The Space

The flat is in the 3th floor of a 18th century building with stone and wood staircases, and 19th century tiles in the walls.

The building façades are facing North and South. It has a magnificent old city view towards the North. (Bairro Alto, São Bento, Estrela and Príncipe Real).
The area and the building are residential and quite peaceful.

The flat has been recently renovated (September 2012). In the renovation, carefully done under the supervision of an architect, the apartment was entirely rehabilitated.
All materials used in the construction are 100% natural/ ecological: wooden structure and boarding, natural stone floors, and traditional lime mortar in the walls. All together they greatly enhance the quality of the inner environment, guaranteeing you the difference in your stay.
Despite the big remodelling, the spirit of the traditional Pombaline architecture remains intact and prevails in such elements as the fireplace, the tiled walls, the peach pine doors, and door and windows massive oak shutters.

The apartment is, so to say, a 80 square meters space.
The entry hall, with wooden flooring and traditional wooden ceiling communicates with the living, the dinning-room, master bedroom, kitchen and bathroom.
There are two separated bedrooms:
the master bedroom equipped with a double bed; (window toward the city view - North)
and the secondary bedroom equipped with to individual beds (window toward the main façade - South)
In each bedroom two sliding panels (a wooden one and glass one) separate them from the dinning-room. This configuration allow you to create more or less intimacy, more open or closed spaces, and to make light cross the 3 rooms.

The living room is a quite cosy place. The large acacia floor boards are unique! Then, over a large carpet, you find the sofa, two armchairs, a couple of chairs and all accessories (TV set, DVD player, Hi-Fi set and a few DVDs). There are cultivated flower pots outside the windows.

The dinning room, was designed, inspired by a bistro ambiance. There are two wood and grey marble tables and chairs, and above them, a very dim light coming from two industrial 70's lamps suspended by the ceiling. For a breakfast or a luncheon in family you can open completely the sliding panels and get all the light in.

In the kitchen, the main piece is the old chimney. You will be cooking in its interior! The kitchen is fully equipped with a dishwasher, refrigerator (no freezer though), microwave-grill, and electrical hob. In the drawers and cabinets you will find everything that you will be needing. Everything pretty tidy and clean! By the window you'll see a beautiful 'jacarandá tree' with its violet flower mass just in front of it and the Northern Hills (Bairro Alto, São Bento, Estrela and Príncipe Real)

The bathroom is designed both in white marble and Portuguese traditional tiles. A wall mirror brings lisbon's light and views into the room. The marble shower has an incredible view to the North side of the city!

In the interior, the 6 existing windows allow a lot of natural light to come in. By night, the lighting design is simple, subtle and thus comfortable.
There is cable TV and wi-fi internet free of charge.
In each bedroom, living, dinning room and bathroom, there are electric heaters at your disposal.

Santa Catarina

The flat is located in the Bairro of Santa Catarina, in the historical centre of Lisbon.
Santa Catarina is an old quarter which blends both magnificent palaces and 18th and 19th century housing. It has a wonderful location on the top of a hill facing the Tagus River and its margins. Due to constrained traffic access, it has a very peaceful neighbourhood. Organized alongside a small garden is the sightseeing place "Miradouro de Santa Catarina", from where you would want to enjoy the astonishing view of the city and river.
A 3 minutes walk brings you either to Bairro Alto or to Chiado, where you can experience the Portuguese gastronomy and have a feel of the Bairro Alto's night life in its bars and discos.
A 10 minutes walk brings you to Baixa - down town, one of Lisbon's best shopping areas, an exquisite association of modern stores and old boutiques. Baixa is also one of the oldest districts of the capital, its streets converging to the famous Praça do Comércio, historical door from where all the spices, gold, silk and other various unknown treasures entered Europe during the splendorous years of the great discoveries.

At 100 meters from the flat, you can catch the famous tramway #28 that covers the sightseeing tour of Lisbon's hills.
Just beside the flat, Bica tramway railway takes you down to Cais-do-Sodré where you will find the tramways to Belém and the trains to Cascais. If you'd rather walk note that you can enjoy a 5 minutes walk aside the tramway rail line and down the Bica quarter.
Cais do Sodré also has a port of embarkation to cross the Tagus River. The back trip is an amazing journey that helps understanding the city's growth along its' seven hills.
In between Chiado, Baixa and Cais-do-Sodré you have access to diverse public transportation (bus, train, tram and subway) which can deliver you directly to any point in the city.
Due to the flat's central location and the proximity of many of Lisbon's interest points, a few minutes walk will be a delight and surely another point of view of the city's landscape.

