My apartment provides an immaculate, comfortable, safe and quiet space right in the very heart of Dublin's city centre. I am a highly experienced host, with multiple 5 star reviews and a 100% response record. I'm also told I have very fluffy towels!
My apartment overlooks the River Liffey with its famous Halfpenny Bridge in the Temple Bar area of Dublin. You literally can walk around the corner, from my fantastic riverside location, to enjoy your time in Ireland's capital, or you can use my apartment as a base from which to enjoy the rest of the country.
Many have remarked on the great view from my front windows. A recent visitor made this expression on arrival: "wow - this is actually even nicer than the photographs show". You can chill out at my kitchen table, (which is the size of two touching dinner plates), as you watch the river ebbing and flowing, and the non-stop stream of pedestrians on the new foot bridge.
There is quick, easy access (3 mins walk) to the Luas tram which connects the two main railway stations and central bus terminal Busarus. Taxis can drop you off right at the front door of my building. You simply could not be more central, with everywhere you are likely to want to go within an easy and pleasant walking distance.
I keep my apartment in totally immaculate condition, and am a highly organised person.
You must be a non-smoker and have first class references, as this is my home and I am very careful about who stays here. It's in a quiet, secure building with only five other apartments, yet you are only a few steps from the heart of Temple Bar, with its cafés, shops, bars, restaurants, 24/7 grocery stores, clubs, galleries, designer boutiques, Irish Film Centre, and outdoor markets. It's also five minutes walk to Trinity College, Grafton Street shops and St Stephen's Green Park.
• two bed rooms, each with a double bed
• fab river view
• high speed wireless broadband (50Mb)
• cable tv, radio and hi-fi connected to airport express
• small kitchen area, with usual range of appliances
• washer/dryer - an ancient machine....use at your own peril!
• clothes iron, hair drier
• Kitchen Aid juice blender
• hard wood floors
• power shower and bath
• extra sound-proofing on rear windows.
I also have a Mag safe charger for the convenience of any Macbook pro users.
(check plug version with me before travel, as mine is not the recently changed one)
• airport for wireless playing of your own music via my hi/fi (for Mac users with iPads or Macbooks)
• Exercise/yoga mat that you can use, or borrow to take to one of the numerous classes nearby.
When you arrive, you will find fresh fruit, milk or soya, fresh juice, croissants, and of course fresh coffee, the vital fluid that courses through my veins like the opposite of brake fluid!
There will be perfectly made beds, with freshly laundered sheets as well as nice fresh towels. I also provide some shampoo, shower gel and toothpaste to get you started. (I don't offer any hair-washing, back scrubbing or teeth cleaning service)
You will also find an absolutely pristine, light filled living space, holding many small treasures. This is because my apartment contains a selection of original contemporary art works. Some were made by me; others by my fab students. There are other not so obvious items waiting for your discovery. In addition, I have some samples of a wide and varied music collection, mostly Northern European modern jazz and minimalist music. Think Marcin Wasilewski and Phil Niblock, but also Brian Eno and Miles Davis. There are some books, but you'll be too busy visiting the many attractions of Dublin to start a book club. I also keep a comprehensive collection of maps and visitor guides.
You can cook food, but you may not want to bother, (I never do) as my apartment is surrounded by numerous restaurants and cafés catering for every taste and budget. As an avid coffee consumer, I have two cafetières and a single shot espresso maker.
I will meet you on your arrival to show you around and help you with your bags, as I am three flights of stairs up, on the top floor - hence the great view.
Please note: there is no elevator, and nowhere to store a bicycle, or a pram or a piano or any other giant items of luggage. There is also no mule to get them up the stairs - only me and you!
You will have the total private use of my entire apartment. I only meet you to show you around, etc. This also means that I place a lot of trust in those who are using my home, containing many of my possessions - hence the need for assurances and first class references.
Usually available each week from Weds night to Sunday, as I spend most weekends away. Longer periods may be available at Easter and during the summer months. Check my calendar and ask.
