Some very good practical information concerning how it is best and most economical to get from the airport and concerning the Blue Lagoon and more, further below in this text market as PPPP.
My fellows company is working in Tourism and Consultancy
In some cases my coworker or even me could take people on a:
a) Grand Golden Circle Tour - not only visiting the tourist sites! We have a nice jeep and license to take passengers. The cost for that would be around 350 dollars for a full day which is lower than our cost price for car and an employee. It would be divided then between 2-4 passengers (400 if 4 passengers). Also possible
b) Blue Lagoon and Reykjanes and
c) The south shore, waterfalls, nature and glacier walk.
d) The Westman Islands, one night minimum.
e) The circle around Iceland!, minimum for 4 days then (arr. 1200 km.)
You can get a free copy of the yellow very comprehensive VISITOR'S GUIDE book at the tourist information desk at the airport (often no employee there), or Reykjavik Excursion (also a discount coupon from them in the book) or Iceland Excursion.
The book has a lot of information and articles for example about the Northern Lights, the Icelandic horse, the Blue Lagoon, Golden Circle and more. Also good maps of Reykjavik and Iceland as well as discount Coupons valid at restaurants, whale watching, tours and more. The book is also at the site Visitors guide dot and is.
All necessities like towel, shampoo and more.
A dish washing machine, stove, oven, fridge, microwave ..
A 51 inch TV, DVD and a massage chair, good stereos. A good heating system in the flat.
Maybe a bike and some other things.
This home should make you feel better .... than at home:)
Speaks fluent English also good in all Scandinavian languages and German. Has traveled all over Iceland and to 47 foreign countries, most recently to south east Asia, have written travel stories about the trips.
NB: I work among else in tourism and have a lot of knowledge of what do to, where and at a good price. Often able to get car rental (mainly off season), some tours and more at better prices.
Coming from the airport
If you are coming with the fly-bus from the airport the (fare arr. ISK 2400 / return 3800) Iceland Excursion usually a bit cheaper than Reykjavik Excursion). It is best to take the Fly-bus to Grand Hotel which is like 3 minutes from my house (300 meters).
You could ask someone at the hotel for direction to my home if you don’t see it in the map in the Visitor’s Guide book, the home is towards east and the park.
Some Practical info:
Blue Lagoon is very popular with tourists and has become like a must to do. I do though recommend the thermal swimming pools comparatively more, not least as their entrance fee is like 10 times less and also a better way to meet the locals. The one closest to my home around 5 minutes walking, I sometimes try to take my guest one time to the thermal pools.
The best way for the Blue Lagoon especially for those who are not so long time in Iceland is with the company (website hidden) they usually have the best online prices or arr. 7000 ISK for transfer and entrance fee.
a) From the airport (coming) do; the airport – Blue Lagoon – Reykjavik first tour around 9 am.
b) From Reykjavik (leaving) to the airport that is leaving back home, via Blue Lagoon only though if your flight is in the afternoon (leaving the Blue Lagoon at 12.30 or 14.00 to the airport). This is also possible with the companies Reykjavik and Iceland excursion but their prices are a bit higher but they have more frequent departures.
Never buy water in Iceland in shops or restaurants, the water from the tab is great!
Access to everything for the guests.
Interaction with Guests
I always try to meet the guests when staying at my place or someone on my behalf.
Very central in the city, close to a green park Laugardalur. Easy to park here and considered a very good neighborhood among the locals:).
Easy for walking (city center around 15 min. & downtown 25 min. nice seaside walk). Also for local bus.
For tours and excursion at Grand hotel (where you can also buy them) arr. 200 meters away or Hilton 450 meters away.
Not many rules, just the basic / common sense ones. No smoking, except on the balcony:). Make the kitchen nice after use.
You can use everything from the kitchen that's there (spices, milk, sugar, orange juice ...... ), but just replace it with something else.
Guests are also expected to make the apartment - if they have the whole apartment clean when they leave, take of the sheets etc.
I have a very low a cleaning fee for the apartment, so just make it like semi clean when you leave. Otherwise pay a mild cleaning fee if you prefer :).
This house is very beautiful, we have a great time there.
We have all the facilities that was shown in the advert
the advert was very precise, house is a beautiful area and very quiet area of the town, very close to the city center.
This is a true Airbnb. The people at Airbnb market their service as a way to make money while you are absent from your house. I have been spoiled by staying in places that are more vacation rental than couch surfing and it affected my enjoyment on Day 1. Things improved and overall I enjoyed my stay.
Read the owner's description carefully: This is a single man who usually shares the apartment but will sometimes rent out the entire home. He asks that the place be left tidy upon checkout in case there is another booking. These are red flags that you need to consider. If you go in with the right attitude, you'll find that this property is good value (Reykjavik is EXPENSIVE!) and the location is just right (close to major bus connections and the thermal pool).
My family rented the entire home. There was some miscommunication about where to get the keys and we were left waiting several hours before access was granted. Based on the first red flag, I should have understood that the owner is still learning the tricks to a smooth check-in when renting the whole house. When we walked in, the cleanliness left something to be desired. Based on the second red flag, I should have understood that single men may not have the same standard of cleanliness as I, and that the owner was basically relying on past guests to clean his place. Many flights out of Reykjavik depart early morning; not everyone has the time to clean, especially the bathroom and the bedding.
In summary, make sure you communicate the day before you arrive and be prepared to clean a bit upon arrival. After that, enjoy this beautiful country called Iceland. You'll want to come back!