  • Pedro’s apartment is absolutely the perfect spot to explore this beautiful and vibrant city!! Situated by one of the miradouros (terraces with magnificent view over the Tejo) where young people gather to enjoy and play some music, especially vibrant at sunset and the evenings; it is close to the Baixa-Chiado metro station, next to the iconic 28 tram line and the Bica elevator which you have seen on post cards. Plus Santa Catarina area is just below the Bairo Alto which is the bars and restaurants district, where nightlife is, and during the day don’t pass by the many pastelarias on the main street Rua Loreto/Calcada do Combro. So the location couldn’t be beaten! The apartment itself provides all the comfort you need to have a relaxing stay – coffee machine with capsules, drawers stocked with all sorts of supplies, cutlery, etc, nothing missing. In general, we love the possibility to stay in typical local houses in order to soak the atmosphere of the cities we visit. And Pedro’s place is in an 18th century building with azulejos on the staircases and all over the apartment, stone beams and wooden staircases. Made us feel like locals! But what really makes it unforgettable and would make you always remember this HOUSE is the bathroom with a view. At first I was shocked how would we take shower but soon realized that condensation is the perfect curtain, and believe me, by the end of your stay, you would be singing in the shower with the window wide open! :-) What can I say about Pedro… Pedro is the perfect host! A true gentleman, helped us with everything without us even asking, plus we had a very nice and welcome complimentary surprise upon check in. I enjoy very much the possibility to connect with locals and get inside information about the cities I visit and in this case Pedro’s input was really valuable. Being also an architect, we came to know curious facts about Lisboa and Praça do Comércio :-) We absolutely enjoyed communicating with him! This apartment is a real find!

  • Thank-you very much Pedro! We (a family of four with the children 5 and 2 years old) had a simply wonderful stay in your flat in Lisbon! It offered all we could possibly wish for: peaceful and quiet location, right beside the mirador with a superb view of the river Tejo, a beautiful old house with a lovely interior, located at a walking distance to the center, metro and train station, it is a jewel of a place! We always looked forward to coming home to it after a day of sightseeing. Thank-you also very much for your kind hospitality and attentiveness, and your great tips on architecture in and around Lisbon! We wish you all the best and will surely contact you again next time we come to stay!

  • Pedro was a really helpful and welcoming host and his apartment couldn't have been better. It took him 5 years to renovate and it shows! Beautifully designed, all the comforts of home and very peaceful, yet only a short walk from everything in Lisbon. We loved staying there and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. We'll definitely go back next time we're in Lisbon.

    Gracias Pedro!

  • We had a wonderful experience in Lisbon. We were a group of three, 2 adults and one 17 year old.

We had a good reception by our host Pedro. He was available and supportive before and throughout our entire stay in Lisbon. He also helped us hire a taxi to the airport for our departure. In addition, a nice guidebook was available to explain everything you need to know to function in the apartment and beyond.

The picture of the place made the place seem larger than it actually was, however, for us, this was a bonus because we like cozy comfortable places. We went in December, so this time of year the weather is a bit chilly, It takes about a day for the apartment to warm up to a comfortable level inside for warm natured tenants.

The location for us was brilliant. The access to the transportation was excellent and we felt that we were in the heart of the life of Lisbon. There are countless shops, cafe's, markets around to serve your basic needs plus an amazing supermarket and department store right off one of the rail lines (Azul - Sao Sabastion stop).

The view from the apartment was nice, with a breathtaking view of the city. If you want a view of the river, you can take a 5 minute walk down the street to a small park. The park also has a cafe and bar for sitting and relaxing. The crowds at the park provided a mixture of old and young adults a many types and backgrounds.

The beds and furniture was comfortable. Pedro decorated the place with artifacts and provided classy tiles and wooden molding throughout the apartment which gave it a warm feeling. The sliding doors was a neat trick to create multifuctional privacy and lighting. There were numerous plants scattered about the apartment along with candles to accent your evening dinner. There was plenty of furniture to lounge around upon during our stay.

There are plenty of electrical outlets for your electronics and the WIFI was fast and reliable although I did not do a lot of video streaming on this vacation. The lighting was sufficient with a reading lamp in everyroom.

All items needed to live in the apartment was available. We were there for 9 days, so we needed a lot of resources to live.

The location was quiet during the week, but a bit noisy on the weekend with local neighbors enjoying the weekend break. This did not present a problem as we a familiar with city life.

To summarize, we had a great time living in Pedro's beautiful apartment and would recommend it to friends. We look forward to visiting again and will be looking for Pedro. :)

  • Pedro arrived and greeted us with a smile, at the dinner table a welcome, perfect lighting and temperature, we helped carry luggage ...
    In short, the perfect host.

Every detail of the floor is a luxury, not missing any supplement, cutlery, crockery, blankets, bedspreads, even the ashtrays are chosen with extreme taste and knowledge an architect cultivated.

We have been to many hotels but none of them comes close to the experience of staying at home Pedro Mira.

    Thank you very much!

  • Our stay at Santa Catarina was just perfect! The apartment is very well located and in a quiet neighborhood. Once inside the apartment we were in a very comfortable, spacious and beautiful place. My sisters and I could not have chosen a better place. Pedro is uncomplicated and a warm and most attentive host. I would definitely return to the apartment and Lisboa and I would definetly recommend it to my friends… I already did!

  • The most beautiful appartment built with a lot of thought about the practical things, materials but most of all harmony and feeling. Nothing too much, nothing too little.
Santa Catarina is the real Lisbon whoever wants to experience a piece of that.
