Also new - the carpet is entirely gone, and has been replaced with bamboo flooring and tiles in each bathroom (pics to come soon!).
If you have extra guests, there are 2 twin-sized mattresses from Ikea under the bed in the wherever it is most convenient. If you're really ambitious, I can probably dig up an air mattress for you as well. ;) With current beds, the place will comfortably sleep 6 (all on real mattresses!)
This is a great, safe neighborhood in Durham just off I-40 & Hwy 54 in the Woodcroft area of South Durham, convenient to UNC (10-15 min), Duke/Downtown Durham (10 min), RTP (10 min), RDU airport (15 min), and is very close to I-40. I'm an easy-going, quiet professional working & teaching in the area, and am particularly interested in the humanities and social sciences as well as art and design. My fiancee and I live about 15 minutes away, so we are both available to help if needed. During your visit, you'll have the place to yourself and we are always available by email, phone or text! Guests may or may not meet me - I occasionally drop by to check mail or for maintenance issues, but will let you know if I am coming by during your visit in order to respect your privacy.
* Master bedroom with queen-sized memory foam mattress with padding, private full bathroom with tub, and sliding door to back porch.
* Guest room with full size bed with pillowtop mattress and a 2" memory foam topper. Adjacent full bathroom with tub and private entrance directly from guest room (also a 2nd door leading to common living area).
* Two twin-sized real mattresses that can be set up on the floor anywhere in the townhome for extra guests. Extra air mattress can be made available if needed!
* Fully furnished (towels, linens, kitchen fully stocked for cooking)
* Refrigerator/freezer, full kitchen, stove/oven
* 2 French Presses, electric kettle, and coffee
* Two porches with sliding doors - one off the dining nook area, and one off the living room/master bedroom that overlooks greenways. Back porch is elevated to a height where mosquitoes are less of a problem during summer months, and privacy is optimum!
* Kitchen nook dining area (seats 2) + larger dining table (seats 6 comfortably)
* Open floor plan (*meaning that the dining, kitchen, and living rooms are all together in a large, open space. Your bedrooms and bathrooms are adjacent).
* Laundry (w/d)
* Television with Roku - feel free to link your accounts (Netflix, Hulu, etc) to the Roku if you're staying for an extended period! You can also connect a computer/laptop to the DVR cable to stream from your computer on the television. NOTE: There is no cable television. If you're staying for more than a month and would like to set this up with the cable company privately (for their fee), let me know and I'd be happy to help. There is a very poor antenna, so you might get one or two channels, but reception is spotty.
* 8+ miles of paved greenways that connect to the American Tobacco Trail (which runs all the way through downtown Durham and over to southpoint mall), great for walking, jogging, or biking. Includes fitness stations on the neighborhood greenway as well. Bring a bike or your running/walking shoes!
You will have access to the condo with keys. Be clean, respectful and have fun!
NOTE: At this time, I do not charge a cleaning fee, since I know this can be an unfortunate "hidden cost" on airbnb. HOWEVER, I do ask that guests clean the place at the end of their visit, and provide a detailed checklist for you to complete before checkout so that you can leave the place as you found it! If you'd prefer not to clean, I am happy to arrange a $75 cleaning fee with you.
About Durham and the surrounding area (Raleigh, Chapel Hill/Carrboro, Cary, Hillsborough): There are countless museums, bars, parks, restaurants, music and theater venues. There are miles of paved bike trails to explore just off the back porch - connecting to the American Tobacco Trail. Lots of great hiking and state parks in the area as well - just ask!
ALSO, just a note. I've lived in Durham for years, and can still get lost. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you bring a GPS or a map to help orient yourself!
PETS: I'm happy to discuss your pets, but make decisions on pets coming on a case by case basis. There is a $75 nonrefundable pet fee (per pet) if we arrange something.
You will have private access to the townhome during your stay (if I come by for maintenance or to pick anything up, I'll check with you first). You'll enjoy use of the back porch and greenways in the neighborhood.
For those who have an extended stay of over one month and would like access to the mailbox, just let me know and we can arrange something!
Interaction with Guests
I'm a pretty hands-off host, and like to respect your privacy and independence while on your trip! I have a fairly busy schedule and will either give you directions on how to let yourself in or meet you to let you in. Once you're settled in, you're on your own! I'm friendly and might or might not see you during your stay, but welcome communication from guests, and am always available by phone or text if a problem should arise.
Woodcroft is one of the most coveted and popular residential neighborhoods in South Durham, and is safe, quiet, wooded, and has miles of fabulous greenways just off the back porch with exercise stations in the central network. It is convenient (driving) to the entire Triangle area (Durham, Chapel Hill, and Raleigh), and the airport is only about 15-20 minutes away.