Christine was a good and accurate guest. This time I was away traveling and a friend of mine / coworker a man, was supposed to clean before the arrival of a new guests. I'm afraid that he didn't do that properly so i'm for the first time unfortunately getting a review about the apartment not so clean. I am afraid that he didn't therefore clean it according to housewife standard. I however often get the feedback that people consider my home a unusually clean and nice man apartment:). There was a little misunderstanding about the key where they should get it the morning they arrived sorry about that.
Everything was just as described. The house is very beautiful and comfortable. We had our own room and were able to also use the kitchen and living room. The bathroom was shared with our host who was only there part of the time. The kitchen has all the essentials to cook a meal and make hot beverages. The bathroom had a nice large bathtub. The neighborhood is an upscale residential neighborhood and seemed very safe. It is located in the city of Reykjavik and was close to shopping, sightseeing and major roads. Our bedroom was quiet and had dark shades which are necessary due to the long hours of summer sunlight. Our only two minor issues were that we were sent the address by airbnb but also received a different address on an email from our host due to his email automation settings. I printed the wrong one out and we had a little difficulty finding the right place to be. Just something to watch out for. And, our host had another guest for a the first few days we were there, so we were given the master bedroom for 3 days and then had to move all our stuff to the guest bedroom. Again, just a minor inconvenience. The beds were very comfortable, there is a big screen TV to watch, the host let us use his computer and wifi. I would recommend this host and house to anyone.
I stayed at Hakon's place with a couple of friends for a bit over a week. The appartment is big and comfortable and Hakon is a great host. It is located a little bit outside of the city centre (~20mins walking) but there is a bus stop nearby & Hakon often offered us a lift in his Jeep. There's also a good geothermal pool (Laugardalslaug) really close by.

About the Host, Konni
I'm in the forties, have a ten year old daughter, she lives in Kopavogur which is the next town 10 kilometers from here. I'm easy going, have traveled a lot to around 50 countries:). Also to all places (towns) in Iceland. I'm an Economist by education, and work among else in tourism & consultancy, publish among else a travel book.
So you would say I have quite a good background to give people advice concerning traveling in Iceland. Our company also works for many restaurants so I know them all in Reykjavik.
Like to have a nice home, with a mixture of new and old things. Have many friends a and good network as you could say.
Some things I couldn't bee without in Iceland is our great water from the tabs (free), the thermal swimming pools (4,5 $) and my lovely daughter.
I N F O R M A T I O N & PRACTICAL INFORMATION

GENERAL TOURIST INFORMATION SEE (website hidden) & (website hidden)
Sorry I don't have time to answer general tourist information .....
My company works in tourism, consultancy and publication
In some cases my coworker or even me could take people on a Grand Golden Circle Tour - not only visiting the tourist sites! We have a nice jeep and license to take passengers. The cost for that would be around 300-350 dollars for a full day which is lower than our cost price for car and an employee. It would be splitted then between 2-4 passengers.
i) If you are thinking of going to the Blue Lagoon it is best/ most economical to visit it when leaving the country i.e. take the fly bus back via Blue Lagoon, this is though only valid if you are leaving in the afternoon. Or when you are arriving if you arrive in the morning, i.e. go to Reykjavik via Blue Lagoon (if you are not to tired).
ii) No need to buy any tickets in advance for sightseeing etc, especially NOT in the autumn/ spring / winter - off season. As I am working in tourism we can sometimes get some tickets at lower price, especially for horse back riding, glacier walk and maybe whale watching, nb. you get a discount with our book in whale watching. Whale watching is almost downtown so don't buy it with pickup.
iii) I always recommend the thermal swimming pools for everyone to try, the price is only 4 Euros about 10 times less than the Blue Lagoon!. They are warm and nice and a very cultural thing for Icelanders.
iv) Don't buy water it is the same as the tab water, Bonus is the lowest price supermarkets and then Kronan, the price I guess 30% less than in the more tourist-supermarkets like 10-11 (see information on the first page in the Visitor´s Guide book).
v) Reykjavik Welcome Card is a good way to explore the city, with free entrance to swimming pools, the city buses, museums and more. The price for a 1,2 or 3 day card is low around (phone number hidden) ISK.
vi) The fly bus stops at a nearby GRAND HOTEL, which is 3 minutes walk from my home.
vii) Hitchhiking in Iceland is rather easy, easier though for women and those who have little luggage.
Here are some general recommendation for accommodation in the countryside.
Akureyri in the NORTH:
- Gula Villan - Charming old house in the center.
- Hrafninn Guesthouse, more modern in the same street.
- Hótel Örk, Hveragerði, (45 km from Reykjavik), often good offers in spring and autumn - good value for money.
- All over the countryside farmers holiday/ accommodation, they have a brochure with all the farms listed.
- Also good guesthouses and youth hostels.
TOURS AND ACTIVITIES:
Nb. Usually it is better to call the companies directly. When you book through so-called tourist agencies/ information the tour operator has to pay the agency like 15-30% commission! So better just to call the companies directly and get the pickup at the nearest hotel/guesthouse. Many have a discount coupon in our Visitor's Guide book.
Horseback riding (all have pickup at your accommodation):
- The Icelandic Horse, the only horse rental in Reykjavik, rather small but a good and personal service. Speak many languages and the area and surrounding is very beautiful. They have a very good reviews on trip Advisor.
- Eldhestar in Hveragerdi, Situated close to a small village 45 min from Reykjavik in the south. It is a good choice for those who want to go outside of the city and see some of the countryside. They have among else good trips where you can bath in natural hot springs and some other sightseeing activities.
At Sólheimajökull arr. 200 km from Reykjavik towards east, on the way to Jökulsárlón. Something many tourists like, through our company its like 30% cheaper.
