The space

The Palm Garden Suite is a separate apartment with its own private entrance, private bathroom, private garden. The owner and her dog live in the adjoining apartment and walled garden on the other side of the house.

You'll open the private entrance door into a small “café” area with bistro table and chairs. There's a kitchenette with sink, microwave, blender, mini-refrigerator, and coffeemaker. Coffee, tea, and oatmeal provided. The cafe area leads into a serene bedroom with its own private bath including tub/shower with grab bars.

NOTE: The mattress is firm, with a polyfill mattress topper for comfort. If you prefer a regular mattress cover, without the padded topper, let me know when you confirm your booking.

NOTE: Please bring your own cell phone. There is no landline or house phone in the suite.

Your view out every window is graced with palm trees, so the suite feels light, airy and private. The sound of birds chirping greets you in the morning, and a songbird will sing you to sleep at night (depending on the season!).

Gaze up at the azure Sarasota sky from your comfortable seat on the wood deck. Wiggle your toes in the soft, sandy garden “beach.”

Guest access

Bistro sitting area with kitchenette, private bathroom, private queen bedroom. Private deck, private garden. On-site parking for one car. Additional car can park on street.

Interaction with guests

Host lives quietly with dog in the adjoining apartment and private garden. Available by phone or airbnb-email for questions or assistance.
Gracious and want you to be comfortable, yet will give you plenty of privacy and personal space.

The neighborhood

From the Palm Garden, it’s an easy ten-minute stroll to Arlington Park, which features a .5 mile scenic walking path, pond and fountain, and public recreational facilities including outdoor pool, gym, tennis and basketball courts. Also close by is the Frank Berlin Sarasota Family YMCA. One-day free pass is included in your stay at the Palm Garden suite.

Only four blocks to Southside Village, which offers restaurants with both American and international cuisines, specialty shops, and live music. Sarasota Memorial Hospital is adjacent to Southside Village.

A picturesque eight-block walk through the neighborhood brings you to Midtown Plaza, a convenience shopping area with Panera Bread, Starbucks, Michaels on East restaurant, Winn Dixie supermarket, Davidson’s Pharmacy, Elysian Fields books and gifts. A couple of blocks to the south are Tijuana Flats, Chipotle, Yogurtology, Subway, and other restaurants.

Ed Smith Stadium, winter home of the Baltimore Orioles baseball team, is only 10 minutes away.

Getting around

You can drive to almost any destination in Sarasota within 5 - 15 minutes from the Palm Garden Suite. It's only 15 minutes to Siesta Key, 12 minutes to downtown Sarasota, 15 minutes to St Armand's Circle on Lido Key. Conveniently, Shade Avenue and Tuttle Avenue parallel Rte 41 (Tamiami Trail), so there are ways to avoid traffic on the "Trail".

If you prefer using the SCAT bus system to driving around Sarasota, you can hop onto the 17 bus north to get downtown, or south to get to the Southgate Mall, Gulf Gate, Siesta Key (change to 11 bus at Southgate Mall), Sarasota Square Mall, and other points including Venice.

It's easy to get to downtown, Lido Key and St Armands Circle, and Siesta Key via bicycle. It's customary to ride on the sidewalks here, which keeps you out of the path of traffic. Although there are bicycle enthusiasts who use the roads.

Other things to note

The Palm Garden suite is lovely, but you probably won’t spend much time here, since there’s so much to do in Sarasota!

The Palm Garden is intended to be a place of relaxation, close to the fun of Sarasota, yet conveniently away from it all, so you can catch your breath and just be.

Thermostat is on the wall in vestibule opposite bathroom door. The Palm Garden Suite is on the coolest side of the house, so you probably won't need to set thermostat any lower than 78 degrees.
IMPORTANT: Please set temp to 80 whenever you leave the house, to save energy. Thank you.

PLEASE PARK YOUR CAR ON THE RECTANGLE OF TAN PEBBLES ON FRONT LAWN. Take extra care backing out of the driveway, as cars tend to go fast down this street and your view of westbound traffic is somewhat obscured by neighbor's mailbox and shrubbery.

For optimal sound privacy from the other side of the house, close your bedroom door.

Light switch for overhead lights in cafe/closet area is behind the bedroom door.

Light switch for back porch light is behind the white curtain, on left side of back door.

Please keep the back door closed at all times, so that bugs and critters don't get into the house. Wash dishes as you use them. Empty your wastebaskets into the garbage tubs next to the pathway and deck. Thank you for helping to keep the Palm Garden Suite pesticide-free.

Remember to lock your car. This is a nice neighborhood, but unlocked cars with stuff in them are tempting to thieves.

