, there is Suitengu Shrine, Meijiza Theater, and Hamacho Park within a short distance. Many annual events are held such as Setomono-ichi (chinaware market) in August, Ningyo-ichi (dolls market) and Bettara-ichi (radish fair) in October... it (email hidden)ly town.
Since the establishment of the Edo Shogunate, Ningyocho has supported various livelihoods and traditions for 400 years. Even now, after Tokyo becoming a megalopolis, there is still a feeling of humanity and history in this town.

  • We had a great three-night stay at Kei's apartment! The location is fantastic--just a short walk away from a subway station that services several different areas of the Tokyo metropolis (Shinjuku, Ginza, and many more), and it's close to the center of the city. Also, one of the lines running through is the JR Sobu Rapid line, which means direct access to Narita Airport (very convenient for us). Finally, everything was set up as expected, and the directions, local recommendations, and labeling on devices inside the apartment were all super helpful! Thanks again, Kei!

  • We had a great three night stay at Hide & Kei's apartment. At first it seemed a bit tiny with three of us, but we quickly got used to that. It was a perfect location for our day plans on the eastern side of Tokyo. The directions and local map Kei provided were really useful, especially when working out where we were when emerging from the metro - of which there are three stations very close by to choose from! The apartment has absolutely everything you can wish for - nothing has been forgotten. The bedding was really comfortable and the bathroom facilities great. It was so useful having a washing machine and everything is labeled so you don't have to guess which buttons to press! Hide and Kei are clearly eager for their guests to have a perfect experience and they pretty much achieve that. The TV is not much use unless you are, or understand, Japanese but that was the case at every place we stayed in Japan (is there no cable TV in Japan?). We also appreciated the wifi. It was spotlessly clean and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this lovely apartment.

  • Kei was super helpful answering all my questions. Plus the apartment was very clean and in a great location. Thanks for everything, Kei!

  • Great host, great apartment, great location! Closest I've ever stayed to a JR East station (same block), and has a Tokyo Metro not much further away. Only one stop from most of the places I needed to go! Hope to stay here again!

  • I loved staying here. It was great having a direct link to and from Narita (always a pain to get to) right outside the front door, plus multiple choices of subway and underground lines all steps away. Calling the location Nihombashi is perhaps a bit of a stretch, even if the swish historic neighborhood is within walking distance. But if anything, I found the traditional shops, wholesalers and waterfront views near the apartment more interesting. In addition to Nihombashi, Asakusa is also a short walk away and well worth exploring.

The studio itself is compact, but very workable. I needed to cook treats for a surprise birthday celebration during my stay, and the kitchen delivered everything I needed. The Japanese style self-contained half-bath was perfect for soaking after long, cold days outside. One night I watched a DVD from the eclectic collection left for guests. I loved the Time Out Tokyo magazine that I found waiting for me. I was able to iron shirts on a mini-ironing board. And the pocket wifi was a godsend in hard to navigate Tokyo (and in a country where data roaming would have cost me a fortune).

Kei was quick to respond to my last-minute booking and to all the questions I had during my stay. Everything is set up so that the guest is autonomous, including written instructions that
are exhaustive and easy to follow. I'd happily stay again.

  • Everything went like planned before, room is alright and everything you might use is there. The portable internet is very helpful. Cheers

  • This apartment was great! Yes, it's typically small like everything in Japan, but it has all you need. It was clean, neat, modern and uncluttered. Excellent location with direct access to JR, Toei & Metro lines and surprisingly quiet despite being so central. Decent size bathroom even for a gaijin with a smorgasbord of buttons for the toilet and shower heating & drying. A great base of operations for any Tokyo or even Japan wide holiday.

  • Had a delightful stay in the middle of Tokyo. Very easy transport access (only a few minutes walk to three different railway stations). Lots of great restaurants nearby (and pop in to some of the back street restaurants for some authentic experiences)

    December 2013
  • Pros :

    1) apartment is very clean and cosy

    2) complimentary portable wifi provided. This enabled me to travel around Japan with ease. I took a day trip to Kyoto and wifi connection there was good too.

    3) closely located to Bakurocho JR station (less than one minute walk). Good for tourists who are using the JR rail pass. It is also closely located to the Bakuroyokoyama subway station.

    4) convenience stores are very close by. (Less than one minute walk).

    5) Muji aroma diffuser provided to give the room a soothing and calming atmosphere.

    6) big tv

    7) quiet neighborhood, no sounds of the city.

    8) the host - Kei San was very responsive and helpful. Instructions given to get to the apartment were also very clear.

    9) early check in / late check out possible if no one has booked the rooms for those dates. More flexible than staying in a hotel. I could check in by 1030am and check out by 5pm.

    Cons :

    1) the mattress was not comfortable. I could feel the springs when I lie down and had severe backache throughout the trip.

    2) though closely located from the Bakurocho JR train station, you still have to change trains at Tokyo station (2 stops away) to get to Shinjuku / Shibuya / Harajuku area. DiSCLAIMER: I had a JR Rail Pass, hence I chose to travel via JR line and this is my experience : The train at Bakurocho JR station is not frequent, sometimes having to wait up till 15 mins for the train. This makes the journey to Shinjuku / Shibuya / Harajuku about 40 mins long. Alternatively, you can choose to take the subway at Bakuroyokoyama station. It only takes 15 mins to Shinjuku.

    Hide&Kei
    Response from Hide&Kei:

To Shinjuku / Shibuya / Harajuku area.
There is direct access to Shinjuku by using Bakuroyokoyama station, Toei Shinjuku Line ( which is connected to Bakurocho station in the basement). It takes only 15 minutes. For Shibuya and Harajuku, there is many ways to get there, Usually takes 20-30 minutes and also JR line is not the best way.

    About mattress.
I did not concern about mattress before as no one have ever been told about this before. People either like this type of mattress or don't like it? I will think about this if I've got more review like this!

  • My experience with Hide and Kei's apartment was very positive. The train station was literally around the corner and just 2 stops away from Tokyo Station. There's an elevator if you have a lot of luggage. There's also a market across the street - great for snacks and fruit. The apartment is very modern and clean. I slept on the bed, which was comfortable. However, my friend slept on the couch and he said it wasn't comfortable. So, I guess that's something to consider. I would definitely stay here again for my next trip to Japan. Thank you, Hide and Kei!
