About this listing
My flat is a small but bright and comfortable place. It's clean and in good working order and does everything you need for a short or medium stay in London on your own or with your partner whether to see the sights or as a base for work. Come stay!
Cosy and well located one bedroom flat with everything you need for a short or longer stay in London.
The best thing about the flat is its location. 2 minute walk to Oval tube station which means you're about 15 minutes away from Soho, the Tower of London, the City (financial centre) and only 10 minutes from Victoria Station (which serves Gatwick airport) and Waterloo Station.
Great spot to explore London from.
The area has some nice bars, restaurants and all the shops you could need (a 24 hour corner shop with nearly everything you're likely to need is two doors down from the flat - very convenient).
The Flat is a comfortable size for two people and is freshly decorated. You'll have fresh clean towels when you arrive. It has a TV and DVD player if you fancy a quiet night in but is best used as a base to go and explore London by day and night. It is also Wifi enabled.
If I had be be critical, the only down side is the entrance area which you share with a small lawyers office and is a bit on the dark and dingy side. It's totally safe but it gets a lot of people coming and going during the day so isn't as fresh as I would like but that's just to get in. Once you're in, it's a lovely bright little place and I'm sure you'll enjoy your stay here.
If you have any questions about restaurants, bars in the area, either I or my friends who will be helping me manage the place will be delighted to help you out. If you stay I'll also share a very well kept secret (the phone number of the best little Indian restaurant in London - 10 minute walk away or they'll even deliver it to your door - it's a telephone number worth its weight in gold :)).
Looking forward to welcoming you to London.
The flat is all yours. You have to come through the slightly dingy common hallway but, once you're past the front door of the flat itself, it's your pad...nobody else get's in unless you want them to :)
Interaction with Guests
I am actually often overseas so the likelihood is that you'll be interacting with my friends Valentina and Andrew. They will be there when you arrive to show you around an answer any questions. Then they'll get out of your hair and leave you to enjoy London however you want to. Nobody will be around during your stay unless you want them to be (we are always available should there be a problem or if you have any questions).
The neighbourhood is my neighbourhood. I'm probably a bit biased but I really like it. It's a real cross section of London. There are film stars and members of parliament who live there but there is also a fair amount of social housing.
There are cool little pubs, some nice cafes and everything you need very close by to the flat but it's not one of the nerve centres of London. People won't often go out of their way to go to the area unless they live/work there or are visiting someone who does. So not so many tourists. It's 'real' London for me. Beautiful in parts, ugly in parts. If you want 'picture postcard' London, better to stay in Notting Hill or Chelsea or Westminster or Primrose Hill (the more swanky parts of town :)).
The tube is about 100m away which for London, is fantastic. It means that in a very short walk, you have access to the best way to get around London. There are also lots of bus routes but, to be honest, I rarely used them. The Tube gets you everywhere you want to go much faster (no traffic underground!).
Check In Rules:
1. Check in is flexible and subject to both parties agreeing when to meet up but the assumption should be that check in must not be before 9am or after 8pm.
2. In exceptional circumstances, I may be available to check you in at other times but it must be agreed in advance.
3. I have to reserve the right to say that check in will be after lunchtime if I am hosting a guest the day before and that they want to stay in the flat in the morning.
4. I have to reserve the right to say that check out time will be just before lunchtime if I am hosting a guest the night after your last night.
1. no smoking
2. no animals in the flat.
3. Please treat the place with the respect you'd like someone to treat your place with if it were yours. The cleaning fee covers my costs of having the sheets and towels cleaned and replaced and a quick run round with the vaccum cleaner. So, if you can try to leave the place in the state you found it in (dirty sheets and towels excluded of course), that would be great.
Otherwise do whatever you like and enjoy your stay!
Good..close to tube, kitchen well equipped.
15 min walk to Thames, and then on to great views of Westminister. Half an hour walk back from Westminister. Other good parks within walking distance.
Convenience stores and a Tesco Express close by.
.buzzer to apartment not labeled..through hosts instructions clearly state that the apt buzzer is labeled 'Walter'. This made checking in stressful as I stood in the street pressing buttons with no idea whether I was pressing the right one
wi fi code not clearly described....a few letters , then 'I think' . It should not be difficult to clearly state the wi fi code.