I have been having visitors and exchanging my apartment for many years and during that time many have returned, recommended others or become long term friends. Several of those who have stayed were engaged in longer periods of academic research at places like Trinity College or the world famous Chester Beatty Library. This is possible during the summer months, and I work out a discounted rate for these longer stays. I particularly welcome visiting fellow creative types - artists/designers/actors/writers/photographers/dancers/lemur tail combers/academics.
Please note - I will not favour those who plan to arrive at my apartment after 9.30pm at night, and will not be able to wait, so be very, very clear on that when you make your enquiry. If you cannot get to my apartment within the time frame, then please look for an alternative Thanks. (I have been kept waiting to 2 am on a few occasions, and I am determined that this will never happen again)
If you intend booking my apartment, please read the detail of my entire listing most carefully, then read it again! ha. Please make sure that if you intend to have another guest, that you tell me this at the outset, as this means booking for two and not one. There is a price (website hidden) check in time. If you arrive on Tuesday or Wednesday and it's a working day for me, I cannot guarantee an earlier check in time than 5.00pm. Most other days I can check people in at any time. When in doubt, ask me for clarity.
I am very particular about keeping my living space spotlessly clean and totally organised, so if you like that sort of environment, then you'll feel totally at home here. If you don't, then there are plenty of others to choose from. I will always favour quiet, well travelled, respectful and organised visitors. Younger visitors will have to work very hard to convince me that they are not party animals. I also don't charge any cleaning fee, so my expectation is that it is left in the perfect order that greets you on arrival.
I place a lot of care and attention into ensuring that my guests have a great experience while staying at my apartment. My feedback is all 5 stars, and my record is 100% for good reasons. I also currently have Superhost status.
PLEASE read everything again. (there could be a test!)
I sometimes get asked what I refer to as "strangely strange questions" example: do you have wi/fi? or "can I bring my pet camel"? duhhhhh. Questions like these cause me to doubt my own sanity, and who wants that?
One final point. I usually decline all requests from blank profiles, devoid of any pic or verifiable information about yourself. this means: no profile + no info = no offer to stay from me.

Interaction with Guests
We go bungee jumping off the Cliffs of Moher, then swim out to the Arran Islands dressed up as day-go clad zebras. When there is time, we exchange emails and text messages.
Numerous great cafes, bars, galleries and small shops on doorstep. Overview of River. Walk everywhere, count the chewing gum spots on the pavement and see if you get the right total.
buses, Luas, tram, train, rickshaws, Dublin Bikes all minutes away.... pavements right outside front door - bring your own shoes!
Other Things to Note
I always share my view of the red giant Betelgeuse. There is a large spike in Dublin that points directly towards it once a year. This spike is clearly visible from my apartment.
NO noise, NO smoking, NO parties, no extra guests without asking.
ALL breakages and damages must be paid for.
My apartment MUST be left in the absolutely, totally pristine condition which greets you when you arrive. I don't charge a cleaning fee, so I expect my guests to NOT leave me with bins filled to overflowing with rotting food, or invited in seagulls etc.
No re-arranging furniture or games of musical chairs with my two kitchen seats :-)
Please try to schedule your arrival for BEFORE 9.00pm, and make it clear that this is the case from the outset. I will not favour those arriving at for example 11.55pm. grrrrrr Bring a sense of humour and good spirit. Be organised. Be prepared to have a wonderful time. Read everything here. Now read it again please.
John was a most gracious and thoughtful host. He met me and my son on our arrival to Dublin and walked us through everything we needed to know about his flat. He provided detailed instructions, made recommendations on day trips and supplied brochures and guidebooks on all manner of activities. John also made himself available in case we had any questions, and then left us to explore. His flat is located in an ideal, central location - perfect for walking the entire city. I highly recommend John as a host and look forward to returning to his flat with the rest of my family on another visit.
