About this listing
Our historic and art-filled home is close to the UW hospital but is located in a quiet and pretty neighborhood. We love to comfortably accommodate our guests inviting you to use the inviting screen porch, back garden patio and well-equipped kitchen.
We are happy to be in our third year of hosting Airbnb guests and we'd love to host you. If you are looking for a single room while visiting the UW-Madison hospital, campus, or downtown, our house is close to all and is pretty, cozy, bright and clean.
Built in 1936, our house is in quiet College Park, at the foot of historic University Heights. Your room has a new extra-long single bed with lots of pillows and a down comforter (in winter), and blackout shades on the windows. When you're here, I'm not in the bedroom/office. If it is mutually agreeable, I might ask to use my desk to run a chamber music festival, when you are not at the house.
If you are looking for an entire house, check out our other listing (Cozy Artist's House)...our three bedrooms, two-bath home consists of one king bed, one extra-long twin in the office, and one full bed in the third bedroom (all with down comforters in winter). A full-sized sofa sleeper (with a feather bed) in the living room can sleep two.
In the house, you'll find a great wi-fi connection, a flat-screen T.V. in the kitchen, iron/ironing board, and hair dryer upstairs. There is a stereo with iPod hook up in the living room (no T.V. so you can visit with friends/family or enjoy the stillness).
We're a busy family of three who love art, music, travel, and locally sourced food.
Footnote: the view from the (website hidden) map from the street is not Kendall Ave. Also, since Madison Airbnb hosts are required to be licensed by the City of Madison and State of Wisconsin, we are in full compliance.
Enjoy the entire house. The screened-in porch and patio are great for warm summer evening meals. The kitchen has everything within reach. Your organic breakfast--we're happy to try to accommodate a special request--will include fresh fruit, English muffins, breakfast beverages, and French-press coffee or tea (WI State law won't permit us to offer perishable items).
If you'd like to use the washer and dryer, they are in the basement.
Since this is our primary residence when you're not here, please use empty drawers, or luggage and clothes racks provided outside of our closets.
Interaction with Guests
We will definitely connect through Airbnb or email to confirm plans. If you are new to Airbnb a connection over email or the phone is nice. We'd like to know of any special requests to make your stay terrific! We may or may not be here to greet you personally, but will arrange to leave you a key and connect when we get back.
We will help you with your itinerary or restaurant recommendations. We can discuss dinner options with us if you are staying for several nights or you may even want to cook while you're here (we're very close to Whole Foods and other grocery stores).
Our neighborhood is tree-lined and excellent for strolling. It's quiet but near the UW hospital and campus. Madison is also a great place for foodies! Visit one of three nearby farmers' markets on a Saturday morning for amazing cinnamon rolls, fresh goat cheeses and hickory nuts. If you like to run or walk, go to picnic point on Lake Mendota or through the beautiful UW Arboretum's gardens or wooded trails. Frank Lloyd Wright's Unitarian Meeting House is within walking distance for architectural history buffs. Of course, you can always catch some kind of Badger game, too!
We are very close to the UW-Madison hospital (12 minute walk), and a short bike ride, bus ride (Madison Metro) or 30 minute walk to the heart of campus (through a pretty neighborhood). 20 minute walk to Camp Randall to see a UW-Madison football game. We are two short blocks from a major bus route (University Ave.), which can take you to the Kohl Center, the Capitol Square (for the Monona Terrace or Ironman), shopping at Hilldale or at boutiques along Monroe Street or just about anywhere else you want to go! We also live on a designated bike route, Kendall Avenue. Bike to campus or bike paths that take you to the beautiful city trail. Street (Farley & Kendall) parking is limited to 2 hours on weekdays. All-day free parking on weekdays is a 1/2 mile west on Bluff Street (Kendall turns into Bluff). All-day free parking on Farley Ave. on weekends, but we can help you figure it out. From the airport, you can take a short cab ride or Uber to our house, about 15 minutes. Madison is too small to have a subway.
Other Things to Note
Parking – Tell us your needs; your best bet is free street parking on the weekends and evenings. Free two hour (at a time) street parking on weekdays. No parking 8AM - noon on Thursdays across from our house on Kendall. All-day free parking on weekdays is a 1/2 mile west on Bluff Street (Kendall turns into Bluff). All-day free parking on Farley Ave. on weekends. We can help you figure it out!
The Sunday NY Times is delivered to the house, so feel free to enjoy it if you're here then.
Let us know your check in/check out times in advance, if possible--and tell us if you've been delayed! Treat our house kindly, no smoking or pets. We love guests who remove their shoes upon entering the house. Please be mindful of opening and closing doors quietly upstairs: we're usually sawing logs between 11 PM - 6 AM.
I work for a chamber music festival and love to promote the visual arts, too. Bruce is a printmaker at the UW and artist. I can't live without travel and cooking and eating great, local food. We want to make sure you have a clean and comfy place to stay and we're happy to get to know you or leave you alone!