Apartment needs major spruce up.
Carpet in lounge is dirty, walls are scuffed, paint is peeling in bathroom. Bathroom has no towel rails or hook. Skirting board loose and lying on floor .
No kitchen lights for most of my stay as, despite texting host and his local rep twice, no action was taken. Bedside light and hall light gone when I arrived. Mattress old and soggy ..no good for anyone with a back problem
Windows dirty and one pane is cracked.
Floor is slanting so that table in lounge needs to be propped up to make it remotely level. Slanting floor means that fridge rocks when door is pulled open.
Insulation to apartment above is minimal so sound of footsteps and TV from above pervades apartment.
Entranceway is worse than 'dingy'...it is gross and depressing. Stains and rubbish on the ancient filthy carpet .
If none of the above worries you, you will find this a reasonably central small apartment to stay in while you are in London.
I've stayed in 20 plus Air BnB (website hidden) 20 plus cities .This is the only one which I have found to be way below what one would expect in a rental property.
This review is shocking.
I have to admit to having been unable (for a number of reasons) to help with fixing the lights in the kitchen during Christine's stay (Both I and my friend who usually helps out were out of town and I couldn't find anyone free to help). I am so sorry Christine for this inconvenience.
However, for this to motivate you to be so nasty about my flat is really unfair. I recently repainted more than half the flat and had the carpets steam cleaned. the bed is soft (as I like them) but certainly not old. The floor slopes because it's a 19th century building...and it's hardly noticeable (I lived there for years without it bothering me), the flat is on a main road and there is a bit of noise but (i) I say so in the description; and (ii) it's really not that bad unless one is used to countryside silence.
I fear that, because I was unable to help Christine with the lights in the kitchen, she felt I deserved to be punished. I hope that all the positive reviews left in lots of different languages over the recent months will persuade you that this flat, although small and with a dingy entrance, is a nice place to stay in London.
The apartment was as expected and close to the tube so was easy to get around. Just what we needed for our week stay in London.
Alex was out of town but his friend Philppa was very nice and gave us all the information we needed
Alex's flat was just perfect for our needs. it was definitely light and breezy which was great as we hit London during one of it's rare heat waves. After traveling for 3 weeks and staying in hotels it was great to have the room to spread out. The flat is very close to the Oval tube station and there are also buses that go to Brixton and Castle & Elephant from across the road as well as to Paddington from around the corner of the tube station (towards the Cricket ground). There are also 3 eating/drinking options in the straight line from the tube to the flat itself as well as a few other eating options. We counted 3 convenience stores in that same vicinity as well as a pharmacy and two ATMs. All in all it is a very convenient place to stay.
The flat itself is very cute and clean and just like the pictures showns. There is a full working kitchen with dishwasher and washing machine, the bathroom has a bathtub and plenty of hot water, the bedroom features a very comfortable bed and the living area has all you need to watch TV after a long day out sightseeing. The free WIFI was also very welcome.
We were met at the flat by Philippa who showed us around and then left us to our own devices. She was very welcoming and assured us that if we needed anything at all that we could ring her.
The entrance to the flat is a bit dingy I have to admit however that is not an issue as you are not living in the hallway and once you open the door to the flat all that is forgotten.
The only thing I would mention is that if one has any mobility issues it may be a bit hard to get luggage up and down the stairs - not that there are many of these however it could be a problem for someone perhaps.
All in all I would recommend staying in Alex's flat and would definitely come back next time I am in London.
Had a great experience with the flat. Would recommend it to other guest as well. :)
Excellent apartment, clean and in the perfect location so close the the tube station and public transport. We would definitely love to stay again when visting London.
About the Host, Alex
My name's Alex. Half of me is Hungarian, the other half from Yorkshire but I was born and raised in Belgium. What that makes me is anybody's guess. I am married to a Belgian who treats me far too well and have three adorable children; Maya (2 years old), Misha (1 year old) and Zoltan (10 days old).
Although I used to be a Londoner, I am now based mainly out of Brussels. The things I miss most about London...good Indian food (the best in town just five minutes from my flat in Oval), bacon sandwiches and my UK friends (not necessarily in that order). Family are in Brussels so when I was in London, they were what I missed most about Belgium.
That's me in a very small nutshell.