It was so nice meeting John. My flight to Dublin was delayed by an hour, but John was so accommodating that he waited around until I arrived. After pressing the "door bell" and walking up 3 flights of stairs, John opened the door and I felt like I was home. John's place is so welcoming and cozy. It overlooks the Liffey and convenient to a lot of attractions and restaurants! Temple Bar is just around the corner! I couldn't ask for anything more. John's place beats any 4-star hotel any time!! I'd stay here again!!
This is my very first airbnb experience und it became special because of John!
A warm welcome after our late flight was so nice, he has fresh fruits and drinks provided, everything within the apartment explained very detailed in a written manual and a lot of maps and recommendations where to go! Pictures give a very good impression and everything was absolutely clean and intact.
We had SMS contact nearly every day - it was very helpful to us - John is a really caring host!
What else to say? I fell in love with Dublin and will for sure return soon and stay again at John's perfectly located place! Btw. We didn't use the bus or DART even once. Maybe I add something, no one else mentioned:
- 24h Spar-Supermarket just around the corner
- The Porterhouse with 11 different beers (brewed by man - not machines)
- Tourist office nearby, I highly recommend the 1 day Dublin Pass (we did Guinness Storehouse AND Jamson Destillery - last tour 5.30pm),
- Trinity College is not included but should be visited! Awesome library!
- half day tour to Malhide Castle and Howth was absolutely great with our funny guide!
See you soon, John! :-) And thanks a lot for accepting my first airbnb request! I will never forget these days!
As a host, John was fast in replying to queries and met us to hand over the keys at a time that was convenient to us. He was friendly and welcoming, and thorough in going through everything we needed to know. Both my friend and I know Dublin well, so we didn't need it, but John has a useful collection of information and maps for other visitors. The supplies he left us in the fridge and the quality coffee were a nice touch. And the fact that we didn't need to bring towels or basic toiletries was very handy.
The apartment itself is warm and spacious enough to accommodate up to 4 people sharing comfortably. It is suprisingly peaceful and quiet given its location next to Temple Bar. We had no trouble sleeping at all! And given its central location it is a perfect base for visiting all the major sites of Dublin and minimises the need to pay for taxis.
We really enjoyed our stay in John's apartment and would not hesitate staying there again should the need arise.
Everything was perfect and well explained. Very clean and cosy appartement in the center of the city. John is very kind !
We had a great time ! Thank you once time.
We've been in Dublin several times, but this was definitely the best place, we've stayed. Johns flat is comfy, perfectly located in central Dublin, with a lovely view to Liffey. John mailed us easy to follow instructions and was lovely and welcoming, when we arrived. The bar noise was a bit loud in the weekend, but nothing more than what you should expect, when staying in the centre of a larger city.
We can only recommend John as a host and staying in his lovely flat.
This is a really lovely apartment in an amazing location in the centre of Dublin on the river.
John couldn't have been more helpful and charming, and I had a great long weekend staying there. It's equipped with everything you could want and some extras.
Wouldn't definitely book it again when staying in Dublin.
I am a visual artist and part time lecture at a college in Ireland. Second personal pic is a few years old, (mostly grey hair now, and less of it and no beard! - see first pic for greater reality) but I really like it anyway. My friends have said that the second image with cat friend timelessly reveals my personality well, which is obviously too nice to ignore :-) edit - beard mysteriously returning!
I'm a total animal lover - especially cats, though I don't have one in Dublin.
I am an experienced traveller/host/home exchanger, and for over ten years have been having visitors in my apartment during the times when I am not there. I like meeting people, and love my job as an art college lecturer.
I am careful and selective about whom I have staying, as this is my home, and I try to keep it in immaculate order. I prefer personal contact and a trusting, friendly relationship with those who stay. I particularly welcome guests from the creative community ie fellow artists/designers/writers/dancers/photographers/actors.
I am also a committed environmentalist and vegetarian, so expect lots of recommendations for good food restaurants! I place great value on humour, creativity, stamina, trust, respect and being resourceful.
Every day I wait for news about my grant application for starting a course, to teach the River Liffey seagulls how to perform replicas of Busby Berkeley routines to entertain the tourists on the boardwalks.