The Palm Garden suite accommodates 1 or 2 adults. Please be specific about number of people when making your reservation. No overnight visitors will be admitted that have not been approved with your reservation request.

No drugs or excessive drinking tolerated. Please clean up after yourself in bathrooms as well as in other areas you use. All guests must be at least 26 years of age.

On-site parking for one car only. Additional car may park on the street.

The suite is not family- , child- or baby-friendly.

No smoking, guns or drugs indoors or anywhere on the property.

No pets, please. There is a resident dog in the owner's adjoining apartment and pooches next door.

Bath towels, beach towels and bed linens are provided. There are also sand chairs available for use at the beach. Additional towels and blankets are located in the storage bench in your room.

This was our return trip to Susan's Palm Court suite. We were here the same time last year. One could not ask for more beautiful weather and temperature. It is such a convenient location to Ed Smith Stadium (Baltimore Orioles Spring Training) and to downtown Sarasota. We enjoyed many local restaurants and night spots thanks to Susan's recommendations. We were pleasantly surprised at the addition of a heater/air conditioner unit for the suite. We did take advantage of the heater on a few chilly mornings. No need for the air conditioner as there was a steady pleasant breeze blowing. The suite is cheerily decorated, the kitchenette is adequate for light meals. She has thoughtfully provided beach necessities. The Palm Court is a comfy cosy suite for a couple who do not want the hotel or motel experience but just want privacy. We highly recommend Susan's place as returning occupants for a second year in a row.

I really appreciate that you took the time to provide lots of descriptive details to your review, Frank and Paula. It was a pleasure to welcome you back as "regulars" to the Palm Garden Suite, and to catch up on the past year. I'm always happy to hear that the location, amenities, and activity suggestions have added value to your stay. Let's continue to make this an annual event. :)

We had a wonderful stay at Susan's. Her place is very cute and very comfortable and the location is perfect - walking distance to many restaurants and grocery stores and a quick, easy drive to the beach. Susan was a great host and gave us lots of useful information on the area. I would definitely stay again!

Good no frills place to stay if you're in Sarasota for a few days. Count on renting a car, though.

Response from Susan:
Yes, you definitely need a car in Sarasota, since all of our walkable districts are not within walking distance from each other. However, there are a number of restaurants, shops, and a park within easy walking distance from the Palm Garden Suite. That's one of the nice things about this neighborhood.

Susan's place is a cozy, self-contained unit with complete privacy. Once you familiarize yourself with the unit, you realize that Susan thought of just about everything. Though small, the kitchen area contains a small refrigerator, microwave, all the dishware and utensils you'd need and such provisions as coffee, tea, oatmeal and an assortment of granola bars. There is a new air conditioner in the main room, a power strip for cell phones, etc., plenty of storage space and lighting, a desk and a comfortably firm double bed. In addition, beach towels and chairs are available for a recommended trip to Lido Beach. Susan's place is also well situated, being close to Starbucks, Panera Bread, Winn Dixie and a variety of good neighborhood pizzerias. Susan's place has everything you could reasonably expect and we consider it an excellent value.

Response from Susan:
What a wonderfully detailed review. Thank you for appreciating and taking advantage of all the details and the ambiance that I've tried to provide for my guests. The recent addition of a separate, very quiet heating/A/C system truly makes the suite a world unto itself. I look forward to hosting you both again here, hopefully for a longer stay!

The room was very clean. It is private with private bathroom/shower along with private kitchen sink microwave and minifridge private back door. I walked to Hillview restaurants almost daily (about a mile). Susan was very concerned about my comfort throughout the stay. She lets you be but will checkin with you throughout even providing helpful hints here and there about Sarasota. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and can easily recommend this place to you.

I like living in a beautiful place that combines the outdoors with access to music, international restaurants, and people from all over the world.

I'm a writer, publishing Web sites and blogs about interesting places and topics, including SarasotaGuide, WalkinginSarasotaFL, BestMusicTonight, and BoosterFoods.

I've lived in Sarasota since 2000, originally from New York. Have also lived in Nashville TN, and Aspen CO. But Sarasota's my favorite town. Love the weather, the beauty, the people, and the convenience of having everything I need within 5 miles of my house!

My dog and I live quietly in the adjoining suite and private garden, and we both enjoy daily walks in our lovely and eclectic neighborhood.

If you're new to Sarasota, I'm happy to suggest restaurants, day-trips, and unique districts and events to make your visit special. Or you can simply set out on your own to discover "your Sarasota."

My primary goal as an airbnb host is to provide a comfortable, clean, and peaceful private space you can use as your "home base" while visiting Sarasota. Hopefully your biggest challenge will be deciding what activities to pursue and which places to explore.