There is a TTA bus as well as a DATA bus that runs through the neighborhood, that can transport you anywhere in the Triangle. Keep in mind, though, that our bus systems are slow and are really not the preferable mode of transportation though it is common for folks to use the bus to get to the UNC campus or to take a bus from a park-and-ride to campus. I would HIGHLY recommend having a car in the area, as I am NOT walking distance to downtown. Durham is somewhat bike-able, if you're an avid biker. For casual bikers, it is fun to ride the greenway which will take you to the mall in one direction (probably 2 miles-ish) or Downtown in the other (about a 7-8 mile ride). You can walk or bike to several small restaurants/bars in the n'hood (all about 1-2 miles) - check out the guestbook for ideas!
However, if you want to take a bus, please refer to Durham Area Transit Authority (DATA), route 14, which runs down Woodcroft Pkwy (about 2 blocks from my place). The TTA (Triangle Transit Authority) also runs through the area as well.
While I enjoy hosting first time users of this site, I do request that all potential guests have a fully completed profile with pictures and ID verification, for security reasons! Please know that I will not approve your request if you have an incomplete or non-verified account!
Otherwise, please be respectful, quiet if it's late (the condo is in a quiet residential area), and please stay tidy! You break, you buy.
Also, because I do not charge a cleaning fee, I ask that guests clean up after themselves and leave the space in the condition you found it when you leave. I will provide you with a detailed checklist to clean up before you leave. This helps keep your costs down! :) However, if you'd prefer to not have to deal with cleaning, I charge a $75 cleaning fee which we can arrange at your request.
The place is just as described, even better. Plenty of space and sun from the skylights with a huge patio and trail just beyond the elevated balcony. Very inviting and comforting. If available, I would have stayed longer. I'll definitely rebook this place.
Great contact with host before we even left South Africa for Durham. Instructions provided were all accurate.
Excellent accommodations, better than pics. Easy location to shops etc. down the road. About 20 min to Duke University.
Great stay and no clean up fee
Loved the stay in the house. Its lovely, in a green and quite neighboorhood, but (when having a car) not far from a couple of restaurants and shopping facilities.
The house is spacious, the two bedrooms are comfortable, the living area very comfy. There is a terrace where you can enjoy sitting in the sun and relax.
Elissa dropped in once and it was nice meeting her. Everything went very smoothly and she tries to really make you feel comfortable during your visit.
Overall we had an excellent experience staying in Elissa's condo. Elissa was thorough in her instructions to get in and any additional information we needed to function in her place. We had some confusion about the wifi and she was very quick to respond to us. Her place is in a great location and fit our needs perfectly. The bed in the master bedroom is not very comfortable but for 5 nights it worked.
I'm so sorry the bed wasn't comfortable for you guys! Having had much feedback from many guests, I've heard that the memory foam is great as it doesn't sag over time! However, for guests wondering about this, there is 2" padding on the bed in the guest room (also a pillow-top mattress), so a softer bed is available if needed! So glad you had a nice stay overall, though! :)
Our experience with the condo rental was good. The description was accurate and Elissa gave explicate instructions of expectations for arrival and departure. She had mentioned that the door needed to be shut firmly to ensure it was closed and locked. Upon arrival we did notice the doorknob was loose and my husband found a screwdriver and tightened it and we had no problem after that. The kitchen was well stocked with dishes, etc., the only thing we missed was a toaster and a coffeepot. The location was perfect, lovely, and quiet. We did sweep the back deck and washed the table and chairs out there so that we could use them, and enjoyed the afternoon sun. It might be helpful to include some instructions with the TV because we did have some problem with that. (However, we did not email or call Elissa because it wasn't really that important to us). Also, just an FYI for Elissa - one of the dining room chairs is quite loose.
We would like to thank you for sharing your home with us. We were able to spend time with our son and his family, tour the area, and come back to the condo to relax.
Hi Margaret! Thanks for the feedback, and thank you for tightening the front door! For future reference, please feel free to call, email or text me if you have any questions at all about anything during your stay - or if there are problems with anything in the house, I'm happy to come fix them or to send my handyman by to fix them, as such things can come up! I wish I had known about these things! Also - was there a problem with the french coffee press? I find that it's the best way for guests to enjoy coffee while not having to worry about cleaning out a coffee maker upon leaving. Finally, your visit happened to be during the first weeks of spring, so my apologies that the deck wasn't ready for you! The North Carolina yellow pollen can be brutal, and cleaning it up can be an uphill battle for a few weeks every April!
Elissa sent a detailed description of check-in procedures and even shared her telephone number so that I could text her with questions. We had some questions about streaming on her TV, and she promptly responded.
When we asked to change dates, Elissa put a lot of time and energy into helping us make the change. She went above and beyond to make sure that it worked out for us.
Elissa's place in Durham was as pictured and as described. The location is great if you want convenient access to Durham, Chapel Hill and Raleigh. Elissa was clear in her communication, responsive and answered all our questions. Overall, a great stay.
About the Host, Elissa
Originally from Wilmington, NC (on the coast), I've enjoyed traveling while completing my very long schooling (from design and horticulture to social work!). Since completing a PhD in social work, I'm enjoying an easier life of practice and teaching. I mainly enjoy hiking, camping, community events, farmer's markets, and good, local food.
