Our historic and art-filled home is close to the UW campus but is located in a quiet and pretty neighborhood. We love to comfortably accommodate our guests inviting you to use the pretty screen porch, back garden patio and well-equipped kitchen.
We'd love to host you, especially if you are here investigating whether Madison is a good place for you to go to school, live, or work! If you are only looking for a single room while visiting the UW-Madison campus, hospital, or downtown, our house is close to all and is pretty, cozy, bright and clean.
Built in 1936, we're in quiet College Park, at the foot of historic University Heights. Your room has a cozy extra-long single bed with lots of pillows and a down comforter, blackout shades on the windows. When you're here, I'm not in the bedroom/office. If it is mutually agreeable, I might ask to use my desk to run a chamber music festival, when you are not at the house.
If you are looking for an entire house, check out our other listing (Cozy Artist's House)...our three bedrooms, two-bath home consists of one king bed, one extra-long twin in the office, and one extra-long twin in the third bedroom (all with down comforters). A full-sized sofa sleeper (with a feather bed) in the living room can sleep two.
In the house, you'll find a great wi-fi connection, a flat-screen T.V. in the kitchen, iron/ironing board, and hair dryer upstairs. There is a stereo with iPod hook up in the living room (no T.V. there, for peace and quiet)!
We're a busy family of three who love art, music, travel, and locally sourced food.
Footnote: the view from the (website hidden) map from the street is not Kendall Ave. Also, we are mandated to pay sales and lodging tax, with which we comply.
Enjoy the entire house. The screened-in porch and patio are great for warm summer evening meals. The kitchen has everything within reach. Your mostly-organic breakfast will include delicious items, including fresh fruit, breakfast beverages, and French-press coffee or tea.
If you'd like to use the washer and dryer, they are in the basement.
Since this is our primary residence when you're not here, please use luggage and clothes racks provided outside of our closets.
Interaction with Guests
We will definitely connect through Airbnb or email to confirm plans. If you are new to Airbnb a connection over email or the phone is nice. We'd like to know of any special requests to make your stay terrific! We may or may not be here to greet you personally, but will arrange to leave you a key and connect when we get back.
We will help you with your itinerary or restaurant recommendations. We can discuss dinner options with us or you may even want to cook while you're here (we're very close to Whole Foods).
Our neighborhood is tree-lined and excellent for strolling. It's quiet but near the UW hospital and campus. Madison is also a great place for foodies! Visit one of three nearby farmers' markets on a Saturday morning for amazing cinnamon rolls, fresh goat cheeses and hickory nuts. If you like to run or walk, go to picnic point on Lake Mendota or through the beautiful UW Arboretum's gardens or wooded trails. Frank Lloyd Wright's Unitarian Meeting House is within walking distance for architectural history buffs. Of course, you can always catch some kind of Badger game, too!
We are very close to the UW-Madison hospital (12 minute walk), and a short bike ride, bus ride (Madison Metro) or 30 minute walk to campus (through a pretty neighborhood). 20 minute walk to Camp Randall to see a UW-Madison football game. We are two short blocks from a major bus route (University Ave.), which can take you to the Kohl Center, the Capitol Square (for the Monona Terrace or Ironman), shopping at Hilldale or at boutiques along Monroe Street or just about anywhere else you want to go! We also live on a designated bike route, Kendall Avenue. Bike to campus or bike paths that take you to the beautiful city trail. You can park in our garage (one car) or on the street. Street parking is limited to 2 hours on weekdays and Saturdays, but we can help you figure it out. From the airport, you can take a short cab ride to our house, about 15 minutes. Madison is too small to have a subway.
Other Things to Note
The Sunday NY Times is delivered to the house, so feel free to enjoy it. In the summer, our Shorewood pool membership could be available to you as guests ($10 per guest). Please ask!
Please no smoking or pets. Treat our house kindly. We would appreciate it if you would remove your shoes upon entering the house.
This is a very comfortable room in a great neighborhood! I had to re-schedule my booking due to a canceled flight and Sam and Bruce were so patient and flexible while working with me. They are great hosts, and met me at the door to make me feel welcome. It is a shame I could only stay for one night, this house would be a great base to explore the city from!
Extremely accommodating family in a very cute home near the university. Much more comfortable than choosing a hotel. Room was clean, warm and bed was very comfortable. Had a wonderful experience, and the family was great to chat with! I will choose to stay here again should I come through again.
Nathan, I will keep my ear to the ground. If you do make it to Madison for work, please let us know. We'd be glad to help you get more connected. On that note, there is a man I work with, Dave Baskerville, who is retired but is working on "stretch targets" for schools. I would be happy to connect you two. He knows a lot of people in Madison and loves to meet new people.
Sam and Bruce were super friendly and welcoming on my recent stay to interview at the UW-hospital. I was only there for a night but the room was perfect.
Samantha and Bruce were excellent hosts. I just needed a place for one night close to the hospital and this was perfect. They greeted me at the door, gave me a nice tour of the important rooms, and showed me to my room. The room had towels (and a piece of candy) laid out, plus info about Madison for me to look through. They had breakfast foods available and shampoo/conditioner for me to use too. The room was clean and comfortable and graciously respected my privacy. I would definitely recommend staying with them for people who don't need to be downtown.
Stay with Sam and Bruce is the one of wonderful experience I have had!!!! The house is very cozy, and the owners are amazing people. You can stay comfortable, sleep very well, the neighborhood is excellent in a beautiful Madison area - very close to University of Wisconsin.
When I come back to visit my son at the University again, my trip dates will be conditioned to Sam's house availability, for sure!!!
Many thanks Sam and Bruce for so wonderful support you gave me there!!!
Great house, great room (comfortable bed - spotless bathroom) and friendly, accommodating hosts. I was in town for a few days to visit my daughter, a new UW student. I couldn't have asked for a better location (very near UW Med Center) or better hosts. And Bruce makes a mean bowl of oatmeal. Highly recommended (the house and the oatmeal). Thanks Sam and Bruce!
Great location, fabulous house and amazing hosts. I would highly recommend Samantha and Bruce.
Thanks for making me feel so welcome to Madison :)

I work for a chamber music festival and love to promote the visual arts, too. Bruce is a printmaker at the UW and artist. I can't live without travel and cooking and eating great, local food. We want to make sure you have a clean and comfy place to stay and we're happy to get to know you or leave you alone!
